He was crawling up and towards me from the hole he was in. It was dark and seemed to be endless if I were to fall in through there. Why did he have claws!? I squinted my eyes as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing. He placed another hand in front of the other as he lifted his weight gradually, trying to crawl out of the hole. It was the man I'd stabbed to death. I was seeing clearly now and his eyes were wide open, with a trail of blood seeping through from the corners and trailing down his cheek.

"Just your imagination Jude." I whispered as I stared down at him from where I stood. Underneath my foot was a puddle of crimson liquid, blood. I forced a gag down, pressing my lips into a thin line and doing the one thing I did best asides from landing in trouble. Hurt myself. I used the index and thumb of my right fingers to pinch my left arm. Pain shot up my arm, directing my focus to where I was. My eyes left the man crawling towards me to look around. It was a dark expanse of s

  • The Darkest Obsession    Chapter 43

He was staring at me so intensely, and I'm screaming at myself to hold it together. I was lost in the deepest cobalt shade of blue, so calm and yet so fiery and I couldn't breathe. Nothing seemed to make sense anymore, the couch I sat on, the walls of the room seemed blurry. He was so captivating, so breathtaking, so intense. He had asked me a question and I was to give him an answer, to say something but my lips were trembling and I was losing my composure by just being around him. He stretched a hand to the back of his head and took off his mask, letting the plastic thing drop the floor.Cassien took a step closer, his features softening. "Jude." He said in a way I've never heard anyone say my name. So soft, so fragile, like he was afraid I would bolt in seconds, that it was all in his head and he was hallucinating. My lips parted, as I folded my hands in fist at my sides. Cassien never really addressed me with my name, maybe once but never again. Hearing him call me by my name di

  • The Darkest Obsession    Chapter 42

My eyes pressed together in a squint, before they fluttered open. I inhaled sharply as I'm immediately flooded with lights. I closed my eyes back quickly and let out some air. I took some moment to breathe and tried to recollect the last thing I remember. I was in the hall and I was trying to find a way out and I found it, but then. I rose to sit up and gasped but fell right back. Someone has knocked me out, it repeated over and over in my head, as my eyes fluttered close again, dragging me in.The first thing I noticed when consciousness slowly crept back into my mind was the softness beneath me, something far more comfortable than a hard concrete floor where I expected to wake up. My head was pounding like someone had taken a hammer to my skull, and when I tried to move, every muscle in my body protested with sharp stabs of pain that made me gasp softly. The second thing I noticed was the smell, not the metallic scent of blood and fear that had filled the ballroom, but something cle

  • The Darkest Obsession    Chapter 41

There's screaming, the music in the ballroom wasn't playing anymore. I think I heard a crash somewhere. I looked around frantically at the panicked faces of people rushing past me, mostly women, to the exit. A lot of people ducked behind tables and chairs and I reached for the gun that I strapped in between my thighs earlier. Another gunshot cracked through the room and I'm struggling to pinpoint where it's coming from till I see a body drop to the floor. He wore an expensive looking white suit. A white suit that's now red with his blood. My arms were outstretched in front of me, as I steady my hands with the gun, my finger ready to pull the trigger if need be. This wasn't my fight, I reminded myself. Interfering would cost me a lot, possibly my life, I repeated in my head. I spotted the man who had offered to dance with me once more. This time, in place of a glass of wine in his hand, he had a shiny pistol. He was behind a table, ducked and on the look for whoever he had his pistol

He pulled me flush against him, and I looked away, so he doesn't see the red blush that had managed to creep up my neck and cheeks. I inhaled, breathing in his scent, taking in the entire space around us again. I wanted to lean more into him, he felt too comfortable, too soft, irrespective of his rock hard exterior that was more than just his looks. He placed a finger on my chin and turned me to him. He's saying something but I'm not listening to him. I'm lost in the deepest cobalt shade of blue I've ever seen. His eyes looked fiercer, steamier, like he was trying to put a restraint on himself."Are you listening?" I heard him say, shaking me out of my thoughts. My eyebrows are raised and I looked at him dumbfounded. He has been talking for the past thirty seconds and I couldn't make a single word of what he said. His chiseled jawline and beautiful eyes were all too distracting and alluring. "Jude," He said firmly, tightening his hand around my waist. He paused a bit and his eyebal

The way he said it made my blood run cold, the implication clear that he knew exactly what kind of circles we were talking about, the dangerous world of organized crime and violence that existed beneath the polished surface of this elegant ballroom, "And what circles might those be?""The kind where asking too many questions can be hazardous to one's health," he replied smoothly, spinning me in a graceful turn that brought us closer together, close enough that I could see the calculating intelligence in his brown eyes, "But don't worry, I don't kiss and tell."Before I could ask what he meant by that, the song ended and he stepped back with another small bow, his smile polite but somehow predatory, "Thank you for the dance, it was delightful."He melted back into the crowd before I could respond, leaving me standing alone on the dance floor with my heart racing and the uncomfortable feeling that I'd just made a very dangerous enemy or perhaps revealed myself to someone who already kne

  • The Darkest Obsession    Chapter 38

The Velato Hotel stood like a golden palace under the dark sky, every window blazing with warm light that spilled onto the street below where expensive cars dropped off guests in designer gowns and perfectly tailored suits. I sat in my car across the street for a full ten minutes, watching the parade of wealth and power walking through those massive front doors, my hands gripping the steering wheel so tight my knuckles had turned white. The black mask Ava had chosen for me sat on the passenger seat, delicate and elegant with small crystals that caught the streetlight. The final piece of my disguise that would either save my life or get me killed tonight.Taking a deep breath that did nothing to calm my racing heart, I picked up the mask and tied it carefully around my head, checking my reflection in the rearview mirror one last time. The woman staring back at me was a stranger, elegant and mysterious with her black hair swept up in a sophisticated style and her golden eyes bright beh
