Chapter 3

And guess what, it ranged out. She expected that, she tried again and this time, someone answered that call on the third ring.

“Hello?” She asked, carefully clutching her phone tightly. “Am I speaking with Mr lightwood?”

“No, but with his receptionist. How May I help you today?” A female voice answered politely and at this, Emma found it in herself to calm down a little bit. She just got tensed for no good reason.

“I am Emma Newton, I was asked to call this number” she replied

“Oh! Yeah, actually I have been anticipating your call since yesterday, Miss Emma. The boss would like to meet with you if that is alright” she asked. Why would he want to meet someone like her? She has nothing to offer him nor does he hold anything that belongs to her which he wants to return, so why?

“Yeah” she answered back

“Great then, I will send a car to pick you by 5pm this evening. Is that okay?”

“Yeah it is” and she hung up. Glancing at the wall clock that hangs opposite her, she had only two hours to prepare herself. But why was she even thinking about preparing herself? She doesn’t know him and has never seen so why does she needs to appear over dressed before him? She shrugged the thought out of her head and occupied herself with her phone till she heard a car honk and came out. She stood there admiring the car that was parked right in front of her. It was a black Rolls Royce with tinted windows and silver-gray tyres. “Wow what a wonderful beauty” she thought.

“Hello ma’am,” the chauffeur said, stepping out of the car in a black leather suit with his cap in his hand. He stood in front of her with a welcoming smile and introduced himself as the chauffeur that would attend to her that evening.

“Emma Newton” she said, extending her hand for a handshake and he took it feeling quite uncomfortable about it.

“Shall we?” He asked and with a nod of her head he went to open the backseat door for her but she beat him to it.

“That isn’t necessary Mr Smith, thank you so much” and she slipped in admiring the interior of the car. She was being offered a bottle of wine but she politely declined. She can't just accept anything from a total stranger she hasn’t even met before. What if she accepts the wine she was being offered too and then after taking, she gets intoxicated and they take advantage of her? What then? No, she can’t accept anything even though it is as simple as bottled water. After the drive of about forty minutes, they finally came to stop in front of what seemed to be like a mansion. “Is this the place?” She couldn’t help but ask. How can he invite her to a place like this? She can’t even say she was going back before even if she does, she doesn’t know the way. Swallowing hard, she climbed down from the car and the chauffeur escorted her to a lobby where she was assigned a seat before someone came for her. She quietly sat down feeding her eyes the new environment she found herself in. What an amazing place. The desk that firmly stood in front of her was what she assumed to be occupied by a receptionist and to her suspicion, a young female with short trimmed red hair stood by her and smiled broadly before saying,

“I am the receptionist you spoke to earlier today, my name is Queen.” She introduced herself, extending her hand for a shake.

“Emma Newton” she answered back.

“If you don’t mind, shall we go see him?” Queen asked calmly, tugging at the strands of hair that fell on her face. She had to admit, Queen was a really good looking young lady, maybe in her mid twenties and petite body, olive skinned and polite.

“Yeah, let’s go” she said. By the time they arrived at his office, the once calm and collected Emma started sweating in her palms and her breathing became ragged out of nervousness. Queen knocked on the door twice and pushed it open to reveal what looked like a whole ballroom. The amount of space that was available in this room would be equivalent to her family’s home completely if not more. It was a gigantic office room that was neatly organized and air freshener with cinnamon scent. They walked further into the office and there he stood facing the window with his back to them.

“Excuse me sir, your quest has arrived” Queen said before bowing slightly and leaving. He took his time staring at the window before finally turning back to face her.

“Have a seat” he said strictly sitting on his chair. As if her legs were under his control, she sat down almost immediately fidgeting with her nails. She was so nervous that she couldn’t even breathe properly and the more he stared at her, the more she felt like disappearing. “Miss Newton, I bet you already know who I am, but I will still introduce myself to you out of courtesy” he said in a cold voice. “I am Alex lightwood, the owner of Pearl Mobile” he said proudly. But that wasn’t what she wanted to hear, she wanted to know why she was there in the first place.

“Emma Newton” she said curtly. “May I know why I am here please?” She asked and his eyes widened momentarily. He wasn’t expecting that. At the very least, he expected her to be hyper active for being in the same place as him but seeing how she kept her cool only meant one thing. She doesn’t know him. And, to be honest, he felt…offended? Why? Maybe because he was so used to people falling at his feet for just one selfie

I am assuming you do not know who I am right?” He asked about adjusting his seating position. But nonetheless, he felt offended.

“Yes, I do not,” she answered, looking at him. Even though her heart was about to break out of its rib cage, she managed to keep a steady voice and composed body all through their meeting.

“That isn’t a problem,” he said. “I went through the resume you left at the cafe yesterday and I have to say, I’m impressed.” What? Shouldn’t he apologize to her by now? Instead, he is saying what? He is impressed? Like what the hell? Who does that? She scrunched up her nose in annoyance and glared at him.

“That isn’t so nice Mr Lightwood, I am so disappointed. Is that the reason you called me here today? Tell me that you are impressed?” She asked. Why would he do that to her? Why would he go through her things in her absence? She felt so disrespected and glared at him the more. Staring back at her, he burst into the fits of laughter making her look more stupid.

“You sure are a feisty one Emma, I like that.” He smirked. “If you want me to apologize, then you have come to the wrong place. I can’t and won’t do that, because I have no reason to” he declared. What the hell? He must be out of his mind.

“What do you want?” Her voice sounded angry. She felt like squeezing out his neck and feeding it to the barking dog behind her apartment. One of the disadvantages of staying there.

“I called you here for a job offer” he concluded with an aura of intimidation. What kind of job offer was he talking about?

“What kind of job offer are you talking about?” A sickening feeling was brewing in the pit of her stomach. She was scared.
