Aeliana's POV

I returned to Caelan's recovery room after leaving Marcus at Vera's cell. The door clicked shut behind me, and suddenly we were alone for the first time in days.

Really alone.

Caelan was awake and sitting up in bed, shirtless because of the bandages wrapped around his ribs. The setting sun painted his skin gold, highlighting the scars and bruises that mapped out everything he'd survived. Though he looked much better than he had this morning. The color had returned to his face, and his eyes were clear and focused.

"Come here," he said

"How did it go?" he asked as I stood there.
