I stared outside my window at the woods outside the pack headquarters. Sometimes I needed to just think about any worries I had as a future Alpha. It always helped me with figuring out solutions to my problems. My heart rate also slowed down.

A knock came on my door a few minutes later. My dad stood on the other side as I opened the door. I definitely had my dad's long nose and his eye shape. He had the same shade of hair color as me too.

He motioned for me to follow him which I obeyed. He seemed even more serious than usual as we walked side by side down the hall.

"Cleo, I think it's time you started doing more Alpha responsibilities. It's nearly your time to take over for me," dad said while we kept walking.

"I completely agree and need to get more experience. There's so many things I need to learn still."

He smiled wide and wrapped me in a hug, "I'm so happy that you want to learn more about being an Alpha. I can rest easy when you take over for me one day."

He led me towards the elderly members of the pack that were sitting by the fireplace in the large living area. They all looked at me eagerly, and I prepared myself to listen to all of their issues and concerns. I genuinely cared about what they wished for and wanted to make others happy.

I had to go back to my duties as the future Alpha after my birthday was over. I checked on the elderly wolves. They were who I gave extra worry about giving attention to.

One elderly man came right up to me and asked, "May I talk to you about a major concern of mine?"

"Sure. What seems to be the problem?"

"The roof keeps leaking above my room and has been for the past week. Can you please do something about it?"

"I will be sure to get the roof repaired as soon as possible. I promise," I told the elderly man who had concern all over his face.

"Thank you so much. We all will appreciate this. You'll make a great Alpha one day Cleo." He smiled at me and added, "I mean it too."

I smiled and said, "You're very welcome and thank you so much. That means a lot to hear that."

I moved on to the next elderly member who had a concern and listened to them. It wasn't long before we got interrupted by mom.

She said, "Could you please do me a favor and check on our more private pack members?"

"I can do that. What else needs done?"

Nothing else comes to mind. That'll be all for now."

"Okay. I'm on it."

I started heading off in the direction of our cabin's meeting room. I kept walking until I reached the meeting room and found no one in there. It was strange since members hung out there frequently.

There was one pack member that came to mind for me. His name was Zander Underwood. I always spotted him off by himself and not interacting with other pack members. I wasn't sure what his deal was, as we didn't talk with each other much.

A lot of my fellow members who were girls thought he was so attractive. Zander had hair that forever looked messy in a stylish way, and it was almost down to his shoulders. His hair was as black as coal and his eyes were a piercing blue color. He also had high cheekbones that made me jealous.

I made a patrol to rooms of members who did not majorly participate within the pack. When I got to Zander's room, I got an urge to see him. I felt it in my soul and my heart raced at an unusual rate that was normally for Ash.

I walked into his room and my heart beat louder. Why was I so pulled to him? My gut feeling told me the reason. He was my mate. I ran a hand through my hair and held back from screaming. I almost wanted to cry at the disappointment at the realization.

I calmly said, "Hey Zander."

"Did you really come here just to say hey?"

"No. Actually I came to tell you something."

Zander raised an eyebrow and said, "Sure why not. I want to know what you know."

I tried to say nicely, "Well, turns out you're my mate. But I've got to reject you." I paused and added, "I'm sorry but I already have someone who I want to be with. I hope you understand. It's nothing personal."

Zander gave a lopsided smile and said, "Sorry to break it to you, but you aren't my type. I'm rejecting you right back princess." He moved closer to me and said, "I mean, you're pretty but I couldn't see us working out."

I glared at him and put my hands on my hips before saying, "You're rejecting me too? How dare you!"

"I'm sure this isn't the first time someone's rejected you."

"Excuse me?"

Why did he have the nerve to say that? It made me so ticked off that I wanted to hit him.

Zander sighed and said, "Don't take it so hard." He gave a disinterested look and added, "Is that all you wanted to tell me future Alpha?"

"I'm not done yet. Do you seriously not want to be my mate? I can't believe you."

Zander looked tired of the conversation but told me, "Yeah I don't want to be your mate. Nothing personal just like you said." He added, "Unless you changed your mind."

Was he serious? I couldn't believe he said it wasn't personal and about me changing my mind. He was infuriating. That made me so ticked off. Steam would've come out of my ears if we were cartoons.

I wanted to tell him off but instead said, "I won't change my mind. Not ever. You can just keep being by yourself like you normally do. I don't care."

Zander laughed and said, "That's fine with me princess."

I tried hard to resist slamming his door on my way out. How could he reject me? He was the one who was supposed to be hurt by my rejection. Without realizing it, I started curling my hand into a fist. I uncurled it as I walked back to my room.

I had never been so insulted by someone as him. I really hoped my feeling in my soul was wrong. No way would that type of person be my mate. He was no Ash. I kept hearing his words repeat in my head. "I'm rejecting you

right back princess."

I groaned and pictured wiping that smirk off his face. He really shouldn't have rejected like that.

I hoped I wouldn't have to see him again, but I knew that wasn't the case. He was my mate whether I liked it or not.

The next morning, I woke to Zander's sleeping face next to me. My heart almost burst with how much I loved him. I smiled to myself remembering the day before. I stroked his hair and moved a strand away from his eyes.It was almost hard to stop stroking his hair. As Zander slept, I heard him say something. I thought it was sweet how he said my name while sleeping. I knew what he was dreaming about and felt happy he couldn't get me off his mind. Zander wouldn't get out of my mind either.A few more minutes later, I got of bed and went into the shower with my clothes from the day before. I didn't care if I repeated my outfit. While I was waiting for the water to get hot, Zander came in and slowly took in the sight of me. He was still naked from our night together.Zander approached me and whispered in my ear, "Want me to join you?"I nodded my head and stepped into the shower. The water was hot and so was Zander's gaze.Zander pressed me against the wall and knelt down near my fe

I interrupted Zander after I found him in the kitchen eating dinner. "Do you want to hang out?"As I looked at Zander, I realized something. I knew I could be with Zander since Ash was out of my life. I didn't have to keep my promise to him anymore, and he had Candice now. Zander got up and went over to me and kissed my cheek. "Just let me finish my dinner first, and I'll meet you in my room."I headed towards his room and sat down on his desk chair. Before I had never looked around his room and decided to check it out. He had a board with drawings pinned to it. Some of them were of me and others were of wolves. Suddenly Zander's voice startled me, "Do you like what you see?""These drawings are really good. I didn't know you had this talent.""I get it from my mom. She was an artist back in the day. I learned from her.""I'm sure she'd be proud of you."Zander got quiet and didn't say anything back. Had I gone too far by saying that? I didn't want him to feel grief all over

Zander and I kissed for a while and then went back to just cuddling. Suddenly, a knock came on the door. Zander groaned and looked up in annoyance.I got up and answered the door. It was Megan and she had a look of relief on her face. She hugged me and said, "Thank God you're alive. I was so worried when I lost sight of you outside."Her words made me tear up a little. "I'm glad you're alive too. I was worried about you during the battle."Megan's eyes filled with tears, and she hugged me tighter. I needed her comfort from the horrible ambush we had just gotten over. It made me feel a hint better.Megan asked, "Have you seen your parents yet?"I shook my head no and asked, "Why, have they been looking for me?"Megan nodded her head yes and walked away. My parents probably thought I was dead. I felt extremely guilty for letting them worry about me for so long. I walked out the door with Zander trailing behind me. We got to my parents' room quickly, and I urgently knocked on th

When I finished fighting another warrior, I tried to get close to Zander. He was still running towards Maurice.Suddenly, a few of Maurice's lackies blocked Zander's path. Maurice was going to get away. I had to help Zander out. Maurice didn't deserve to escape. He needed to pay for his crime. I would gladly help Zander to bring him down.Someone came running at Zander and pushed him to the ground. He was held by his hair, and I rushed to be at his side.I smacked the warrior with my wooden staff in the back. He lost his grip on Zander's hair and fell to the ground. Zander didn't waste time in pounding the guy. I searched the area but didn't see Maurice around. Had he already run away? I hoped I was wrong.More and more warriors came towards us. It seemed like the fighting would never end with how many of them there were. For some reason, I checked to see if Megan was around. I hadn't seen my friend around for a while. Was she okay?A few seconds later, I spotted Megan and she w

Ash sprinted off before I could even go after him. Was he scared of me or something?I chased after him but got stopped by a sudden warrior. The warrior was a girl a little older than me. She had a nasty scar across her cheek. The girl tried to knock me down with her wooden staff. I narrowly avoided being smacked by her staff and rushed away from her. She trailed after me and attempted to whack me with the staff again.I grabbed the staff out of her hands and swept her off her feet. She fell to the floor with a thud. I took the opportunity to kick her in the side and wanted her to stay down. Before anyone else showed, I ran towards the living room. There were many warriors fighting against our members who hadn't had their dinner spiked. Luckily, not everyone in our pack was a guard.I spotted Megan fighting against a guy who was taller than she was. Of course, she was kicking his ass and getting a lot of good kicks and punches in.Where was Zander? My heart sped up at the though

I tended to Zander's wounds over the next few days, and he got better. My presence helped him heal even faster than usual, despite the fractured ribs he had. I still can't believe that Ash would attack him so underhandedly. Meanwhile, I was still trying to forget about his betrayal.Being back home at my pack helped me feel better. I needed to get my mind off of Ash and what he did to me. Candice was someone I needed to avoid as well. No way was I seeing my traitorous sister anytime soon. She made me feel disgusted when I looked at her.So far when I had passed by Candice, I avoided eye contact and wouldn't talk to her. She hadn't tried to talk to me either. I just hoped our parents hadn't noticed our behavior. They knew we didn't get along the best, but at least we tolerated each other.A moment later, I texted Megan if she wanted to hang out and do something. It was the early afternoon, and I was taking a break from any Alpha training. It seemed time that I finally got some moment
