DEREK’S P.O.V.

Something was wrong. I could feel it in my bones, and my fingers tapped impatiently on my desk as I stared at the three messages I had sent Charlotte.

Delivered.

All of them said 'delivered,' but none had been read or responded to.

Charlotte had ignored every single one, and what was worse was that she hadn’t returned any emails or calls from my staff about the redesign of The Black Door either.

From what I had learned about her, it was very out of character. She had been

  • The Accidental Almost Kiss with my Ex's Uncle   Fifty-Three

CHARLOTTE’S P.O.V.Tara watched us eat for a long moment, her fingernails clicking against the top of the wood before she gave up waiting for our undivided attention and released an irritated sigh. I narrowed my eyes at her as she reached into her bag. Paul had already searched it, but there was still a part of me that wondered what her game was. She certainly wasn’t here to become best friends. The envelope had barely hit the table before Paul snatched it from her. He was very cautious as he went through the pages there before tapping the side of the envelope onto the table. “I’m not going to poison her.” Tara snapped, rolling her eyes. “I’m pregnant. Don’t be stupid. I wouldn’t risk being near anything like that.” I ignored her, watching Paul closely, seeing him go through each paper and even inspecting a physical flash drive as if he were expecting it to be a secret pocket knife, before spreading the content out across the table between us for me to see.“What’s all of this?”

CHARLOTTE’S P.O.V. The knock on the apartment door came just as I finished cooking dinner. I glanced at the clock, seeing it was almost seven, and glanced at Paul with a shrug. I had no idea who would show up this late, especially without texting or calling first. Lydia wouldn’t have come over without checking in to make sure I was home now that her key didn’t work, and my father would be at the hospital with my mother right now, so there was no one else who would be here except… My heart sped up as I filled with excitement. It had only been two days, but it had felt like forever. Derek and I had been texting back and forth over the past two days, but it was all casual and friendly. How was your day? Did you drink enough water? How are you feeling? I even told him when I tripped on my lunch break and accidentally threw my food at a passing bicyclist who just happened to be riding by at the wrong time. Even the crying, laughing emoji he sent in response, before asking if I was

JUSTIN’S P.O.V. I leaned back in my leather chair as I took in Richard’s office. Dark mahogany, leather chairs, and a bottle of whiskey on the corner of his desk. It was neat, clean, and cold. The second I walked in, I knew he was the right kind of man for the job. He had been our family lawyer for years, but I had never had to deal with him myself, not yet at least. I wasn’t worried though. They hadn’t kept me for long. All it had taken was a couple of phone calls, and my father had me out within a few hours of my bail being set. Even if he hadn’t, I knew they couldn’t keep me there long, just like how they wouldn’t convict me. I was a Moretti. That name meant something. People knew that we had power and influence, and they wouldn’t dare mess with us without facing consequences. Richard sat behind his desk, flipping through the file, his face blank. The more he reviewed, the wider my smile became. He was putting on a good show to charge us for more time, but we all kn

CHARLOTTE’S P.O.V. Getting into the car with a smirking Paul at two in the morning was torture. Derek and I had spent hours at the pond talking, but by the look on my bodyguard’s face, he clearly thought something else had happened. The worst part is that I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face long enough to deny it. I had never had a night like this with someone before. The dinner had been amazing, the pond had been beautiful, and the conversation had been easy and just kept going. And now I was grinning like a fool as Derek closed the card door once I was in, after wishing me a good night. I couldn’t stop replaying the night in my head as I stared out the passenger window at the city lights blurring past. Each time I went over it, I could practically hear his laughter and found myself blushing. God. I was in trouble. “So, did you have a good dinner?” Paul asked, making me nearly jump out of my skin as he forced me from my thoughts. My head whipped around to find Pau

DEREK’S P.O.V.Dessert had been a mistake. Not because it wasn’t good. It had been absolutely delicious. It was because Charlotte had practically moaned her way through half of her tiramisu before realizing she was doing it and turning an adorable shade of red. By the time we were done, I felt like the room was overheating and I couldn’t think straight. The news about her hearing being scheduled had caused something to shift for us, and each time our eyes met, she looked away quickly as if she were uncomfortable, more than the almost kiss had. “Would you like to get some air?” I asked suddenly, and Charlotte lifted one eyebrow in the familiar way that told me something cheeky was about to come from her. “Is this your way of kicking me out?” She asked, and I chuckled, shaking my head.“Never,” I said, moving to stand. “If I wanted you gone, Paul would be out front with the car running.” That familiar smile I had enjoyed far too much spread across her face. “Wow, you really know h

CHARLOTTE’S P.O.V.The silence that followed us into the dining room was heavy. I was painfully aware of everything I did, trying to avoid ruining this evening any more than I already had. Yet, the scraping of my chair against the floor and the clinking of my silverware made me wince. Derek remained standing, pouring us both a glass of wine before placing the bottle down and taking a seat. Each time we met each other’s eyes, we glanced away quickly. Neither of us mentioned what had just happened in the kitchen or how close he had come to ringing a bell that couldn’t be un-rung. Instead, we served ourselves from the dishes between us, while I tried like hell not to drop every bite down my front from my nerves. The room itself was surprisingly casual, but I knew from my last time here that he had another, larger, formal dining area for guests. This one was smaller and simpler. The round table was beside a wall of windows overlooking the back yard, and it felt… normal. My eyes cl

CHARLOTTE’S P.O.V. For a moment, all I could do was stare at her. She couldn’t be serious. “I’m sorry, what?” I asked as a choking sound left my body as if my brain couldn’t figure out if I wanted to laugh or start sobbing. I was covered in bruises. They had just scraped Justin's blood and sk

CHARLOTTE’S P.O.V.It took me a moment to get my body to do what I wanted, but the knocking on the door stayed calm, and I could hear them calling out from the other side that they were with the police department. Still, I looked through the peephole to see their uniforms before I knocked the chai

CHARLOTTE’S P.O.V. I was giddy with excitement as I felt the packet of photos in my purse. It was a long shot, but I was ecstatic that they approved me taking pictures today, as long as no members were in the shot and the pictures were taken on a phone without internet access. I had just pulled

DEREK’S P.O.V. The silence that followed was almost suffocating, or it would have been if I were in Justin’s shoes. He looked like his air supply had been cut off, and he was ready to explode. At least forty people sat in the dining room, frozen, all leaning or looking over as they waited to hea
