"Stop joking, Vivian." Rebecca's smile stayed perfectly in place, but her eyes had gone winter-cold. "If you actually had a recording, you'd have released it years ago. You wouldn't have waited until now." She lifted her chin, steady again, recalibrating. "Let go of me, or I'm calling security."

Vivian raised an eyebrow.

Released her chin.

And smiled. "Go ahead."

The confidence did it.

Rebecca had been eighty percent certain the recording was a bluff. Now she was sixty. Now fifty.

Because that was the thing about Vivian Rong, she had never once in her life bluffed without something to back it up. And the particular quality of her smile right now, unhurried and faintly amused, was not the smile of someone running a gamble.

Rebecca's hand stayed at her side.

Vivian watched the calculation play out behind her eyes and felt something loosen in her chest, not quite satisfaction, but close enough.

She leaned in one last time, fingers pressing just slightly harder against Rebecca's jaw.

"I didn't come here just to return what you gave me yesterday," she said quietly. "I came to tell you something. I'm back, Rebecca. I'm back." Her voice dropped to something soft and absolute. "And I'm going to peel back every pretty layer you've built over the last five years, one by one, and show everyone exactly what's underneath. Everything you took from me, I'm taking it back. Every single piece. With interest."

Something moved through Rebecca's expression. A flicker she couldn't entirely suppress, not quite fear, but something adjacent to it.

"I don't know what you're talking about," she said stiffly.

Vivian looked at her for a long moment. Then her expression shifted, lighter suddenly, almost casual, the way it did when she was about to say something that would land exactly where she intended it to.

"One more thing." She tilted her head, studying Rebecca's face with an expression of mild, genuine interest. "Your forehead's been dark for weeks, hasn't it? And your love line" She clicked her tongue softly. "Not looking good. Someone's been watering the grass on your side of the fence, Rebecca. I'd keep an eye on that."

Rebecca's carefully maintained composure cracked at the edges. "Daniel is not that kind of person"

Vivian laughed, light, unbothered, not unkind.

She didn't confirm it. Didn't deny it. Just let the words sit in the air between them like smoke.

If Sebastian Stonewell wasn't that kind of person, he wouldn't have been doing exactly that in the Rong family guest bathroom with Rebecca while Vivian's birthday party was happening one floor below.

Men like that didn't change. They just found new directions.

She'd said enough. Whether Rebecca believed her or not was Rebecca's problem, not hers.

Vivian's gaze drifted sideways, just briefly and she said, almost as an afterthought, "The first two slaps were interest."

She met Rebecca's eyes.

"This is the principal."

"What"

Rebecca's ankle turned.

One moment she was standing, and the next she was pitching sideways, arms out, balance gone, tumbling off the curb and into the road with a sharp cry. A black sedan locked up its brakes and screeched to a stop two meters short of her, close enough that the heat of the engine was a presence in the air.

The color left Rebecca's face completely.

"Ah!"

The paparazzi, who had been hovering on the edges of the scene trying to make sense of what they were witnessing, came surging back to life. Shutters fired. Cameras swung. Every lens in a twenty-foot radius found Rebecca Rong sitting in the road, designer dress crumpled, expression stripped of every carefully applied layer.

In the strobe of the flashbulbs, Vivian crouched down to eye level.

Unhurried. Composed. Looking at Rebecca the way you'd look at something you'd already decided the outcome of.

"We understand each other now, don't we." It wasn't a question. Her voice was low and even, each word placed with deliberate weight. "I'm back. And from this point forward, every move you make against me, I will return it. Doubled. Without hesitation." A pause. "Don't test me."

Rebecca said nothing.

The stopped car sat behind her, hazard lights blinking. Camera flashes burned white across her vision. Her bodyguards came crashing through the crowd, her assistant right behind them, all of them rushing to pull her up and shield her from the lenses.

Rebecca let them. Jaw tight. Fists clenched at her sides.

She watched Vivian straighten up, turn her back, and walk away through the parting crowd, calm, unhurried, head up, as though she'd simply completed an errand.

Vivian Rong.

Rebecca's hands shook as her assistant draped a jacket over her shoulders.

She would wait. She would be ready.

Vivian hadn't won anything yet.

---

Across the street, in the open courtyard of the Midtown shopping plaza, a small figure in a yellow checked shirt had just spotted something through the crowd.

A familiar silhouette. A particular way of walking, head up, steps unhurried, the easy confidence of someone who belonged wherever she went.

The little boy's eyes went wide.

His feet were already moving before his brain caught up, short legs pumping, arms swinging, weaving through a forest of adult knees with single-minded, joyful determination.

Mom.

It's Mom!

Vivian didn't waste another second. She positioned herself beside the bed, steadied her breathing, and began.Acupuncture was never simple work. With a condition as rare and specific as Rosie's, the margin for error was essentially zero, every needle placement demanded a precision that left no room for distraction, no room for anything except the task in front of her. Vivian's world narrowed to the sleeping child and the work of her hands, moving with the quiet certainty of someone who had done this so many times it had become its own language. The minutes accumulated.Somewhere past the first hour, a fine sheen of perspiration appeared along her hairline. She didn't notice it. She noticed only Rosie, the quality of her breathing, the subtle shifts of color in her face, the gradual, unmistakable bloom of warmth returning to her cheeks as the session progressed. Finally, she withdrew the last needle.Stepped back.Exhaled.Rosie's face, slack and deeply asleep, had more color in it tha

Vivian pressed her lips to Rosie's soft cheek and raised her right hand with solemn ceremony."Never," she said firmly. "I have never once thought about leaving you. Every single day this week I've been figuring out how to get to you." She pulled back just enough to look at the small, tear-streaked face. "And haven't I come? I'm here, aren't I?"Rosie considered this from within the circle of her arms, sniffling quietly. The familiar warmth of his mother's embrace, the particular scent of her, clean and natural and entirely safe, worked its way through the week's worth of accumulated worry and loneliness and slowly, gradually, began to loosen the knot in the small chest. His breathing evened out.His rigid little shoulders dropped by degrees."Mom." His voice was very small now. "I want to go home."There was a beautiful room here, with Little Prince murals and star-painted ceilings and a grandmother who would move mountains for him. There was a father now, tall and quiet, who had tie

The small figure on the bed stirred at the sound of their voices."Rosie, are you asleep?"The moment Vivian said the name, the little figure exploded off the mattress like a spring that had been compressed for exactly one week too long. She spun around, sat up straight, and fixed two enormous, perfectly round eyes directly on Vivian's face.Mom!!He was the most beautiful thing Vivian had seen in seven days.Rosie in his tiger pajamas, hair slightly mussed from lying down, little face flushed and stunned and blazing with recognition, like a tiny prince from a storybook who had just spotted the one person he'd been searching for across the entire kingdom.Vivian's lips curved into the widest, most helpless smile she'd worn in a week. She tilted her head and asked softly, "Can I call you Rosie?"MomEvery instinct in Rosie's small body launched her forward, arms already reaching, heart already there. And then his eyes landed on the tall figure standing beside Vivian.he stopped.Plante

Victoria's smile widened as she beckoned Vivian forward with the warmth of a woman who had been waiting for exactly this kind of moment for years."Come in, come in, don't be shy, sweetheart. Come sit down." She patted the cushion beside her on the sofa. "I'll have someone bring fruit. What do you like? We have everything, just say the word.""Oh.. I" Vivian hadn't braced for this level of enthusiasm. She threw a sideways glance at the man beside her that said, quite clearly, help.Ethan received the distress signal and stepped smoothly forward."Mom." His voice was easy, unhurried. "Vivian is a traditional medicine practitioner. She studied acupuncture abroad, she's highly experienced in the field. I brought her here to take a look at Rosie. A TCM perspective might offer something the other specialists haven't." He glanced toward the staircase. "Where is he?"The effect on Victoria was immediate. The effusive hostess energy shifted, still warm, but now sharpened with genuine focus, t

The Hartwell Family Estate.Rosie had been quiet ever since they got home. He'd gone straight to his room the moment they walked through the door, no requests for snacks, no cartoons, no asking Grandma to read to him. Just small, careful footsteps up the stairs and the soft click of his bedroom door. The family's longtime housekeeper, Nanny Chen, watched the little figure disappear down the hallway and turned to Victoria with a worried crease between her brows."Ma'am, what happened? The young master seems so down. He was perfectly happy this morning."Victoria sighed, settling onto the sitting room sofa with the weight of someone who had been turning the same question over in her mind for the past hour. "I honestly don't know. One moment we were looking at clothes, he was laughing and pointing at everything, and then suddenly he was gone. Bolted out of the boutique like something had caught fire." She shook her head. "By the time I caught up to him outside, he'd already stopped. Just

The pressure of his lips against hers wasn't content with just grazing the surface, it wanted more, moving with a quiet insistence that sent a sudden flash of memory tearing through Vivian's mind. A hotel room. Darkness. Two people tangled together in desperation. She shoved him back."Mr. Hartwell." Her voice came out steadier than she felt. "What do you think you're doing?"There was nowhere to retreat. Her back was already against the door, and he hadn't moved far, just enough. His cologne drifted into the space between them, warm and clean and entirely too present to ignore.Ethan looked down at her. Her face was flushed, her breathing uneven, her eyes very wide and very direct. He was certain of one thing, the splitting tension that had been building behind his temples since morning had vanished the exact moment his lips touched hers.Gone. Completely. He held her gaze and said, with perfect composure, "If I told you I mistook you for someone else, would you believe me?"The ques
