Ava’s POV

The mountain is struck by snow and the windows gently rattle against the frames.

Sometimes after dusk, the storm rolled in and over the Valley Creek within a few hours burying it in white silence. The other side of the strategy room windows is now buried in snow which seems to be falling out of the sky and the rest of the outside world is obscured in shadow and wind.

Lanternlight illuminates maps and paper inside.

The room has a faint bit of an ink and cedar smoke and melted wax aroma

  • The Alpha's Rejected Mate    Chapter 164

AvaThe map room hadn't changed. That was the first thing that struck me as I entered the room. The iron cabinet stood against the far wall. The old maps were pinned up as they always had been. The books still took up residence on the shelves. The table still bore the scars of past work. The little dents and scratches were all there, testament to a room that had seen its share of people trying to make sense of the world. Nothing had changed. And yet, everything had. The first time I stood in this room, I was afraid of what the future would bring. Now I sat at this table, with my daughter studying at one side. It was still hard to believe at times. Milrac sat across from me, scanning reports. I read through the latest archive updates. We said little, and yet, that was fine. There was an ease between us that had been forged over decades of knowing when to speak and when to let the silence stand. The room was not empty. It was peaceful. Outside, the Valley Creek continu

AvaThe archive had never been this quiet. It was strange, considering there was more of a turnout than I'd ever seen before. The hall was packed with scholars standing beside students, council members at the front, and families gathered along the wall. Those who spent their lives debating minuscule details sat quietly, patiently even, as they waited for something far greater than their usual disputes. It was all very surreal, but the most surprising part was how quiet the archive was. Not empty and abandoned, but expectant, reverent even. As if whatever was about to happen was something these people understood and respected. I stood at the back of the hall, watching all the preparations take place, and the sight still stole my breath every time. This place, not so long ago, was a vault where information was hidden and forgotten. Where names were erased and rewritten so that certain facts were far harder to stumble upon by accident. Whatever this was, the archive's purpose was th

Milrac I used to believe that important events in my life would announce themselves. A battle. A decision. An action with lasting repercussions. Moments that forced people to act. That demanded careful consideration. That could change literally everything. But I learned with time, that most of life happened outside such moments. That they were only afterwards, often in their wake. That people lived and dealt with the aftermath of significant events in ways that were rarely important or powerful. That was the sort of realisation that made me gaze long into the distance as I walked along Valley Creek. The mountain had ceased to be a place of trials and tests. Not because it had grown weak, and easier to overcome. Because it had changed, because people had changed. They no longer struggled as they used to. Their lives, their existence, had transcended, evolved beyond merely surviving. And I wanted to see their life, to witness their victories and struggles that felt stra

Ava The mountain was waking up in autumn. It was slow. It always woke up in the valley; the first sounds of the day filtered up from the courtyards, the chattering of children clutching schoolbags to their chests as they trod between the buildings, the sound of voices rising and falling in conversation as families walked along with them. Researchers had already started their morning arguments somewhere in the depths of the archive before most people had even finished their breakfasts. Nothing new there. The clinic was opening for the day. The healers were double-checking their schedules, the patients were arriving, reports were being skimmed over during their patrols. Patrols were switching, taking their turns up and down the mountain paths. It was all the usual business, but the feel of it was different. It was a different sort of busyness. Not the frantic business of people getting ready for something terrible to happen. Just the business of people living. Getting on with t

Ava The celebration raged on long after the sun had set. That was something I had learned about happy events. They never ended when they were supposed to. People didn't leave when the agreed-upon time had arrived. They lingered because they wanted to. The Moonlight Pack gardens were a riot of warm lantern light. It was a cool evening, though no one seemed to mind. Families gathered together. Children dashed from table to table. Voices mingled into a single, happy symphony. The music had changed several times. The food had been replenished more than once. Someone had launched into yet another story about Dario, who had finally had enough, declaring it was the last time he would listen to that tale. Nobody had stopped to acknowledge his claim. It was, probably, the first time in his life that Dario was helpless to dictate the course of a meeting, and I had to admit, I didn't blame him in the least. I stood at the periphery of it all, watching people enjoy themselves. I

The first thing that caught my attention when I walked into the Moonlight Pack gathering hall was the noise. Not the music. Not the voices. The laughter. I had heard plenty of that before in this very hall. Voices raised in arguments, warnings, orders, pain, the preparation for battles that never came. But tonight was different. Tonight, instead of arguing, people were happy. Lanterns were hanging from the ceiling, throwing warm shadows on the tables covered in food. Families were chatting, bringing platters of food from the long tables to each other. No one was watching the exits. No one was waiting for the other shoe to drop. No one was speculating which of the guests would betray who else by morning. That was something to celebrate indeed. Dario was right by the entrance, already looking uncomfortable. That was the first thing I noticed. The second was that no one was paying attention to him. He should have been used to it by now. Decades of making the difficult de
