AUDREY'S POV
My heart was clenched tight inside my chest as I tried so desperately to breathe just like Claire told me to but it was almost impossible. My vision was getting blurry and even Claire's voice was fading away. There was a banging on the door but I couldn't reach for the lock to push it open. “AUDREY! Are you gonna leave Aiden here alone because of a dumb man!?” Claire's voice suddenly cut through my brain and I realized she was right. Was I just gonna let myself wallow away because of Lucas? “Breathe, darling. You can do this!” She said reassuringly and I clutched the phone tightly as I forced myself to breathe, thinking of nothing but Aiden. My son needs me. I can't give up now. “I'm okay… I'm okay Claire.” I said after multiple attempts of breathing in and out and I heard her let out a sigh of relief. “What are you going to do now? You know what, I'm coming over there. I'll give him a damn piece of my mind!” She said in anger and I let out a soft chuckle as I sat up. “You can't do that. You'll get thrown out. I can handle myself.” “No you cannot, Rey. Tell me the truth, what's on your mind?” She asked in concern and I rolled my eyes at how easy it was for her to read me. “I don't know yet, Claire. I guess I have no choice but to face him and given how I ran out earlier, I might get fired.” I said as I stood up and opened the door, seeing no one outside the door or in the restroom. “Whatever happens, I'll be here with you okay? And if he tries anything stupid, just give me a call. I'll break his legs for you.” She threatened and I laughed as I nodded even though she couldn't see me. “Understood, ma'am,” I said as I looked at myself in the mirror and wiped my tears, fixing my clothes and my hair. “Good. Keep your chin up and don't let anyone treat you anyhow, I got your back darling.” She reassured me and I hummed in response as I hung up and took a deep breath before stepping out of the restroom and making my way back to the office. However, when I saw them all filing out of his office, I chickened out and hid behind the wall as I waited for them to go away first. My heart skipped a bit when I heard his footsteps come my way and I placed my hand over my mouth to stop myself from screaming. Just when I thought he would reach my side, I heard a lady's voice call out to him. “Babe? Where are you going?” I heard the lady say and a frown creased my brows as I peeked out to see him walk up to her and she laced her arms with his. Babe? “I thought I saw something there. I wanted to check it out. Let's go.” He replied as they walked away but before he turned the corner, he turned to glance at me, causing me to hide behind the wall again. He… he has a new girlfriend? He left me broken and returned after five years with a girlfriend? I couldn't cry so I started to laugh at how funny the situation was. An employee passing by saw me and looked at me like I was crazy. “Why are you here? The new CEO has called for a meeting with everybody. Let's go.” She said as she walked away and I followed behind her, my mind reeling with different thoughts. She opened the meeting room and walked in while I took a deep breath to steady myself before pushing the door open and walking in. My eyes met his in an instant and he raised a brow at me in amusement. I immediately looked away and went to take a seat beside Kendall who snickered when she saw me and turned to whisper to the person sitting beside her. Sure, I'll be the talk of the office in no time. Lucas cleared his throat as he stood up and started to address everyone, his voice still as mature and deep as it was five years ago. He hadn't changed. He was still the same handsome Lucas I had fallen in love with except… He didn't look at me the same way he used to. It was like… he never knew me at all. “Miss Audrey?” He called out, drawing me out of my thoughts and I stood up hastily as I responded to him. “Can you summarize everything I had just said in thirty seconds? Your time starts now.” He ordered and I started to panic. I wasn't listening all this while. Damn it, I might really get fired. “You weren't listening, were you?” He asked and I just stayed silent, my eyes trained on my shoes while everyone else snickered. “Remain standing. That should help you concentrate.” My hands balled into fists as he continued to speak but this time, I paid close attention to everything he said. This wasn't the Lucas I knew. “Now that we've gotten all of that into our heads, let's have a bit of an introduction, shall we? I'm Lucas Kent, your new CEO.” He said as everyone started to clap and he bowed slightly, taking a seat while the employee beside him stood up and introduced himself. Everyone introduced themselves but when it got to my turn, he suddenly said ‘skip’ making me turn to look at him in confusion. “Audrey Jackson, good at running from her job. I know you already.” He said bluntly as he motioned for Kendall to go next and I suddenly wished for the ground to open up and swallow me up. Kendall introduced herself sweetly and I almost rolled my eyes at how stupid she sounded. Everyone gave their introductions and then he stood up, gesturing for the lady beside him to stand up too as he held her hand. It was the lady who called him ‘babe’ earlier. “One last introduction. Everyone, this is Isabella Grey, my fiancee. She has an equal say in this office just like I do so please respect her just like you'd respect me. Let's give her a round of applause.” He explained and everyone burst into clapping while I just stood there frozen, my eyes fixed on the rings on their fingers. Fiancee? They're… engaged?Audrey's POVI bore our crisis within me to the very bone marrow of my body. This was not Michael's threat against me, this revolting conduct. We were suspended as a family, and whatever we stirred up by doing at each step now existed or perished in a smoldering schism.Lucas took me to a tiny room at the rear of the hall. "Stay here with Aiden," he instructed the guard, then turned to me. "Audrey, I have to go out and recon our perimeter. I need to know where Michael's guards are."I caught his arm, my vision clouding with tears. I nodded, my words trembling. "I know you will, Lucas. But I'm afraid."He held my face in his palms, his own face set in a determined expression with a bit of desperation. "I do know. I'm scared too. But our family—our love—is the only thing that makes me brave enough to fight for something. I won't let them destroy us."The guard shut the door on Lucas, and I was left in the tiny room with Aiden not moving. I bounced him on the floor, and tried to clear my
Audrey's POVI found myself thinking with every passing moment that every moment was going to be our final one. Lucas's promise in words—"Our love will live on"—lay inside me as we navigated the charred hallways of our secure compound. The safe room was our sanctuary, but now the danger loomed large over them, and I sensed it in the beating of my heart.Time crept by as the video feed flared into static. The quiet was a silence that could be felt, was heartbreaking. I rose to my feet, spinning with hope and fear. Was Lucas overpowered? Was he hurt? I couldn't lose him. I held Aiden close to me, murmuring soothing words in his ear while my own heart wrestled with breaking. And the screen flickered back to life. Lucas was on it, bruised but determined, our eyes meeting. "Audrey, we beat them back. I'm coming in to pick you up and Shawn. Wait and hold on and wait for my signal."Fear and relief warred through me. Hold fast to our love as our shield. Believe in it, Audrey. We will get thr
Audrey's POVThe madness of the previous night still ran in my veins as I stood on the windowsill, looking out into the rain-soaked city. Thesafe room was just as quiet now, warm so, as if in collective breath for what was to happen. The last hug Lucas had given me still clung around me, yet a shiver had gripped my heart—Michael's threat still hanging over us like a ghost.I tightened in my fist a crumpled picture of Aiden, my child's smiling face burned into memory of all I'd fought so long and hard for. My mind reeling with what Michael would attempt to do next. Each creak of the hallway, each sound off in the distance, had me cringing in terror. And yet, above all terror, the memory of Lucas's invincible promise—"Our love shall be our shield"—kept me from shattering. My phone buzzed in my hand, waking me. I glanced at the screen:"Time's running out. Your final choice is pending."My heart dropped. The message itself was calm and to the point, but the threat in it was not one I w
Audrey's POVThe storm outside stormed in time with our own inner tempest. I stood at the window of our safe room, the early morning light struggling to penetrate blackened skies. I trembled in my hands as I gazed out into the pounding rain, each drop a reminder that nothing was ever certain. I clutched my phone, dead screen blankly staring up at me, but the texts sent last night seared themselves into my brain. Michael's rage-sharpened threats, Lucas's passion-seared guarantees, the phrases of our argument the other day—those kept me captive, on tender hooks.Lucas burst in, his bulging eyes flashing with maniacal compulsion. "Audrey, we must leave — immediately!" he screamed, shaking me awake. Every step we took then was then a matter of racing against time—a frantic rush from the lethal schemes Michael had set in motion."Lucas, what did they do?" I shouted over the howl of the wind, my dry throat throbbing with lust and fear. He did not answer immediately. His eyes darted towards
Audrey's POVI still felt the aftershocks of our recent altercation, each thud of my heartbeat dialing into rebellion and fear. Night air outside our safe room enveloped me like a shroud as I sat at the rickety wooden chair, my head reeling with unanswered questions and residual hurt. My gaze was drawn to the partially open door, where there was uncertainty and danger, and the recollection of Lucas's burning promise still lingered in my heart.I clutched my phone, the message from Michael's goons seared into my mind: "The reckoning is close. Decide now, or lose everything." My own hands trembled as I fought to find leverage against the weight of his threat. Every passing second took an eternity, and I couldn't help but wonder when the fragile peace we worked so frantically to build would shatter at any moment.Lucas's voice broke my trance. "Audrey, we have to decide—now." His voice was commanding, weighted with the unyielding ferocity of his having endured too much to ever risk wishi
Audrey's POVI sat in the panic room, my pounding heart still shuddering at Michael's threat. The soundlessness of the security system was all I heard, but each ticking clock sent a message screaming through my ears. I held Lucas's hand, his sturdy heat propping me up against the storm of terror and hopelessness that wanted to consume me.I couldn't help but recall what he told us on our last visitation—his insanity vow to take care of Aiden no matter what, his desperation as he mouthed with tears streaming down his face, "I won't let him ruin our family." Even now that danger is closing in around us, his vow was my sole comfort. But deep inside, a secret turmoil brewed within me—a battle between the vision of a future to come and the eerie dread that Michael's final verdict would shatter it all. Afraid that no matter how much we care, this threat is going to tear us apart. Afraid to lose Aiden. to lose you." My voice splintered and seared with tears of mine. I swear to you, Audrey, w
ELLA'S POV“Hey, how are you feeling this morning?” Laila asked the moment I walked into the office. She had made it a routine to ask how I was feeling at least three times. I didn't know she had such a caring part attached to her, I only assumed she was all into pestering one's livelihood with boring tales of her movies.“Yeah I'm great” I said letting out a smile on my face, I sure wouldn't say otherwise. She was quite observant and I was sure she knew how the fuck I was feeling, she nodded in response and fixed her gaze on the pile of papers in front of her.“You know boss came out to work so early today she added” I blinked my eyes and nodded.“I came quite early, needed to put a thing or two together. But he was already on sit”“Oh nice” I said, ensuring I wouldn't say more than necessary.“I wonder if he slept at work,” she chuckled. We both stayed quiet for a while saying nothing to each other and all I could hear on intervals were heavy sighs from both I and Laila.“Sorry abou
Audrey's POVI couldn't shake that night—havoc, fear, and the hope in Lucas's eyes when he vowed to protect me and Aiden. And now, I'm standing before our deserted safehouse, every footstep resounding with what we could possibly lose. My hands still tremble from the adrenaline of war, and Michael's next move is hanging over us.Lucas's voice behind me, deep and persistent: "Audrey, come here."I turn to him, his eyes on mine—firm and empty. His hand closes around mine, and I allow him to pull me against him. "We fought a lot last night, but this isn't over," he whispers. His voice is a voice of urgency, and beneath the urgency, I feel the fear he works so hard to keep hidden.I squeeze him tight, aching in the heart. "I know," I reply softly. "But every time I think of Michael… every time I read his threats, I have this awful feeling that our peace will never belong to us."Lucas grips me tighter. "We will have our peace. We have to.""I have to cling to that, Audrey. I promise you,
Audrey's POV The house was also quiet, too quiet. Lucas stood by the window frame, his shoulders to me, his fists folded at his waist. The pointedness between his shoulders could have sliced through the air. During the last ten minutes, he hadn't uttered a word. Neither had I. I swallowed hard. My throat constricted. "Talk," I whispered almost inaudibly. Lucas slowly turned, his bright blue eyes locking onto mine. "What do you want me to say, Audrey? That this isn't as awful as it seems?" He let out a hollow laugh, shaking his head again. "Because it is. It's worse." My heart ached at the pain in his voice. "We'll get through it. Together." His jaw tightened. "You say that every time, but look where we are. Michael isn't some businessman attempting to bring me down—he's been planning this for years. This. this union of our families was built on deceptions, and now he's taking it and using it to destroy everything." I stepped off the bed and went over to him, grasping his hand. "L
