The world didn’t end with a bang, but with a series of blue, holographic screens that flickered into existence like a glitch in reality.

Dimas blinked, squinting against the blinding neon light of the interface that hovered inches from his nose. Around him, the downtown district had descended into absolute carnage. People were screaming, their bodies glowing with radiant light as they absorbed "Stats" or "Classes," while others lay broken on the pavement, torn apart by creatures that looked like nightmare versions of local stray dogs.

Dimas pressed himself against the cold, damp brick of an alleyway wall, his chest heaving. He clutched his stomach, which had been empty since the morning.

"Hey, you! Get up!" a voice barked.

Dimas looked up. A man in a torn business suit was stumbling past, clutching a glowing iron sword. His eyes were wide, manic with the adrenaline of his newfound 'Warrior' class.

"Man, don't just sit there! Do you see the prompt? You have to choose a path!" the stranger shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria.

"I—I'm trying!" Dimas yelled back, his throat dry. "It just says 'Loading'! Nothing else is popping up!"

"Are you serious? Everyone gets something! Check your status screen again!"

"I am checking it! It’s just blank!"

"Then you’re a dud," the man scoffed, his face twisting into a sneer of sudden, cruel superiority. "Probably just fodder for the system. Good luck dying, pal."

The man bolted toward the main road, swinging his sword at a passing creature. Dimas watched, frozen, as the man landed a clumsy, glowing blow, sending sparks flying.

Dimas looked down at his own trembling hands. He was just a regular guy. He worked in a logistics office, he liked his coffee black, and he’d never thrown a punch in his life.

"Great. Just perfect," Dimas muttered to himself, his voice trembling. "Everyone becomes a hero, and I’m just here waiting to be dog food."

He scrambled deeper into the alley, his heart hammering against his ribs. He spotted a rusted dumpster and a discarded kitchen knife—likely dropped by someone fleeing a nearby restaurant. He snatched it up, the handle slick with grease. It felt pathetic in his grip.

A low growl echoed from the shadows.

A mangy, grey-furred beast—a 'Low-Level Scavenger'—emerged, its teeth dripping with translucent slime. It snarled, fixing its yellow, slit-pupiled gaze on Dimas.

"Okay, okay," Dimas whispered, his knuckles white around the handle of the knife. "I can do this. Just stab it, right? Like in the movies."

"Come on, you ugly mutt," Dimas shouted, his voice cracking. "You want a piece of me?"

The beast lunged.

Dimas swung the knife wildly, but his footing failed him. He tripped over a loose brick and sprawled into the dirt. The knife clattered out of his reach. The monster pounced, landing on his chest, its weight pinning him down. It snapped its jaws, inches from his face, the smell of rotting meat filling his nostrils.

"No, no, no! Get off!" Dimas shrieked, kicking uselessly.

Suddenly, the air in front of his face rippled. A translucent, golden screen bloomed in the dark alley, glowing brighter than the cold, blue system messages of the others.

[System Initialization Complete.]

[Class Found: Gourmet Chef (Unique)]

[Skill Acquired: 'Basic Fried Rice' unlocked.]

[Requirement: Cooking tools detected. Ingredients found.]

"What? What is this?" Dimas gasped, staring at the screen.

The beast swiped at his cheek, drawing blood. Dimas groaned, his brain firing on overdrive. He looked at the dumpster nearby—someone had tossed out a bag of rice and some half-empty containers of seasoning in the panic of the shift.

"Wait, I can make this work!"

Dimas grabbed a discarded metal pot lid from the ground and held it up like a shield, shoving the beast off his chest. He didn't think; he just moved. He scrambled toward the discarded ingredients, his hands moving with a strange, unnatural precision that didn't belong to him.

"You think you’re hungry?" Dimas muttered, his terror morphing into a weird, feverish focus. "Let's see if you like this."

He ignited a small, portable camping stove that had been abandoned nearby. The flame flared to life, bright and blue. He threw the rice into a dented pan, his movements fluid, rhythmic.

"What are you doing, you crazy bastard?" a voice called out.

Dimas ignored it. He was in the zone. The System highlighted the ingredients in glowing outlines, guiding his hand. He tossed in a pinch of salt, a dash of soy sauce, and a sprinkle of dried onion.

"Keep back, you oversized stray!" Dimas shouted at the beast, which was pacing, confused by the sudden, intense heat and the strange flickers of light around the human.

The air began to change.

It wasn't the smell of blood or the metallic tang of magic that defined this new, chaotic world. It was the rich, savory, mouth-watering aroma of garlic-infused rice, searing in high-heat oil. The smell was golden, thick, and intoxicating.

"Wait, is that... food?" the stranger from before—who had retreated back into the alley—stopped, his sword lowering. "Why does that smell so good? I haven't eaten in ten hours!"

The Scavenger beast stopped growling. It tilted its head, its hackles lowering as it took a tentative sniff of the air. It whimpered, looking at the pan.

"Look at that," Dimas whispered, his eyes widening as he stared at the plate. "It’s... it’s shining."

The fried rice shimmered with a soft, warm luster, steam curling into the night air like a siren’s song.

"Is that for me?" the stranger asked, stepping closer, his face drawn and pale. "Man, I’m starving. Give me a bite, and I’ll protect you from the next wave."

"Back off," Dimas warned, though he felt a sudden, surge of confidence. "This is my dish."

"Don't be like that, buddy! Look at the monsters! They're stopping!"

Dimas looked up. Indeed, the beasts in the surrounding area had frozen. They were sniffing the air, their predatory instincts battling with an overwhelming, primal hunger triggered by the aroma of the rice.

"What did I just make?" Dimas wondered aloud, his heart racing.

The scent didn't just drift through the alley; it surged outward, riding the wind, cutting through the smog of the ruined city. It reached the main plaza, crossing over the rubble and the bodies of those who had died.

Suddenly, the ground began to tremble.

It wasn't the light, pattering tremor of a Scavenger. It was a heavy, rhythmic thud that vibrated in Dimas's very marrow. Every step sounded like a falling building.

The stranger’s face drained of all color. "Hey... do you hear that?"

Dimas looked toward the street. Far off in the distance, past the burning skyscrapers, a pair of massive, glowing red eyes ignited in the darkness. A creature, ten times the size of the Scavengers, crashed through a steel-reinforced wall with ease.

It wasn't looking for humans to kill. It was looking for the source of the smell.

"Oh, crap," Dimas whispered, clutching the pan of fried rice to his chest. "I think I just rang the dinner bell for the main course."

The gate behind them didn't just close; it sealed with a heavy, pressurized hiss that echoed through the unnaturally quiet courtyard. Dimas felt the sound vibrate in his teeth."Welcome, Chef," the man in the white robes repeated, his voice smooth and airy, like he was reciting a well-rehearsed prayer. "We’ve been waiting to see what you could do with the ingredients we provide."Dimas stared at the kitchen. It was a masterpiece of stainless steel and industrial precision, sitting right in the middle of a world that was supposed to be rotting. "You’ve got a lot of high-end hardware for a place that's supposedly hiding from the system.""The system provides for those who understand its true purpose," the man replied, gesturing toward the gleaming countertops. "I am Brother Julian. We are the architects of the New Table."Rafael stepped up beside Dimas, his hand never straying more than an inch from the hilt of his broken sword. "The 'New Table'? Sounds like a cult name if I ever heard

Dimas stood frozen, his pulse drumming a frantic rhythm against the cold metal of the freezer door. The note didn't feel like a threat; it felt like a spotlight. He read the elegant, flowing script one more time, his fingers tracing the ink as if to verify it was real."Rafael?" he called out, his voice cracking. He didn't turn around, keeping his eyes locked on the paper.A heavy thud echoed from the hatch, followed by the clatter of a boot hitting the concrete. Rafael emerged from the shadows, his chest heaving, his armor stained with fresh grime. He slumped against the wall, sliding down until he hit the floor."Clear," Rafael gasped, wiping sweat from his brow. "They lost our trail at the secondary pier. I led them toward the container yard."Dimas didn't move. He held the paper out, his hand shaking. "Rafael. You need to see this."Rafael squinted in the dim, flickering emergency light of the warehouse. He stood up with a groan, taking the note. He read it in silence, his express

The neon haze of the city skyline cast long, flickering shadows against the brick facade of a derelict warehouse as Dimas and Rafael ducked into the relative safety of a shipping container. The air here was stale, smelling of rusted iron and salt, but for the moment, it was quiet.Dimas dropped his pack and pulled out the Dragon-Fire Saffron. It hummed in his hand, a dull, rhythmic vibration that seemed to sync with his own pulse."You’ve been staring at that thing like it’s going to start talking to you," Rafael said, leaning against the corrugated metal wall. He was still picking dried monster ichor off his jacket sleeve. "Is it going to explode again?""I don't think so," Dimas murmured, his eyes fixed on the microscopic runes etched into the pod. "The system says it’s 'Mythic.' Everything else I’ve found has been common or rare. This… this feels like it has a weight to it. Like it’s conscious."Rafael grunted, sliding down to sit on the floor. "Conscious or not, as long as it does

The golden light erupted from Rafael like a miniature sun, scouring the shadows from the corners of the basement. The massive creature—a sprawling, multi-limbed terror of scales and jagged bone—shrieked, a sound like grinding tectonic plates, and recoiled from the sheer intensity of the aura.Rafael didn’t wait for it to recover. He moved with a speed that defied physics, his boots cracking the concrete floor as he launched himself into the air."Stay down, Dimas!" Rafael roared, his voice layered with a resonant, metallic hum that wasn't there before."Don't you dare die on me, you idiot!" Dimas scrambled back, his hands still trembling from the heat of the cooking pot. "Finish it! Just finish it!"Rafael twisted in mid-air, his broken sword glowing with a blinding, iridescent indigo light—the residual energy of the infusion binding to the steel. The creature whipped a massive, spiked tail toward him, intending to swat him like a fly."Too slow!" Rafael barked, slashing through the a

The basement air was thick, swirling with iridescent violet steam that clung to the damp walls like a living thing. Dimas stared at the pan of 'Ether Broth,' his heart thudding in sync with the broth’s rhythmic, indigo pulse."You really did it, didn't you?" Rafael said, his voice quiet, almost reverent as he stepped closer. "That smell... it’s not just appetizing. It’s like it’s vibrating in my marrow."Dimas wiped his forehead with the back of his sleeve, leaving a smudge of soot. "It’s doing something to the air pressure, too. Feel that?""I feel it," Rafael replied, his hand tightening on the hilt of his sword. "It’s not just us feeling it, either. The basement floor is starting to hum."Dimas glanced at the high, barred window. "Is that a bad thing? Please tell me that’s not a bad thing.""It depends on who—or what—is listening," Rafael said, his gaze shifting to the staircase. "That smell is a beacon, Dimas. A neon sign in a dark world.""I thought you said this place was secure

The transition through the ventilation shafts was a nightmare of dust, cobwebs, and the claustrophobic scent of recycled air. Dimas dragged the heavy pack of supplies, his knuckles scraping against the rusted interior of the ductwork, while Rafael moved ahead of him with the silent, predatory grace of a ghost."Keep your head down, kid," Rafael whispered back, his voice sounding oddly amplified in the narrow tunnel. "We’re almost to the basement of the old butcher shop. It’s got a concrete foundation. Thick walls. No windows for them to spot us through."Dimas adjusted his grip on the pack, his breath hitching as he felt a scrape of metal against his ribs. "Are you sure this place is secure? I can't be cooking if we’re getting raided every twenty minutes. My focus is ruined, and if my focus is ruined, the food quality drops.""It’s a butcher shop, Dimas. Think about the irony," Rafael chuckled, his eyes glinting in the dark. "It’s a fortress. I checked it out during the first wave. Th
