The steam from the hot shower washed away the grime, sweat, and smell of burnt rubber from my morning on the track. I stood in front of the full-length mirror in my penthouse dressing room, drying my hair with a towel while staring at my reflection.

My skin was still warm from the sun, and my muscles ached slightly from the sheer physical effort of holding the car through turn four. But my physical fatigue was nothing compared to the mental chaos Nova Cross had introduced into my life over the past forty-eight hours.

She was everywhere. In my head during the middle of the night, at the head of my corporate boardroom in the morning, and standing at the pit lane demanding impossible lap times. Most high-society women I dealt with were eager to play the role of the supportive partner, smiling for cameras and enjoying the glamorous perks of my fame.

Nova didn't care about my fame. She wanted total control over my empire.

A soft knock at my front door interrupted my thoughts. I threw on a pair of dark trousers and walked down the hallway to answer it.

Standing on the threshold was a young man in a crisp black courier uniform, holding a heavy garment bag crafted from dark charcoal canvas.

"Mr. Vance?" the courier asked politely. "Ms. Cross had this delivered directly from the atelier in Milan. She instructed me to make sure you received it before seven o'clock."

I accepted the heavy bag, giving the courier a brief nod before closing the door. I unzipped the canvas, revealing a bespoke tuxedo in dark midnight blue. The lapels were black silk, and resting in a velvet box inside the bag was a crisp white dress shirt with black onyx studs instead of standard buttons.

There was a small, heavy card tucked into the pocket of the velvet box. I opened it to find her neat, elegant handwriting.

Wear the suit, Damon. The investors at Apex Capital prefer their assets properly wrapped. I will pick you up at seven-thirty.

I stared at the note, my jaw clenching tightly. Part of me wanted to toss the tuxedo onto the floor, pull on my favorite leather jacket, and turn up in whatever I felt like wearing. But as I ran my thumb over the smooth silk of the lapel, I realized that playing along with her game was the only way I was going to find a weakness in her armor.

By seven-twenty-five, I had finished dressing. The tuxedo fitted my broad shoulders and lean frame with terrifying precision. It felt as though a tailor had spent three days measuring every single inch of my body, yet Nova had arranged it with a single phone call.

I was adjusting my cuff links when my phone chimed on the granite counter.

Downstairs.

I took a deep breath, grabbed my wallet and phone, and headed down the private elevator to the building lobby.

A sleek black luxury sedan was parked by the curb, its tinted windows reflecting the warm golden lights of the evening street. The rear door opened automatically as I approached.

I stepped inside the cool, leather-scented interior, sliding onto the rear bench.

Nova was sitting on the opposite side of the spacious cabin, holding a glass of sparkling water. If she had looked commanding in her pantsuit earlier, she was breathtaking tonight. She wore a floor-length black velvet gown with a subtle side slit that revealed a pair of strapped heels. Her dark hair was styled in soft, cascading waves that fell over one shoulder, and a diamond choker glittered softly against the pale skin of her neck.

Her dark eyes swept over me from my shined shoes to my collar, evaluating every line of the midnight blue suit.

"You actually wore it," she noted, her raspy velvet voice filling the quiet space of the luxury car. "I half expected you to turn up in a leather jacket just to demonstrate your rebellious nature."

"I know when to respect high craftsmanship," I replied smoothly, leaning back against the soft leather upholstery. "The Italian cut is flawless. Though I am curious how you managed to get my exact shoulder and waist measurements without asking me."

Nova raised her glass, taking a small sip before giving me a slow, mysterious smile. "I manage multi-million-dollar sports teams for a living, Damon. Figuring out a driver's frame from his telemetry suit and physical assessment files takes roughly three minutes."

"You really study every detail, don't you?" I asked, turning my head to look directly into her eyes as the car pulled out into the city traffic.

"Details are the difference between success and catastrophic failure," Nova answered, her tone shifting into something sharper, more analytical. "Tonight isn't just a casual dinner. Apex Capital is introducing Vance Racing to our primary European co-investors. They are conservative, old-money venture capitalists from Switzerland and Germany. They care about brand stability, decorum, and financial restraint."

"And you think I lack decorum?" I raised an eyebrow, amused by her assessment.

"I think you are accustomed to being the biggest persona in every room you enter," she corrected, sliding her eyes over my face. "Tonight, you let me handle the financial negotiations. You smile for the cameras, answer questions about your racing strategy, and keep your fiery temper in check."

"You want me to play the silent trophy driver," I said, a low growl entering my voice as I leaned closer to her side of the car. "Is that what this suit is for?"

Nova didn't back away as I invaded her personal space. Instead, she turned her head toward me, her exotic black-vanilla fragrance wrapping around my senses like a silk blanket.

"I want you to be the professional world champion I invested sixty million dollars in," she whispered, her gaze dropping to my lips for a split second before returning to my eyes. "Unless, of course, you lack the internal discipline to play the part for three hours."

I held her gaze for several long seconds, feeling the familiar, electrical pull that seemed to exist whenever we were within arm's reach of each other.

"Watch me," I murmured softly.

The car stopped five minutes later in front of L'Etoile, an exclusive, three-Michelin-starred restaurant nestled in the heart of the historic financial district. Valets in formal uniforms hurried to open the doors as camera flashes exploded along the velvet ropes lined up outside the entrance.

Reporters and luxury lifestyle photographers shouted my name as we stepped onto the red carpet.

"Damon! Over here!"

"Mr. Vance, is this your new majority partner?"

"Damon, comments on the Monaco qualifier!"

I placed a gentle, firm hand against the small of Nova's back as we moved past the crowd. The fabric of her velvet dress felt impossibly soft beneath my palm, and I felt her body tense slightly at my touch before she adjusted her posture and put on a brilliant, high-society smile for the cameras.

The private dining room on the top floor of the restaurant was lined with historic wine bottles and illuminated by soft crystal chandeliers. A massive oak table sat at the center of the room, occupied by six elderly men in dark double-breasted suits.

"Ah, Nova!" an elderly gentleman with silver hair and sharp blue eyes stood up, extending a hand as we entered. "The woman of the hour."

"Lord Harrington," Nova greeted him warmly, shaking his hand with polished grace. "Allow me to introduce our primary driver and three-time world champion, Damon Vance."

Lord Harrington looked at me, his sharp gaze inspecting my presence. "Mr. Vance. I must admit, when Apex Capital announced their acquisition of your racing team, several board members were skeptical. We know your skill behind the wheel is unmatched, but your recent off-track publicity had some of our Swiss partners concerned about brand exposure."

I felt a surge of irritation rise in my chest, but before I could speak, Nova stepped forward, placing a cool, delicate hand over my forearm. Her touch was subtle, but the pressure of her fingers was an explicit reminder of her warning in the car.

"Lord Harrington," Nova spoke up, her voice ringing with absolute authority that silenced the entire table. "Damon's focus is entirely locked on the upcoming season. What the media interprets as distraction is simply the intense, uncompromising drive of an elite athlete who refuses to settle for second place. His performance in the telemetry testing this morning proved that his instincts are sharper than ever."

Harrington raised an eyebrow, looking between Nova and me before a warm smile broke across his weathered face. "Defended with true passion, Ms. Cross. It seems Apex Capital has complete confidence in its chief asset."

"I don't invest in assets I don't believe in, Lord Harrington," Nova replied smoothly, taking her seat at the head of the table and gesturing for me to sit right beside her.

For the next two hours, the dinner proceeded like a complex chess match. Nova commanded the room with effortless brilliance. She quoted financial figures, projected return metrics, and outlined team expansion plans without consulting a single piece of paper. The conservative investors who had entered the room filled with skepticism were completely spellbound by her intellect and poise.

I watched her closely throughout the meal. The sharp, ruthless executive who had challenged me in the pit bay was also a master diplomat. Every movement she made, every subtle laugh she gave, was calculated to achieve maximum leverage.

When the main course was cleared, Lord Harrington leaned across the table toward me.

"Tell me, Mr. Vance," he said, taking a sip of vintage red wine. "How does it feel to transition from running your own team to answering to a managing partner like Ms. Cross?"

The entire table fell quiet, waiting to see how the famously proud champion would answer. Marcus, who was sitting near the end of the table, looked like he was holding his breath, his eyes wide with anxiety.

I looked at Nova. She was holding her wine glass, her dark eyes watching me over the rim with a quiet, challenging intensity. She was waiting to see if I would push back, if I would let my ego ruin the delicate balance she had spent two hours building.

I leaned back in my chair, resting my elbow on the table and giving Lord Harrington a slow, confident smile.

"Running a racing team is about speed, Lord Harrington," I said, keeping my voice calm and composed. "Partnering with Apex Capital is about power. Nova brings a level of strategic discipline that forces everyone around her to elevate their game. I don't mind answering to someone who demands perfection, because perfection is the only standard I accept on the track."

A subtle, collective sigh of relief seemed to pass through the room. Lord Harrington chuckled warmly, raising his glass toward me. "Well said, champion. To perfection and victory in Monaco!"

"To victory," the rest of the board chimed in, lifting their glasses in unison.

I glanced over at Nova. Her glass was raised, but her eyes were locked entirely on mine. Deep inside those dark, piercing irises, the cold corporate shield had slipped away for a fraction of a second, revealing a look of genuine intrigue and quiet approval.

She knew what I had just done. I had backed her up, validated her authority in front of her highest-tier investors, and turned a potential trap into a complete victory for both of us.

By eleven o'clock, the dinner had officially concluded. The investors shook our hands with enthusiastic warmth before departing in their private limousines.

Nova and I stood on the quiet balcony of the restaurant overlooking the shimmering city lights below. The cool night air brushed against my face, carrying the distant hum of city traffic.

"You handled Harrington remarkably well," Nova said softly, leaning her forearms against the stone balustrade and looking out at the skyline. "I was expecting you to bite his head off when he brought up your media reputation."

I walked up to the balcony railing, standing right beside her. I took off my dark tuxedo jacket, holding it out toward her.

"You look cold," I said quietly.

Nova looked at the heavy midnight-blue jacket in my hands, then up at my face. For the first time since I had met her, she hesitated. But the cool night breeze made her shoulders shiver slightly, and she allowed me to drape the heavy jacket over her bare shoulders.

The jacket engulfed her delicate frame, carrying my warm body heat and subtle cologne. She pulled the lapels tight around her chest, letting out a soft, contented breath.

"You surprised me tonight, Damon," she murmured, looking out at the city lights. "Most men with your level of success are far too fragile to let anyone else share the spotlight."

"I don't care about the spotlight, Nova," I said, turning my body so I was facing her side profile. "I care about real strength. You proved tonight that you aren't just trying to boss me around to satisfy an ego trip. You actually know how to build an empire."

Nova turned her head, her face mere inches from mine under the soft moonlight. The playful, mocking edge in her demeanor was completely gone, replaced by a deep, breathless tension that made the space between us feel suffocatingly small.

"I don't build empires to lose them, Damon," she whispered, her dark eyes searching mine with intense focus. "Including this team. Including you."

"I am not an asset you can just buy and lock in a vault, Nova," I murmured, taking a slow step closer until my boots brushed the bottom of her gown. "If you want me on your side, you are going to have to give up some of that control you hold so tightly."

Nova raised her hand slowly, her slender fingers resting lightly against the silk lapel of my dress shirt. She tilted her chin up, her lips hovering agonizingly close to mine.

"Control is the only thing that keeps people like us safe, champion," she whispered softly.

Before I could answer, her phone chimed loudly inside her clutch bag, shattering the quiet spell hanging between us.

Nova blinked, stepping back smoothly and letting her hand slip away from my chest. She pulled her phone out, checked the glowing screen, and her expression instantly hardened back into her familiar corporate mask.

"The transport team just finished packing the telemetry cars for the flight to Europe," she said, her voice returning to its composed, professional tone as she adjusted my jacket over her shoulders. "Our private flight to Monaco leaves at eight o’clock tomorrow morning."

She turned and began walking toward the private exit, her high heels clicking softly against the marble floor.

"Get some sleep, Damon," she called back over her shoulder without turning around. "Monaco doesn't forgive mistakes."
