“Damien, what is happening?” I grabbed him, “Where are we?” “Katla, calm down, this is an elevator. It will take us to our home in the city. It’s on the 105th floor. Well, 105th through 107th to be exact. You’ll see. I hope you like it.” My wolf awoke somewhere in the corner of my mind to appreciate the way he said “our home” with ease. I tried to regain control of my breaths, and he held me close. His smell enveloped me, and soon, there was nothing else except him and me wrapped protectively in his arms. I rested my head against his chest, instantly relaxing. The elevator came to a stop with a small lurch that made my stomach slide up and down, then the doors slid open to reveal a massive space surrounded by windows that touched the sky itself. I took a step out of the elevator and the doors closed shut behind us. I looked around, expecting to see the familiar buzz of a packhouse, and he sensed it, “It’s just us Katla,” he breathed. “My parents are in their suite, as are everyone else. This space is ours now.” “Ours. There that word was again,” I thought contentedly. I walked across the plush rugs, down several steps, into a large circular room with a fireplace and white sofas. For being alone here, there was enough space for the entirety of Iceclaw. I walked to the row of windows to look out at the inky sky dotted with stars. I placed my hands on the cool window and stretched out before me was the entire, glittering world, with darkness on the horizon. I could just make out the shimmer of the Southern barrier, far in the distance. I gasped at the beauty of everything below. Damien came next to me and wrapped an arm around my waist. “Do you like it?” “Damien, it’s…I don’t know how to even begin to process this…” I breathed. He nuzzled into my neck, kissing under my ear. “And do you like this?” he purred, nipping my earlobe and pulling me close. “Mmmhmm…” I leaned into his kisses and nips. He swept me up in his arms like a baby and carried me up a sweeping, modern staircase to the second floor. He stopped in front of a door, and hissed, “Shit.” “Damien, is that you,” a female’s voice called from the room. I looked up at Damien and panic flashed across his face. He put me down, and kept an arm wrapped around my waist, like I would try to run if he let go, then swept his hair back with his hand. He was clearly flustered. “Damien?” I asked, “Who is that?” “Eh, that’s Clarissa, my…uh….other assistant,” he said. “And I suppose your assistants…assist you in any way you see fit?” I mused, looking down his body to the lump beneath his sweats. He looked down at me and I could tell he was carefully considering his words, “My assistants are there to…um…serve my needs… yes. Whatever those … needs… may be. I hadn’t anticipated–” “Me,” I finished for him. “You hadn’t anticipated my tagging along after our engagement. So, you wanted to come back to this giant glass tower and fuck your assistant?” “Well, yes, I hadn’t expected a lot of things today. It’s been very… eventful?” He ran his hand through his hair again. He did that when he was thinking or nervous. I bit the corner of my lip, thinking about my response. “Eventful is certainly one word you could use to describe today. Though, I think I would go with unexpected. Goddess, this day has been something.” I looked up at him, eyes burning. I couldn’t blame him for arranging something after he returned from Iceclaw. It was an arranged alliance marriage after all, and this was the absolute last place I would have expected to be when I woke up this this morning. I should be at a banquet, celebrating my ascension to Alpha-in-Waiting. I touched the diamond at my throat, noting it seemed to sparkle less here, and I started to slide the jacket off my shoulders, letting it fall to the floor. “Damien, are you coming or what?” Clarissa called from around the corner, clearly unaware that I was there. “Clarissa, I think-” Damien began to speak. “No, Damien, wait,” I stopped him from sending her away. I continued to undress, letting my pink pants slip down my long pale legs. I heard Damien’s breath catch. “Katla, what are you–” “Shh,” I said, “Watch.” I felt powerful. I was unclaimed and unmarked, but something deep in me took over, claiming my sexuality. As I stood there in my white tanktop and white panties looking up at Damien, my lips parted and I ordered, “Well, get on with it then. I’m going to watch.”Damien “Rolf, Clarissa, look for Peter,” I called as I sprinted up the stairs. When I ran into the room, I found Katla, but with her eyes that burned an even brighter blue from crying and tear streaked cheeks, she took my breath away. “I wouldn’t tell her that right now,” Sargon suggested. “No shit,” I told him back. “Katla, I’m so sorry. I know you’re mad, but I promise I didn’t know until I saw the Night Flame come alive as it touched your skin. Please, believe me. I still don’t understand, but I want us to figure this out together. Ok?” “The Night Flame?” She asked. “The purple diamond, it’s special and it can only be controlled by the prophesied princess, the direct descendant of the Moon Goddess herself at the time of Her choosing. I think that might be you, Katla,” I walked across the room, sat on the floor next to her, and held her. “Damien. Something happened. I can’t find it,” she cried. “That’s why I screamed.” “C
Damien “Explain,” both Sargon and I growled at the same time, still glaring at Clarissa, who was more pale than usual. “I was upset,” Katla explained, “And Clarissa saw me sitting over there, crying. It’s just, the weight of everything…” and she started to trail off. “When she was upset, I suggested we go for a walk to help her clear her mind and get some air,” Clarissa picked up for her. “So we walked, and I saw a little wolf with a human—“ Katla was clearly amused by this. “A dog,” Clarissa finished. “We walked to the Roaming Bean. I thought it would be good for her to see other Wolf People, so she wouldn’t feel alone. Only, I didn’t know—“ Katla picked up, “She didn’t know what happened yesterday.” “And you told her while you were there?” I asked. “Yes, because Ronaldo told me about Viti saying I was dead and trying to make others follow Iceclaw. ‘Bend the knee,’ he said. It’s like Viti is trying to
Damien After deflecting Erik’s questioning about the events of the previous evening, we briefly discussed business, confirming a few shipments, and setting up a time for me to come visit my center in their territory. After we ended the meeting, I asked Rolf to follow up with our allies in the South, but to do so carefully, reminding him that the packs needed to believe whatever lie Iceclaw was peddling about Katla’s death. Their lack of technology in the Southern packs was really a hindrance. I walked out looking forward to being punched in the face by a waft of Lavender, Eucalyptus, and imminent snow, but I found that is was dissapating, like it was being siphoned down a drain. I ran up the stairs to the room where she had been, but she wasn’t there. I followed her scent down the hallway past the art that some human interior decorator had hung and down the stairs. I walked past the living room, to the entryway by the elevator. On th
Katla As we walked, I noticed that the city’s endless interlocking roads were organized into large rectangles named by numbers. Roads that ran east to west were even numbers and north to south were odd. Silver Tower was in the very center of the city, “prime real estate” Clarissa explained, and depending on the direction we were from that, a north, south, east, or west was added. “Meant to be Alpha?” Clarissa asked. Humans asked a lot of questions. “Something… happened… when the announcement was meant to be made,” I said, becoming uncomfortable. “Did you realize Damien was your mate and decided to be his Luna instead?” I could tell she was proud of herself using wolf words. “Not exactly,” I said. We rounded a corner and stopped in front of a glass door with a coffee bean fashioned to look like a full moon tucked behind a cloud and the name “The Roaming Bean” above the logo and “Proudly Serving Wolves and Humans for 75 year
Katla I sat on the floor, re-reading my father’s letter, trying to make sense of the words as an anger crept in along the edges of my confusion. How could he have kept this from me? How could he have left me to figure this out on my own? It was all just so unfair. I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t ask to be Alpha. I didn’t ask to be married. I didn’t ask to be descended from the Moon Goddess whatever the fuck that meant. And I sure as hell didn’t ask for my father to leave me and my pack to become whatever it is now. I had never felt more alone. Silent tears spilled down my cheeks. I felt a hand on my shoulder. “Katla…er, Miss Iceclaw? Is everything ok?” I looked up through my wet lashes and saw Clarissa. She crouched down, and handed me a tissue. “Do you want to talk about it?” I took the tissue and began wiping my eyes, not sure what I wanted. “Is it Mr. Silverburn? Did he hurt you?” That question shook me back to the present.
Katla My Dearest Daughter, Alpha-in Waiting Katla , From the moment you first opened your eyes beneath the silver glow of the moon, I knew your path would be unlike any other. You were not simply born into this pack—you were chosen by something far older, far greater than any Alpha who has walked these lands before us.As you step forward to claim your place as Alpha, there is a truth I have carried for many years, waiting for the right moment to place it in your hands. You are not only my daughter. You are directly descended from the wolves of lore, the Lycan race, and have been the subject of prophecy for a millennia. In time, you will come to understand what that means and you will come to wield the moonstone that has been passed from mother to daughter, gifted from the Goddess at the beginning of time, lying dormant until the time of prophecy. The strength of the Moon Goddess flows through your veins as surely as your own blood. Th
