LOGINRael's Pov
I opened my eyes and knew right away something was really wrong. This wasn't my room. The ceiling was plain white and I didn't recognize it at all. The bed under me felt stiff and uncomfortable like no one had slept there for a long time. I sat up slowly and my whole body hurt, my muscles ached and my joints felt like they were grinding together. There was a dull pain behind my eyes that just wouldn't go away. I looked around the small room but didn't recognize anything. The walls were empty except for one small painting of a forest. The furniture was simple and old. There was a dresser in the corner and just one chair by the window. That was it, i had no personal stuff, no warmth. Just a guest room or something for visitors. Where was my stuff? I got up on shaky legs and went to the dresser. I opened all the drawers, it was empty, there was nothing. Then I checked the small closet next to the door. There was just a plain dress and some basic shoes on the floor, none of it was mine. My throat got tight and panic started to build in my chest. Where was everything? Where were my clothes and my jewelry? What about the little box of letters my mom wrote me before she died? Where was the blue shawl Corvin gave me on our bonding day? The door opened and I spun around. A middle-aged woman with kind eyes and gray hair walked in holding a tray with water and bread. She wore simple pack healer clothes, when she saw I was awake she smiled softly. "Luna Rael," she said, then quickly fixed herself. "I mean Rael. You're awake, that's good. You need to eat something." "Where are my things?" I asked. My voice was rough and cracked because I hadn't used it in a while. Her smile got smaller and she put the tray down on the small table by the bed. "I don't know about your stuff. I was only told to check on your health." "Who are you?" "I'm Doctor Lydia . I've been the pack doctor for fifteen years." I didn't know her name, but I wasn't surprised. A lot had changed in five years. "Sit down please," she said, pointing to the bed. "I need to check you." I didn't want to, but my legs shook so much I had no choice. I sat down hard, and she came closer with her healer bag. "May I?" she asked, motioning to my arms. I nodded. She rolled up the sleeves of my thin nightgown. Her eyes got big when she saw my wrists, i knew what she was looking at. The scars were thick and ugly, wrapped around my wrists like silver bracelets that would never come off. The scars from chains that had dug into my skin every day for so long. "These are old," she said quietly. Her voice sounded kind of scared. "Silver burns?" "Yes." She touched them lightly and I jumped even though it didn't hurt anymore. The pain was long gone but the memories were still fresh and sharp. "There are more," I said. "All over me." She looked at me with pity in her eyes. I hated that. I didn't want anyone's pity. "May I see?" I stood up and pulled the nightgown off without caring if I was modest anymore. What did it even matter now? She was a healer, she had seen everything before. I stood there naked and let her look. I heard her sharp breath. The scars covered me like a map of pain. Long thin lines from whips across my back. Round burn marks on my sides and stomach from hot metal. Deep cuts on my ankles just like the ones on my wrists and other marks too. Marks I didn't want to think about. "Goddess above," Doctor Lydia whispered. She put her hand to her mouth. "What did they do to you?" "Does it matter?" I said. "Rael, I need to know what happened so I can help you better." "You can't help me," I said and put my nightgown back on. "No one can." "Please. Just tell me something. Were you kept captive? Were you hurt?" I sat down again and stared at the wall. "Yes." "For how long?" "Five years." She was quiet for a long time and then sat down next to me on the bed. "You are very weak. You don't have enough food in you and your body is hurt from everything. You need rest, good food, and time to get better." "I'm fine." "You're not," she said strongly. "You collapsed yesterday in front of the whole pack. You were out for a whole day and night. Your body is shutting down because it has been through so much." I didn't say anything. "Will you tell me who did this?" "No." "Where have you been?" "No." "Will you tell me anything at all?" "No." Doctor Lydia sighed and stood up. "Okay. I can't make you talk. But I'm here if you need me. I'll check on you again tomorrow." She walked to the door, then stopped and looked back at me. "Your husband has been sitting outside your room since you woke. He only left for important pack things. He's very worried." My jaw tightened and anger boiled in my throat. "Tell him to go away." "Rael, he cares about you." "Tell him to go away," I said again, my voice cold and hard. "I don't want to see him." She looked like she wanted to say more but just nodded and left. I sat on that uncomfortable bed, in that strange room, feeling so heavy. Five years. Five years of pain and darkness and torture. Five years of calling for my mate and he never came. Five years of losing everything. Now I was back and everything was different. No room of my own.Rael's Pov The next morning I woke up early and started paying much closer attention to everything around me. If I was going to escape during this tour I needed every piece of information I could gather.I positioned myself near my door where I could hear guards talking in the hallway outside. They changed shifts every four hours and they always spent a few minutes chatting before the new guards took over."Did you hear about the tour?" one guard said."Yeah. The prince is taking his prisoner around the kingdom. Seems like a waste of time and resources.""He thinks showing her the kingdom will make her accept him. Like she'll see all this wealth and power and forget she was kidnapped.""Women are strange creatures. Maybe it'll work.""Or maybe she'll try to escape again and we'll have to chase her down through half the kingdom.""That's why we're going with them. Full security detail. Twenty guards plus the prince himself. She won't get ten feet before we catch her."Twenty guards. T
Rael’s PovI was in my room the morning before the tour when someone knocked on the door. It wasn't Mira's usual knock, thhis one was quick and nervous. Three short taps followed by two longer ones."Come in," I called.A young servant girl entered. She couldn't have been more than sixteen. Her hands shook as she set down fresh linens on the bed and her eyes kept darting to the door like she expected guards to burst in."Are you alright?" I asked quietly. She glanced at the door one more time then moved closer and whispered so softly I had to strain to hear. "I have a message for you.""A message? From who?""From people outside the palace. People who know about you, people who want to help."My heart started pounding. "What people? What are you talking about?""There are people here who work against the prince. Who help prisoners when they can. We've been watching you since you arrived trying to find a safe way to contact you.""Why would you risk that? If Orion finds out he'll kill
Rael’s PovBy evening I had made my decision. I wouldn't be a pawn anymore in anyone's game. I wouldn't sit here waiting for things to happen to me, I would take control of my own fate for the first time in my life. The first step was gathering information. I needed to know everything about the palace and the kingdom and Orion's routines. Knowledge was power and right now I had very little of either.Mira came to bring dinner and I stopped her before she could leave. "Can I ask you something?""Of course.""You've been here for five years, you tried to escape once, you must know things about this place and how it works. You must know about people who run it and the routines they follow."She looked nervous. "Some things. Why?""Because I need your help. I need to know everything you know about this palace, every weakness, every opportunity. Every person who might be sympathetic to prisoners.""I can't help you escape. If they catch me helping you they'll kill me. They'll torture me f
Rael’s PovThe next morning I woke up feeling empty. Like all the anger and pain from yesterday had burned through me completely and left nothing behind, just a hollow shell where a person used to be.I lay in bed staring at the ceiling unable to move or think or feel anything at all. Everything felt distant and unreal like I was watching my life happen to someone else.Mira came with breakfast but I didn't touch it. She tried to talk to me but I didn't respond, i couldn't respond. I just stayed there frozen and unable to function. This happened sometimes after the torture. Days where I couldn't do anything, where the trauma overwhelmed everything else and shut me down completely. I thought I was past that, thought I had healed enough that it wouldn't happen anymore. The door opened and I heard footsteps but I didn't turn to look. I didn't care who it was or what they wanted. Nothing mattered anymore."Rael?" It was Orion. "Are you alright?"I didn't answer. I couldn't find the energy
Rael’s PovI spent the next day reading through the letters over and over. Each time I found new details that made everything worse, small things I had missed before that painted a clearer picture of what really happened.Nyra had been writing to Orion's people for months before my capture, planning and s cheming. Working out every detail of how to get rid of me and in her letters she mentioned Corvin constantly. Not as my husband but as someone else, someone more to her."Corvin agrees this is the best solution," one letter said. "He knows she stands in the way of what we want."Another letter was even more direct. "Once she's gone we can finally be together properly, no more hiding or pretending."They had been having an affair. Before my capture. Maybe even before I got pregnant, all that time I thought Corvin loved me he was sleeping with my cousin behind my back. The realization hit me like a physical blow, i felt sick. My stomach twisted and I thought I might throw up. Everythin
Rael’s PovAfter Orion's confession I was still reeling. Everything I thought I knew was wrong. He didn't want me, he didn't feel a mate bond. He was just using me as a weapon against Eryx.It was worse than I imagined. At least if he loved me there would be some explanation for his behavior but this was just pure cruelty.I was lying on the bed staring at the ceiling when Orion came in again, he had been visiting every day now that he didn't have to pretend to be kind."I have something else to tell you," he said. "Something you deserve to know.""What now? What else could you possibly reveal?""The truth about how you came to be captured five years ago. About who really betrayed you."I sat up. "What are you talking about?""You think you were randomly targeted. That Lycans just happened to attack your home that night but that's not what happened.""Then what did happen?""You were given to us as tribute. A sacrifice to save Direlune from Lycan attacks."My blood went cold. "What?"
