THE VISIT

(Serena's POV)

The prison smelled like bleach and broken dreams. The scent hit me as soon as I walked through the heavy metal doors.

I walked through the metal detectors, my heels clicking against the polished concrete floor. The sound echoed off the walls like gunshots. The baby kicked restlessly in my womb, as if sensing the tension that radiated from every pore of my body.

"Mrs. Vaughn?" A guard approached me. His uniform was pressed and clean. His badge read "Martinez." "This way, please."

He led me through a maze of corridors painted institutional green. The color reminded me of hospitals and morgues. Places where people went to die.

"The VIP wing," he explained as we walked. His voice was respectful. "Your... arrangement... has been very generous to the city."

I nodded but didn't speak. Money talked, even in prison. Especially in prison.

The visiting room was nicer than I'd expected. Actual chairs instead of metal stools. A table with a clean surface. Windows that actu

THE CALL FROM THE PAST(Damien's POV)I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, but my phone buzzed.I sat up immediately, my heart pounding. Was it Rufus already? Had he found something about Michelle so quickly? But when I looked at the screen, the number that appeared made my breath catch in my throat.I knew that number. I had dialed it a thousand times. I had saved it, deleted it, and saved it again more times than I could count.Serena.Serena was calling me.My hands shook as I stared at the screen. The phone buzzed again. Why was she calling me at two in the morning? Was something wrong with Isabella? Was my daughter hurt?Terror gripped my chest as I swiped to answer. "Serena? Is Isabella okay? What happened?"There was a brief pause. Then Serena's voice came through, tight and controlled. "Isabella is fine. She's sleeping."I let out a breath I did not know I was holding. "Then why are you calling me at this hour?""Because I need to talk to you about something urgent," Serena sa

THE BREAKING POINT(Damien's POV)“If he doesn't leave this premises, I will have him assassinated."The words hung in the air between Eleanor and me. I watched as the color drained from her face. For once in her life, Eleanor Blackwood looked genuinely shaken."You've lost your mind," she said finally. Her voice was quieter now."Have I?" I asked. "Or have I finally learned what it takes to survive in this family?"Eleanor stared at me for a long moment. Then, without another word, she turned and walked out of my study. I heard her footsteps echoing down the hallway, growing fainter and fainter until they disappeared entirely.I sank into my desk chair, suddenly exhausted. The adrenaline that had fueled my confrontation with Eleanor was draining away, leaving me hollow and shaking.Had I really just threatened to have someone killed? Had those words really come out of my mouth?I put my head in my hands. I did not recognize myself anymore. The man I used to be, the man who believed i

THE TRUTH UNFOLDS(Serena's POV)I stood frozen, staring at my daughter clinging to Lysander's legs. The words she had just spoken echoed in my mind like a cruel joke."Will you be my daddy and make mummy not cry again?"Tears started streaming down my face. I could not stop them. They came in hot, silent rivers, blurring my vision. My little girl. My innocent, beautiful little girl who just wanted her mother to be happy. Who just wanted a father figure in her life.Isabella looked at me with concern. "Mama? Why are you crying more?"I could not answer. My throat was closed tight with emotion.Lysander knelt down slowly, bringing himself to Isabella's eye level. His own eyes were glistening with tears. "Isabella," he said softly. "Your mama is crying because she's had a very hard day. Not because of you.""But you can make her happy, right?" Isabella asked hopefully. "You made her smile before. Lots of times."Lysander looked up at me. The pain and longing in his eyes was so raw, so g

THE REVELATION(Serena's POV)Elena stared at Helena Thorne for a long moment. The air in my small apartment felt thick and suffocating. These two women knew each other. But how?"Elena," I said again, my voice shaking. "How do you know her?"Helena answered before Elena could. "I adopted Elena many years ago. When she was just a child."I felt the world tilt beneath my feet. "What?"Elena finally spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's true, Serena. Helena is... she's the one who saved me from the orphanage.""Orphanage?" I repeated stupidly. Nothing was making sense. "But your parents...""Are not my real parents," Elena said, tears now flowing freely down her face. "I'm sorry I never told you. I was... I was ashamed."Helena moved further into the room, her elegant dress rustling softly. "It was during one of my world tours. It was twenty years ago. I visited an orphanage in San Francisco as part of a charity event. I was just going through the motions, really. Shaking han

THE CONFRONTATION(Damien's POV)"Michelle?" I said urgently into the phone. "Michelle, is that you? What's wrong? Where are you?"The sobbing continued. I could hear her trying to speak through the tears, but the words would not come out clearly. My heart was racing.Something was terribly wrong."Michelle, please, talk to me. Are you safe? Did something happen?""Damien, I..." Her voice broke again. "I can't... I can't...""Can't do what? Michelle, where are you? Are you on the plane?""Damien, I'm so scared..." She said. And then, the line went dead."Michelle? Michelle!" I shouted into the phone. But there was only silence. The call had been cut off.I stared at the screen in horror. My hands were shaking so badly I almost dropped the phone. I tried to call the number back, but it would not connect. It just rang and rang before going to an automated message saying the number was not available. Why would Michelle be crying? What had happened? Was she in danger? My mind raced throug

THE CALL(Damien's POV)The gala was a masterpiece of fake smiles and empty conversations. I stood beside Eleanor as a perfect statue in a tailored tuxedo. I shook hands. I accepted congratulations for the new hospital wing. I gave my speech without stumbling over my words. No one could see the turmoil inside me. No one could see that with every passing minute, a plane was getting closer to taking off. A plane carrying a woman and the ghost of my child away from me forever.Eleanor watched me like a hawk. Her eyes never left me for long. She was making sure I performed my part. She was making sure the Blackwood heir did not crack. When the clock struck eleven, a strange calm settled over me. It was almost over. In one hour, it would be midnight. Michelle would be gone. The problem would be erased. We returned to the mansion just before midnight. The silence of the grand house was a welcome relief after the noise of the gala."Acceptable," Eleanor said as we stood in the foyer. It was
