Kieran's POV

She's asleep before I've finished locking the door behind us.

Not the restless, fever-thick sleep of last night — this is something cleaner, the kind that comes after a body has burned through everything it had and finally been allowed to stop. She's out before her head fully settles against the pillow, one hand curled loosely at her side, and I stand at the foot of the bed for a moment just watching her breathe, because the alternative is thinking about the man I saw at the end

Kieran's POV She's asleep before I've finished locking the door behind us. Not the restless, fever-thick sleep of last night — this is something cleaner, the kind that comes after a body has burned through everything it had and finally been allowed to stop. She's out before her head fully settles against the pillow, one hand curled loosely at her side, and I stand at the foot of the bed for a moment just watching her breathe, because the alternative is thinking about the man I saw at the end of the market lane. I only caught him for a second. Hood up, half-hidden behind a canvas stall, watching us walk back through the crowd. The crest at his collar catching the early light before he turned away. A crane in flight. Wings spread. Silver thread. He wasn't following us. He was already there — already positioned, already watching — which means he didn't follow Juni from the building. He knew where she was going to be before she got there. I turn that over in my head while I pull th

  • The Alpha’s Forbidden Omega   The Price of Asking

Juni's POV I last exactly forty-three minutes before I break. I count them deliberately, the way my father taught me to count breaths when the fear got too big to hold. One minute bleeding into the next, each one a small war between what my body is screaming and what the last ten years of my life have taught me about asking Alphas for anything at all. By forty-three, I'm out of fight. "Kieran." He looks up from the chair instantly — like he hasn't actually been reading the letter in his hands at all, like he's been watching me from the corner of his eye this entire time, waiting for exactly this. "Tell me what you need," he says, and the careful steadiness in his voice does something to my chest I don't have room to examine right now. "I need you to come closer." The words scrape out of me rough and humiliating and necessary. "Not to — I'm not asking you to do anything. I just need—" "Okay," he says. Just that. No triumph in it. No satisfaction at being asked after holding

  • The Alpha’s Forbidden Omega   Behind the Locked Door

Juni’s POV "You're still here," I say, and it comes out somewhere between a question and an accusation. "I said I would be." Kieran hasn't moved from the chair against the far wall, not once, from what I can tell — though time keeps sliding strangely, minutes stretching and collapsing without warning every time the fever crests and pulls back. "How are you feeling?" "Like I'm on fire." My voice scrapes rough on the way out. "Like every answer I could give you is a lie except that one." "That's an honest answer." "I'm too tired to be anything else right now." I push myself up against the headboard, and the room tilts hard enough that I have to grip the blanket to steady it. Kieran's out of the chair before I've fully registered moving, one step closer, then stopping himself, hands dropping back to his sides like he's caught himself doing something he promised not to. "You don't have to sit up." "I don't like lying flat in front of someone I don't know." It's the truest thing I'v

  • The Alpha’s Forbidden Omega   What the Wolf Won't Report

Kieran’s POV She goes still in my arms the second I lift her, all the fight going out of her body at once, and something in my chest tightens so hard it's almost pain. "Easy," I say again, more to myself than to her now. "I've got you." She doesn't answer. Can't, from the look of her — skin flushed too hot even through her cloak, breath coming shallow and fast, whatever strength got her this far into a dead-end courtyard clearly spent. I ease her up against my shoulder, careful, and turn back toward the gap between the buildings just as Wren's voice cuts down the alley behind me. "Kieran." He's breathing hard, like he's run the last several streets trying to catch up. His eyes go straight to her, then to me, and I watch the color drain out of his face. "It's her. From the avenue." "It's her." "I told you not to say anything more, and you didn't, and I've spent the last hour telling myself I imagined what I felt sitting on that horse next to you." He drags a hand down his face.

  • The Alpha’s Forbidden Omega   What the Goddess marks

Juni’s POV"Two more streets," a man's voice calls out, flat and bored. "Check every doorway. Council wants the whole district cleared before nightfall."I don't remember deciding to run. I just remember running. The crowd swallows me for the first few strides, bodies shoving past in every direction, someone's elbow catching my ribs hard enough to steal what little air I have left. I duck through a gap between two stalls, past a startled fishmonger who shouts something after me I don't catch, into the mouth of a side street where the noise of the avenue drops away behind me like a wave pulling back out to sea.My legs don't feel like mine anymore. The fire that started in my stomach has climbed all the way up through my chest, pooling hot and heavy behind my ribs, and every few steps my vision swims so badly I have to catch myself against a wall just to keep moving forward."Keep moving. Find somewhere closed. Somewhere with a door that locks."The side street opens into a narrow lane

  • The Alpha’s Forbidden Omega   The Scent on the Wind

Kieran’s POV"You're riding too far forward again," Wren mutters beside me, that only I catch it over the crowd. "Council delegates are watching the formation. It doesn't look right, you leading the column like you're racing somewhere.""I'm not racing anywhere.""Could've fooled me an hour ago."I don't answer that. He's not wrong, and there's no version of this conversation where admitting it helps either of us."Alder's already asking after you," Wren adds, and I feel my jaw tighten before he even finishes the sentence. "Wanted to know if you'd be at the feast hall early enough to greet Seraphine properly before the formal presentation.""I know when the feast starts, Wren.""I'm not asking if you know. I'm telling you he's asking." He shifts in his saddle, glancing sideways at me. "Whole council's been talking about it for a week. You show up late, or worse, you show up and don't look like you want to be there, and it's not just Alder who notices. It's every Alpha in that hall dec
