Alpha Charlton hasn’t changed that much since the last time I saw him—at the funeral.

He does have bags under his eyes that were not there before, back when he had no reason to lie awake at night and stare at the ceiling, asking why.

Back when we were all happy and full of light and hope.

I can tell when he shakes my hand he does so with reservations, and I can’t blame him. He still has unanswered questions, as do I. But from his perspective, someone who wasn’t there when everything happened, he is not only relying on what he knows of me but the rumors and whispers that began coming out of the castle right after the incident, whispers that continue to come from the castle still.

I’ve never blamed him for not fully trusting my side of the story. I still have moments when I don’t trust it myself after all.

Now, as he welcomes me back into his home, I am reminded of the feeling of excitement I had the last time I stood in the ballroom, waiting.

Waiting for her.

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Mind Scramble

SorenWater dribbles down heavy mildew stained stone as I blink into the glare of flickering fluorescent lights. Patton pants beside me, grunting in pain as my mind catches up to my body. My wrists are bound with iron shackles and strung up over my head with a chain connected to the ceiling. My back is to the wall, however, and I’m… seated, my legs stretched out in front of me, my thigh brushing Patton’s. I close my eyes against a searing pain along the left side of my head. I taste blood when I lick my lips and realize I must have been struck on the side of the face with something heavy and blunt. “Pat? You good?”“I dunno,” he murmurs. “I can’t feel my legs.”I open my eyes, straining my neck to look at him and notice the blood seeping through his thick, goose down jacket now flayed open down the center. He got stabbed. That’s obvious, but I think we’ve been out for a while judging by the total numbness in my arms, so the fact he’s awake and talking is a good sign. A rattling ec

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   She Won't Be Stopped

MaeveI can’t breathe through the pain anymore. It grips me, tearing through my back, splitting my spine. I grip Misty’s arms as I howl, tears streaming down my face. Misty’s trembling, holding me upright, her healing powers hard at work mending the bruises and scratches I’ve left on her skin. It’s been four hours of this. Six hours ago, Soren, Blake, and Patton left. Soren told me he'd be back within an hour. Maybe two, at the most. I’ve been counting the seconds.“Maeve, you should try to lie down,” Misty says gently, coaxing me toward the bed, but I furiously shake my head and writhe through another contraction that begins to build at the base of my spine. “No, no, no, no,” I mumble then gasp as the pain curls around me in an iron embrace. “Ginny, how much longer?” Grandma Ella says sternly from my other side as I stand between the two women, my legs shaking, but I’m unable to find the strength to move. I feel Ginny’s hand glide between my legs. The pain is unbearable. I lea

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Taking Down the Viper

SorenTwin Rivers is cast in darkness and flickering neon lights as I trudge beside Blake, our heads bent against a spray of slush. The streets are clear of ice but soaking wet, and my boots leave deep imprints in the rotten snow as I cross a street, Blake staying in step with me. My eyes are covered by my usual mask–a simple strip of dark fabric. My ball cap casts the rest of my face in shadow as we cut through an alley between two lively bars. We have to side-step between the crowd to gain access to the next street. Blake begins to don his gloves, but I stop him, shaking my head. “She needs to see you as you are. That’s part of the plan, remember?”He grits his teeth and slides the gloves back in his pocket. “Having second thoughts?”“No,” he rasps. It’s impossible to tell what he’s really thinking. His face is set in a mask of indifference as the city bleeds around us. Twin Rivers is a hotbed for nightlife. Bars and clubs rage even in the darkest hours of morning. A group of youn

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Exits and Entrances

MaeveMisty lingers nearby as Ginny, my midwife, rises from between my legs, her face cast in the shadow of the sunset sending golden and crimson streaks of light through the curtains. The snow is melting. Ice thaws on the windows. I relax my legs with a grimace, Misty coming to my side to help me back into a seated position. “So?” Misty asks as Ginny disposes of her gloves. “Is this happening?”“Slowly, but yes. She’s quickening now. Her contractions will grow stronger from her, but they’re still far enough apart that I believe we have some time. A day or so.”“A day?” I whine. Ginny and Misty give me mirrored looks of sympathy, but it’s obvious there’s nothing more that can be done. “Well, that means you have a full day to finally decide what her name is going to be,” Misty quips, shrugging a shoulder. “I’m leaning toward Misty, but I’m sure your Mom and Sarah would beg to differ.”I playfully narrow my eyes. “If she ever makes her arrival, I’ll give her a name. Until then, I’m g

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   The Mate Bond Snaps

MaeveI expected this to feel awkward. So much time has passed. We had each other for a single night, and then months went by. Should I have forgotten what his hands feel like? Should my body be tense and unyielding when he climbs next to me, carefully bracing himself with a hand to the mattress as he leans over to kiss my lips, my jaw, and down the slope of my neck while his free hand glides over my hip to my thigh? Instead, I melt into his touch. I drown in him. Every ache and pain fades and is instantly replaced by a dizzying sense of belonging and being beloved. It’s natural. It’s like touching and being touched by him is something I was built for, like he was made for me and I him. Yet, I’m not as agile as I was once. Moving around–being thrown this way and that way is obviously off the table, but Soren… knows what to do. “Oh!” I cry out, gripping the sheets when his mouth dips between my thighs, his arms snaking around my legs and pulling me down the mattress. My eyes flutter

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Marching Orders

MaeveGray morning sunlight spreads across the carpet as I pace the corridor outside of the library where a screaming match is taking place between Blake and Ryatt. Soren and my dad’s voices occasionally lift over the snarls and growls but otherwise blend with the chaos. They came back last night, and it’s been a mess, to say the least. I came out of Blake’s private suite to the sound of my mother’s frantic voice echoing through the halls where we collided in an embrace, and the first thing I asked was if Soren was still alive. And, he is. Thank the Goddess, and it sounds like he’s holding his own. I should be in the room. I know that, but this pain… I can’t work past it anymore. My entire body is in turmoil as the contractions I’ve been having off and on over the past two days grow closer and closer together but then slip away entirely, leaving me breathless and frustrated. Now, I’m stressed out, and all I want is a moment alone with Soren to make sure he’s okay and no one in my
