Chapter 4

“I heard you applied for an internship in a private hospital and got rejected right?” How did he know about that? Only she knew of it. Was he stalking her? What ever the case may, she was displeased.

“How did you know about that?” She mumbled her perplexed expression giving her out. He chuckled and sat upright turning his attention back to his computer.

“I also know your family is in debt and your father hospitalized, but you have no money whatsoever to pay for his surgery?”

“How did you know all that? She questioned with a raging heart. What is happening?

“That doesn’t matter now, Miss Newton, as I said earlier, I have a job offer for you which you can’t afford to miss knowing that you are in need of money” he concluded now glancing back at her with a sinister stare. She gulped and said,

“What is the offer?” She mumbled

“I want you to be my caretaker!” He announced. Sitting there as if glued to her seat, she dumbfoundedly stared back at him. She opened her mouth to say something but it felt like all the twenty six English alphabet have deserted her.

“You want me to be your caretaker? Are you serious right now?” She asked. To her, it sounded almost like an insult to her career and all the dedication she had to put up with to get to where she was now. How could he just say something so demeaning and disrespectful? But then again, she can’t pay off her father’s medical bills all by herself

“Yes, I want you to be my full time caretaker which also means, you will have to move in to my home” he added. “Don’t overthink it, I have a contract that you should sign”.

“A contract? Why? I haven’t even agreed to it and here you are talking about a contract?” If this is the billionaire most girls are dreaming to be laid by, then they should also know that he has no manners whatsoever. First of all, he went through her information, secondly, he called her to his office spewing absolutely nonsense. This was actually all her fault, she shouldn’t have collected the card Rose gave her if not she wouldn’t have been there in the first place. This was all her fault.

“I am a medical student Mr lightwood, I have no idea of how to take care of people. Moreover, you are a billionaire, why don’t you go out there and search for one? I am sure they will be willing to do it for free if it means they have to see you everyday” she snapped. He kept staring at her with a void expression displaying on his face waiting for her to slow her racing horses down and when she finally did he said,

“All that doesn’t matter now miss Emma, you don’t have an internship whatsoever, and your father is in the hospital fighting for his life yet here you are, throwing away an opportunity that can safe your family from destruction? Are you willingly giving up on your father’s life because of your ego? Well, if you still don’t want it, that is the door. And one more thing, the moment you walk through that door, I promise I won’t let you have a job anywhere nor will I hire you no matter how small it is” did he just threaten her? After dismissing her so rudely? Fear, absolute fear consumed her whole figure. This man can do exactly what he just said to her if he wills. But then again, why? Why does he need her so badly till the extent of ruining her future? There are thousands of girls out there who are willing to become his doormat so why her? She doesn’t even know him, this is her first time seeing him and he is threatening her with her career? Wow! Amazing. What a beautiful way to end her evening.

“Why are you doing this? You don’t even know me so why?” She whispered gently her once raging anger now turned into one of anxiety and frustration.

“I have prepared the contract already and I am sending it to your residence first thing tomorrow morning, sign it and forward it back to me. We are done here” he said instead of giving her a reply, he dismissed her rudely. Only one thing is for sure, she has no say in this. Not because she was scared she wouldn’t get a job anywhere, but because she had already told her mother that she had gotten the internship. What would become of her when her mother finally finds out that she had lied to her since the beginning? No she wouldn’t let that happen she can’t even start thinking of what her mother might feel let alone her sick father. She gently stood up from the chair feeling dejected and walked out of the office shamelessly. She went home on the insistence of the driver that brought her to where she stupidly sealed her fate with her own hands. But what could she have done, either way, she was losing. She sighed and collapsed on her comfortable bed faced down.

‘Who does he thinks he is? How dare he blackmail her like that?’ She thought silently. The weight of the burden she carried on her mind was surprisingly heavier than the amount of lies she had prepared to tell her mother. She felt lost. The next morning as promised, he sent a contract to her and she carefully read through it.

‘You will have to abide by the rules of my home no matter what’

‘You can’t go out without my permission and if you do, make sure you have a good enough reason for doing so’

‘Make sure my kids have their meals at the appropriate time and go to sleep before their bedtime elapses. They shouldn’t be a minute late….’ And so on…. After scheming through the paper, she noticed that the billionaire was indeed hiding something if not why wouldn’t he take care of his children instead, he is hiring her as his ‘Caretaker?’ She sighed the papers and gave it to the driver then dragged her lazy feets back to her apartment. According to the contract, she is expected to start working in two days. Her mind drifted back to the paper she just signed, and couldn’t believe the amount he was willing to pay her for taking care of his three kids. He was willing to give her 700$ monthly and even added that if she makes his kids and himself happy, he might increase her pay but for now she has to go with that. Even in an advanced company, she doubts they pay their employees that much in a month but here she is, getting that from just taking care of three little kids. She was so certain that she could take care of them. Moreover, she loves kids.

Her ringing phone snatched her attention from the train of thought traveling to lala land and she answered putting it on speaker mode. She was so tired that she couldn’t even place it on her ears.

“Yes David, tell me” she said but all she heard was a sobbing sound coming from her phone and she became alarmed. “What happened?” Her panicked stricken voice asked.

The mansion was quiet. The sun had just begun to set, casting soft amber hues across the grand hall. Emma stood by the large window, watching the fading daylight play over the sprawling estate. Her thoughts were tangled, as usual, but today felt different. Alex had been unusually distant, and the moments they shared were fleeting, like wisps of smoke slipping through her fingers. Her heart raced as she turned to face him, the weight of the unspoken words hanging heavy between them. This is it, Emma, she thought, the moment you finally accept what this is. But how do you accept it when your heart betrays you at every turn? Just as her eyes locked with his, and their breaths aligned, a loud crash echoed from the front door. Emma’s eyes widened, and she turned sharply. The door swung open, revealing a figure stumbling into the mansion. Isabelle. Her clothes were torn, her hair disheveled, and her face pale. She looked like she had just walked through hell. “Alex!” Isabelle’s voice

The next morning, the Lightwood household was bustling with quiet activity as Alex rested in his room. Ethan and Abby huddled in the corner of the living room, whispering intently while Julia pretended not to care but leaned closer to catch snippets of their conversation.“We need a new plan,” Ethan said, his brow furrowed in concentration. “Daddy likes Emma, but he’s too stubborn to say it.”Abby nodded, her teddy bear perched on her lap. “Emma likes him too. She was so worried last night! They just need a little push.”Julia rolled her eyes. “Why do you two care so much? It’s not like Daddy listens to anyone.”Ethan smirked. “That’s where we come in. We’re the geniuses around here, remember?”Julia crossed her arms. “Your last plan almost got us grounded.”“And it still worked!” Abby chimed in, flashing a bright smile. “They were talking and laughing after we got caught.”Julia sighed, finally giving in. “Fine. What’s the plan this time?”Ethan grinned, leaning closer. “We’re going

Ethan and Abby regrouped in their favorite spot—the oversized beanbags in Ethan’s room—after the success of their game night. Julia leaned against the wall, arms crossed, her expression unreadable. “That went well,” Ethan said, munching on a cookie. “But they didn’t, like, do anything.” “What did you expect?” Julia shot back. “Them to fall in love over charades? This takes time.” “But we don’t have time,” Abby interjected, swinging her legs. “What if Emma leaves? Or Daddy gets too busy again?” Ethan nodded. “We need something bigger. Something… undeniable.” Julia rolled her eyes. “You’re being dramatic.” “No, he’s right!” Abby said, her voice excited. “We need a plan that makes them talk to each other, like really talk. And maybe, you know, hug or something.” Ethan snapped his fingers. “Got it! What if we pretend to fight? Like, a really big fight? Then we make them both talk to us about it, and they’ll have to work together to fix it!” Abby’s eyes widened. “But I don’t want

That evening, as the family gathered in the living room, the kids held a secret meeting in Julia’s room. Julia sat cross-legged on her bed, Ethan leaned against the dresser, and Abby was perched on the floor, her eyes gleaming with excitement. “Okay,” Julia began, “Operation Juice Spill worked… sort of. But we need something bigger.” “Bigger how?” Ethan asked, crossing his arms. Abby raised her hand. “What if we make them eat dinner together—like just the two of them? Romantic dinner!” Julia rolled her eyes. “Do you even know what ‘romantic’ means?” Abby pouted. “It means they’ll like each other more!” Ethan snickered. “What are we gonna do? Light candles and play music?” Julia’s smirk returned. “Actually, that’s not a bad idea. But first, we need to make sure Daddy doesn’t bring his work to dinner like he always does.” “How?” Abby asked, bouncing slightly. “Easy,” Julia said. “We hide his laptop and phone.” Ethan groaned. “Do you know how mad he’s gonna be?” “He’ll thank

The house was unusually quiet that evening, save for the faint hum of the air conditioning. Emma was in the kitchen finishing up the dishes, her thoughts wandering between Alex’s earlier message and the children. The calm didn’t last long.A loud slam echoed from upstairs, followed by hurried footsteps. Emma dried her hands and glanced toward the staircase just as Julia appeared, pale-faced and clutching a bundle of fabric tightly against her waist.“Julia?” Emma called, concerned.Julia froze, her expression shifting between embarrassment and panic. “I-I’m fine!” she stammered, backing toward the stairs.Emma stepped forward cautiously. “You don’t look fine. Did something happen?”“No!” Julia barked defensively, her face turning crimson. She tried to bolt, but Emma’s gentle persistence stopped her in her tracks.“Julia, talk to me,” Emma said softly. “Whatever it is, I promise it’s okay.”Julia hesitated, her grip on the fabric tightening. Her lower lip quivered as she looked away, a

Emma guided Julia into the bathroom, shutting the door gently behind them. The girl looked uneasy, her usual sass replaced by vulnerability. She fiddled with the hem of her oversized t-shirt, avoiding Emma’s gaze.“I woke up and there was... blood,” Julia whispered, her cheeks flushed. “I didn’t know what to do.”Emma crouched to her level, her voice calm and reassuring. “It’s okay, Julia. This is completely normal. It just means you’re growing up.”Julia frowned, her tough exterior crumbling. “I don’t feel normal. I feel gross.”Emma smiled softly, brushing a strand of Julia’s hair from her face. “Trust me, every girl feels that way at first. But it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s part of being a woman.”Julia hesitated, glancing at Emma uncertainly. “You’re not going to tell him, are you?”Emma raised an eyebrow. “Your dad? No, this is just between us unless you want him to know. It’s your choice.”Julia let out a small sigh of relief. “Good. I’d rather die than have him find out.”
