Chapter 7: an impossible remedy

REGINA’s POV

“Wake up, wake up, wake up.”

A voice keeps on chanting drifting into my sleep.

I groan wanting the noise to go away as I roll on to the other side.

“Come on, my child, you can’t sleep the whole day. There are things to do.”

My eyebrows furrowed as those words resounded in my head.

Things to do?

Wait, who owns that voice?

And ....

I snuggled deeper on the pillow.

Why is it so soft?

And why hasn’t he come to wake me up yet?

And with that, I suddenly became aware of my surroundings as I opened my eyes, nothing coming to my head as I tried to think of where I could.

“My child ?.”

I swiftly turned sideways to see an elderly woman standing surprisingly upright next to the side of the bed I was in.

“Hii ?.” I replied confused managing to raise my hand up to wave a little.

I take a look around the large room recalling why I was here in the first place.

“Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten ..”

“No I haven’t.” I clenched my jaw out of annoyance. “Who forgets the day that their fated mate rejects them?.” I seethed out angrily as the events of yester evening streamed in my thoughts.

Asshole of a king!

How can you not know your own mate for goddess’s sake?

“Oh child, I know what you are thinking and you shouldn’t think that far.” The old woman says interrupting my thoughts.

“I believe I have the right to think.” I clap back at her throwing the blanket aside and getting out of the bed.

“My child, you—.”

“I’m not your child.” I angrily say to her.

She pauses before coming closer to sit on the bed, still on the other side of the room. She taps the large mattress as if instructing me to come sit with her.

I roll my eyes. “Why should I listen to you? I don’t even know who you are.”

“You were a lot nicer yesterday.” She says wistfully.

I frown crossing my arms, deeply annoyed that she keeps on bringing up the past.

A past that involved the most hated person in my heart right now.

No, not my sleazy step father who ran off.

My supposed mate, Mattel.

“My name is Maria.” The elderly woman says softly. “And my sub gender is a beta.” She reveals to me.

The lack of scent made it obvious to me but she telling me herself made me pull down my tall walls for a while.

“Omega but I’m sure you already knew that.” I say bitterly.

Maria didn’t respond for a while and I assumed she was feeling sorry for me.

But I didn’t need that.

I’ve already felt sorry for myself for more than 19 years of my life.

I turn around to look at the large windows.

“Since your king says I’m not his mate, can’t I leave?.” I asked her curiously, even though the thought of me leaving without being claimed by him hurt me so much.

“Your father owes the king’s father a debt, that’s why he keeps on bringing—.”

“Then I’ll pay the debt.” I say replying to her. “And do not call him my father.” I add as an afterthought.

“You are already paying for the debt by working here, my child, that is the only way.”

“But if I were to work elsewhere?.”

“The king can not let you go unless the man who dropped you off here comes back for you.”

I bit the inside of my lips angrily.

Damn my dead mother for getting intertwined and married to that bastard of a werewolf.

He’s causing me twice the pain he ever has and that is a lot.

“So I .. ?.” I don’t finish the statement for fear of knowing my future.

“You are here until he comes down or the debt is paid.”

“And if he is not?.” I face her. “What happens next? I work here everyday of my remaining life with him being around?.” I asked tearfully. “With the known fact that I will never be his? And I know for a fact that I will not be the last girl to be brought to him to test if I’m his mate... other girls will come too, girls after girls. Would I watch that too? Will I watch him walk past me in hallways years after years after years with him not acknowledging my presence because I’m a maid and he is a royal whose stupid brain doesn’t realize that his mate has been standing next to him for an entire lifetime right in his castle. If so, then that is like handing a death sentence to me.”

“My child—...”

“Regina!.” I interrupt her immediately correcting her words. “My name is Regina.”

“Regina, little omega, it is not the King’s fault that his alpha doesn’t recognize you to be his fault.”

“Even if his alpha doesn’t recognize my omega, why can’t he recognize me?!!.” I ask desperately. “If our wolves can’t then why can’t we? What happened to instincts, what happen to the touch? What happened to—“

“The king doesn’t have any of that.” Regina interferes with my words. “He is one of a kind.”

“What does that mean? I know he’s cursed but ... .”

My voice completely gone pliant due to the confusion surrounding what she just revealed.

“His senses are turned off.” She drops it at once like it’s a bombshell.

And it truly is a surprise.

Because I have never met a soul whose senses are off.

“What do you mean by his senses are turned off?.” I ask with all eagerness to know drifting closely to her unconsciously.

“His alpha is just alpha.” Maria continues. “It’s something never heard of before, an odd trait for a werewolf to have, let alone a member of the royal family but Mattel was born with it. Having your alpha be just alpha without its senses is just on the opposite side of empathy, there is callousness, heartlessness, or cold-heartedness.“

I nod suddenly understanding his attitude. “Is that why he’s like that?.”

“Unfortunately yes.” Maria sighed. “But despite all all that, Mattel is quite compassionate himself but when his alpha takes over, that’s when the problem begins.”

“I used to think that his only curse was him knowing his death day, that was what was said to us as stories when I was a little kid.”

For the first time, Maria smiles shaking her head. “That is just yet another unfortunate incident that Mattel was born with. So do not blame the king if he doesn’t know that you are the one who’s to release him from his demons.”

“His demons?.”

She talking and talking only made me more confused.

What was it behind Alpha Mattel. The king was more complex that I thought he would be.

“The priestess did say that Mattel would be free from all the shackles of his curses if only he had sexual intercourse with his mate.”

A slight blush appeared on my face thinking of that because annoyance came swooping it away. “Wait what? What kind of remedy is that?.”

Maria shrugged. “No one knows.”

“So the king would have to sleep with me to believe that I am his mate?.”

The equation was very silly yet I wanted an answer.

“How  is me having sex with him going to work out when he doesn’t even want to be in my presence, considering the events of yesterday, I’m sure he loathes me by now.” I complain to her.

“He doesn’t need to like you for you to be in his bed.”

“Who sleeps with a person they don’t ... .” I drift off realizing what she meant by that. “Has he?.”

Maria nods. “Yes he has. More than Dozens of girls are being brought each month and Mattel tries his luck with every one of them and each time, he gets disappointed.” She adds a small sad chuckle. “I’m sure he won’t continue for long, seeing as he’s closer to his 30th birthday.”

My heart plummeted down at the thought of that.

“I want to help my mate.” I say willingly. “But he needs to recognize me as his first.”

Maria brings her hands together as some form of pleading. “Regina, my child. You are my only hope, you are the only one who has come here that has been very insistent on him being your mate, I just need you to—.”

“I am not sleeping with the king like a random slut. I will be in his bedroom if he calls to me to it. Sincerely”. I make a final decision despite knowing it might end badly for my alpha. “Until then, the king can keep on sleeping with the others till his death day.”
