Chapter 4: The First Night

last update publish date: 2026-03-05 21:31:04

The penthouse felt colder after the ceremony.

Emily stood in the vast living room, still wearing the ivory silk dress, arms wrapped around herself as if the fabric could shield her from the silence. The rain had picked up again, drumming against the floor-to-ceiling windows like impatient fingers. Alexander had disappeared into his study the moment they returned—no explanation, no goodbye kiss for the cameras that had followed them to the elevator.

She was alone. Married. And utterly lost.

She kicked off her heels, the soft click of them hitting the marble echoing too loudly. Barefoot, she padded toward the kitchen—sleek black granite, stainless steel everything, not a single fingerprint in sight. She opened the fridge out of habit more than hunger. Inside: bottled water, a few containers of prepped meals labeled by a private chef, a bottle of champagne still sealed. No leftovers. No comfort food. Nothing that said home.

She closed the door harder than necessary.

Her phone buzzed on the counter. A message from her brother, Ethan—the only family she had left.

Saw the headlines. You married ALEXANDER KNIGHT?? Call me. Now.

Emily stared at the screen. She hadn’t told anyone. Not Ethan, not her old coworkers, not even the landlord when she’d given notice on the apartment. How had the press found out so fast?

Another buzz. This time a news alert.

Billionaire Bachelor No More: Alexander Knight Weds in Secret City Hall Ceremony

A grainy photo accompanied it—Alexander guiding her into the car, his hand possessive at her waist, her face half-turned away. She looked composed. Regal, even. No one would guess her heart had been hammering so hard she thought it might crack a rib.

She powered the phone off and set it face-down.

The study door opened down the hall.

Alexander emerged, tie loosened, top button undone. He looked tired—not the polished exhaustion of a long day, but something deeper. Haunted.

He stopped when he saw her standing there in the dress, barefoot, hair starting to slip from its chignon.

“You’re still wearing it,” he said.

“I didn’t know where to put it.” Her voice came out smaller than she intended. “Or… what to do next.”

He crossed the room slowly, like he was approaching something fragile. When he reached her, he stopped a foot away.

“You don’t have to do anything tonight,” he said quietly. “You can change. Sleep. Pretend this didn’t happen until morning.”

Emily looked up at him. “Is that what you’re going to do? Pretend?”

His gaze darkened. “I don’t have that luxury.”

He reached past her, opened a cabinet she hadn’t noticed, and pulled out two crystal glasses and the same bottle of scotch he’d poured from the night before. He poured two fingers into each, then slid one toward her.

“Drink,” he said. Not a command. Closer to a plea.

This time, she didn’t refuse.

The liquor burned going down—smooth, smoky, expensive. It settled in her chest like a small fire.

Alexander leaned against the counter, glass in hand, studying her.

“Ask,” he said.

Emily blinked. “What?”

“You’ve been holding questions since the hallway at City Hall. Ask them.”

She took another sip for courage. “Your first fiancée. The one who… died. What was her name?”

A muscle flexed in his jaw. “Lila.”

“Lila,” Emily repeated softly. The name felt like a bruise. “How long were you together?”

“Four years. Engaged for two.” He stared into his glass. “She wanted children. A quieter life. I told her I couldn’t give her either. Not yet. The company was everything. She stayed anyway. Until she didn’t.”

Emily’s throat tightened. “You said you drove her away.”

“I did.” His voice was rough. “I worked late. I canceled plans. I let her believe she came second. One night she left after another fight. Took my car—said she needed air. The roads were wet. A truck crossed the median. She never made it home.”

Silence fell again, heavier this time.

Emily set her glass down. “I’m sorry.”

He looked at her then—really looked. “Don’t be. You didn’t kill her.”

“But you blame yourself.”

“Every day.”

Emily stepped closer without thinking. “Is that why you chose a contract marriage? Because real love… hurts too much?”

Alexander’s eyes searched hers. “I chose a contract because it’s clean. No expectations. No heartbreak. No one gets destroyed.”

“And yet here we are,” she whispered. “Married. Living together. Pretending.”

He exhaled slowly. “Pretending is safer.”

“Is it?”

She didn’t know why she said it. Maybe the scotch. Maybe the exhaustion. Maybe the way he was looking at her—like she was the first person in years who hadn’t run from his truth.

Alexander set his glass aside. His hand lifted, hesitated, then cupped the side of her face. His thumb brushed her cheekbone—gentle, almost careful.

“You’re shaking,” he murmured.

“I’m terrified,” she admitted.

“Of me?”

“Of everything.” Her voice cracked. “Of this dress. Of the rings. Of Victoria’s smile. Of the way you look at me sometimes like you’re waiting for me to disappear.”

His thumb stilled.

“I don’t want you to disappear,” he said quietly.

“Then stop pushing me away.”

The words hung between them.

For a heartbeat, neither moved.

Then Alexander leaned down—slowly, giving her every chance to pull back.

Emily didn’t.

His lips brushed hers.

Not the perfunctory kiss from City Hall.

This was different.

Soft at first. Tentative. Like he was testing if she would shatter.

When she didn’t, he deepened it—slow, deliberate, one hand sliding to the nape of her neck, the other settling at her waist. Heat bloomed where he touched her. The taste of scotch mingled with something uniquely him—dark, addictive.

Emily’s hands found his chest, fingers curling into his shirt. She kissed him back—hesitant, then hungry. All the fear, the anger, the loneliness of the past few days poured into that single moment.

When they finally broke apart, both breathing hard, foreheads resting together.

Alexander’s voice was rough. “This wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Emily swallowed. “I know.”

He pulled back just enough to look at her. His eyes were stormy—want, guilt, something deeper warring inside.

“Go to bed, Emily,” he said hoarsely. “Before I forget why this is temporary.”

She searched his face. “And if I don’t want to forget?”

His jaw clenched. “Then you’re playing a dangerous game.”

She stepped back, heart pounding.

“I thnk I already am.”

She turned and walked toward the bedroom, feeling his gaze on her back the entire way.

At the doorway, she paused.

“Alexander?”

He hadn’t moved. “Yes?”

“Don’t sleep on the couch tonight.”

A long silence.

Then, quietly: “I won’t.”

She closed the door behind her.

Leaned against it.

Touched her lips where his had been.

And wondered how long it would take for this contract to burn them both alive.

Because something had shifted tonight.

And there was no going back.
