"Mom, who is he?" I asked him.

 

I was lying in the living room when suddenly mom came with a man.

 

"I thought you were just going to buy food tonight and tomorrow morning?" I asked mom again.

 

Neither of them spoke.

As for mom, I couldn't read her reaction as she was just looking at me.

 

"Ma what?" I just felt the man hug me, and mom started crying.

I let go of the man's embrace and held mom.

"What's going on? Can you explain?" I asked mom while taking water from the table and giving it to her.

"Your mom is sick and she needs a long treatment. I have to send her to the U.S. so that her treatment can be completed. In exchange for that, you have to work with me. A lot of money will be needed for her, and you will pay for it." Suddenly, my father answered.

 

"Martin! Don't surprise our son!" Mama shouted.

 

My father was about to answer, but I already spoke.

 

"If my mother is sick, I will treat her with my own money. I will work and not yours. You can leave. I can treat Mama." I replied politely and with emphasis to Him.

Yes, I was shocked, but I had to be strong because I am Mama's strength. It hurts me to know that Mom is sick. It hurts me that my mother is struggling, but I am not doing anything to help her.

 

"I'm leaving because I don't want drama between you and your mother. Chel, what we talked about, I hope you fulfill it," he said to mom and walked out the door.

I followed him to make sure he left.

 

"Let's get out of here, ma'am. Let's move to an apartment," I said while taking the suitcase.

 

"It's not possible, son," said mom.

 

"You need treatment; we need a quiet life like you said before. I will treat you. I don't want anyone's help," I said to Mama.

 

"Son, your Daddy needs you," said Mama.

 

"We don't need him!" I said to Mom.

 

"But son-

 

"Mom. We lived for a long time without her. I was able to study well and graduate because of you. It was just you and me for a long time, and now, only now, can I return all your sacrifices, all your hard work, and give him a good life, and then he will take it back? Who is he? What right does he have to us, to me?" I said for a long time and almost cried.

I cut mom

"He is your father, son," said Mama.
