Chapter 102

Ethan's POV

I took a deep breath and tried to conceal my anger.

I loved Bryan. We'd been friends since forever, who'd built our careers side by side, who'd been there for each other through every major life event. And sitting here, watching him bare his soul about his feelings for Cynthia, I tried to understand him.

Bryan didn't know my actual feelings for Cynthia. He thought I'd never loved her, that I'd chosen Anna, that I was only with Cynthia now because of Amber. And he respected me enough to tell me this to my face instead of going behind my back.

That had to count for something.

Even if it was tearing me apart.

"Have you told Cynthia yet?" I finally brought myself to ask, my voice surprisingly steady despite the turmoil raging inside me.

Bryan shook his head. "No. Not yet. I wanted to talk to you first. Make sure you were okay with it."

Relief flooded through me so intensely I almost sagged in my chair.

He hadn't told her yet. That meant I still h

Chapter 107Cynthia's POV While Nikolai was about to leave after dropping the packages in my trunk, a sudden commotion erupted nearby. A group of student protestors — protesting for something mild, from what I could hear, something about cafeteria hours and library access — rushed up toward the parking lot, completely oblivious to us but still chanting and waving their signs enthusiastically. The unexpected surge of people startled me. I stepped back instinctively, but there were so many of them, moving so quickly... Nikolai's arm came around me, pulling me close to shield me from the crowd rushing past. His other hand braced against my car, creating a protective barrier as students streamed around us on both sides, their voices loud and energetic. When the crowd finally passed and the noise faded, I suddenly became acutely aware of our position. Our bodies were touching. Pressed together, actually. I could smell his perfume—something woody and expensive, distinctly masculine.

Chapter 106 Cynthia's POV During the class, I was in the middle of explaining the importance of supply chain management in maintaining restaurant quality when I noticed Nikolai. He'd walked in quietly and taken a seat at the back of the lecture hall, his arms crossed, watching me with that intense focus he always seemed to have. Listening to every word like it mattered deeply to him. It was uncomfortable. Not because he was doing anything wrong, but because I could feel his eyes on me, tracking my movements as I gestured at the presentation slides, as I wrote key points on the whiteboard, as I answered students' questions. I tried to ignore him and focus on my students, but my awareness of his presence never quite faded. After the class ended and students began filing out, chattering amongst themselves about their upcoming final projects, Nikolai approached me at the front of the room. "That was excellent," he said, his accent making the compliment sound even more forma

Chapter 105 Cynthia's POV My heart betrayed me. When Ethan had said that sentence — "I love you" — my heart had leaped like it longed to hear those words. Like some pathetic, desperate part of me had been waiting three years to hear him say them. That was betrayal in the highest order. As I drove away from Walker Mansion, I hit my chest really hard with my fist, trying to stop my heart from fluttering and my stomach from feeling butterflies. At thirty-five, I was easily swayed by words from a man? Jesus Christ! I really needed to grow up. Get it together, Cynthia. He doesn't mean it. He just wants control back. He just wants to win and get you back so he can make you a door mat again and make you apologise to Anna when she plays her evil game. "Your teacher, Mrs. Pierre, was amazing yesterday," I said, trying to distract myself from my traitorous emotions. I watched Amber through the rearview mirror. He was oddly quiet, staring out the window with a contemplat

Chapter 104 Ethan's POV She looked so beautiful this morning, and then I realized how much more I'd fucked up big time. That was why so many men wanted her in their lives now. Bryan, who'd just declared his intention to pursue her last night. Nikolai Cross, the boy i underestimated was the heir to Cross Energy, who just lost his father and is about to become chairman. Then, there is Kevin Laurent, the annoying F1 racer that had dared show up in the hospital like he was practicing how to be a step dad. And that mystery man with the kid I'd seen her with at the restaurant — someone I still hadn't identified. Those were just the people I knew about. Who else would be after her that I didn't know? How many other men had recognized what I'd been too blind to see? And these men weren't just ordinary men. They were men I couldn't easily compete with. Men of the same caliber as me, or even wealthier, like Nikolai. Successful. Established. Men who hadn't spent eight years

Chapter 103 Cynthia's POV "Oh my gosh!" I heard the voice from inside the car as soon as my eyes met with Grace's through the window. She was in the back seat, and my worst fear had just materialized right in front of me. I braced myself for the worse, for her hate speech and annoying ridicule, we have not talked in three years and I knew she hadn’t changed a bit. She is not one to become any better, she is just like Anna. Evil and serpentine. Grace stepped out of the car, and I immediately noticed something was off about her movements. "Cynthia! My dearest and latest renowned Michelin chef!" With the way she spoke, her words slightly slurred, her tone overly enthusiastic, I was sure that Grace was drunk. Then Grace started approaching me, staggering slightly with each step. Who in God's name drinks at 7:45 in the morning to stupor? Grace approached with her arms spread wide open, a huge smile plastered across her face that looked almost manic. "My daugh
