Chapter 3

作者: Sarah Lane
I offered a desolate and sorrowful smile that sent a visible chill down Kael's spine.

"Iris, what's wrong? What are you laughing at?"

I shook my head, my voice heavy with exhaustion, "Nothing. Just go. I want to rest."

My unnatural calmness made Kael vaguely uneasy, yet he still did as he was told. Driven by guilt, Kael personally took care of everything. He was fetching medicine and listening to the physician’s instructions, and even insisting on taking me home himself, despite the urgent family matters waiting for him.

After Kael wheeled me back into the bedroom, exhaustion quickly dragged me into a deep slumber. I didn't know how much time had passed when a sharp, piercing pain jolted me awake. I opened my eyes to see Luna's face hovering above mine, a bizarre smile playing on her lips.

My hands and feet were bound. The gauze on my forehead had fallen off. I found a long surgical needle was being driven into my body.

"What are you doing?"

"Wake up?" Luna said softly, and then pushed the needle half an inch deeper with a sickening crunch.

"Don't move around, okay? I'm stitching up your wounds. You're so badly injured. You need to recover properly."

I felt a spasm of agony, trying to struggle, but Luna had my limbs tied down tight.

"Let me go!" I hissed through gritted teeth.

"How can I do that?" Luna sneered. "Iris. You said I was hired specifically to take care of you. What I’m doing now is my duty."

The piercing pain came in waves. My arms, torso, and even my neck, were all punctured and bloody. Finally seeming satisfied, Luna stood up and wiped the blood off her hands. She took a piece of painkiller, pried open my mouth, and shoved it in. Then, humming a cheerful tune, she left.

Hearing the door click shut, I let out a ragged sigh of relief. Just when I thought Luna's torture was finally over, the painkiller box carelessly tossed on the floor caught my eye. It was Aspirin, the very drug I was severely allergic to.

Almost instantly, my throat began to tighten. My breathing grew difficult, my chest feeling as if it were being crushed by a boulder. Every breath required every ounce of my strength. I tried to crawl out for help, but no one responded.

The last trace of color almost drained from my pale face. I could only muster all my remaining strength to cry out, "Help…Kael…help…help me."

My voice grew fainter, my throat gradually swelling until I rendered mute. My consciousness began to blur, and I had to stop trying to crawl outward. I felt my body getting lighter, as if my soul was about to detach from this broken body. I thought I was going to die right then and there. And I did.

When consciousness returned, I heard the doctor talking about my conditions with Kael. I realized I had been rushed to the hospital at the very last moment. If help had arrived just a few minutes later, I would have died.

Kael merely sighed. Seeing the doctor out, he turned his head and said, "Are you satisfied now?"

I thought Kael was talking to me. I was about to open her eyes when Luna’s voice sounded in my ears and freezing me in place. I could almost hear the sound of something precious shattering in my heart.

"Mhm! I'm not angry anymore, Kael." Her sickeningly sweet voice cooed.

"Are you feeling better now, Luna? Don't be like this. It's not good for our baby.”

"Iris is fine…so can you go shopping with this afternoon? I want to buy some clothes for the baby."

"But today…" Kael hesitated, words catching in his throat.

I knew what he was struggling with. Today was our fifth wedding anniversary. Yet, his silence stretched on, agonizing moment before Kael finally wrapped his arm around Luna's shoulders.

"Alright, I'll go with you." They left, leaving me alone in the ward.

A familiar and chilling flash of light filled the ward. I opened my eyes and saw Elowen.

"I'm here to take you back."

I nodded and struggled to sit up. Then, Elowe gently drew my soul from my body. I knew what was left with my corpse was nothing but the love I had held for Kael over the past five years. My soul followed Elowe toward the door, and I took one last look at the dead body left on the bed.

At that exact moment, the vital signs on the monitor suddenly turned into a straight line.

[The Perspective of Iris]Back in the Underworld, I had already resumed my post as a Soul Reaper for several months. My existence returned to its original rhythm. I, alongside Elowen, guided new ghosts in the Underworld every day as if three hundred years had never passed. I had seen Kael three times. The first time was outside the hospital where I had died. I was guiding a young girl who had perished in a car accident and happened to pass by Kael in the morgue just as Kael learned of my death. I watched him stumbled, clutching a piece of note tightly in his hand. That was the farewell I had left behind. The second time was in the mansion that used to be our home. When I guided an elderly neighbor who had passed away from illness, a fierce argument between him and Luna erupted in the courtyard. I heard Kael’ hoarse and furious voice, "Get her out! She is never allowed to step into the mansion again!" The sounds of shattering glass and crying mixed into a chaotic mess. Passing by the g

From that day on, Kael’s desperate longing to see Iris grew stronger and stronger. He tried countless ways to end his life, like sharp knives, drugs, jumping from the rooftop, but he never succeeded. He always flinched at the very last second, lacking the final ounce of courage.. He jeered at himself, bending over and covering his face with his hands in agony. Kael fired all the servants in the mansion and restored the room exactly as it had been when Iris was here, living in a delusion as if she had never left. In the daytime, Kael would sit by the window just as Iris used to. He watched the sunlight shift inch by inch across the floor and observed the tree shadows swaying in the wind. At night, he drowned himself in alcohol, whiskey, vodka, whatever spirits he could find.Kael was terrified of being sober because sobriety was unbearable. In the silence, his memories would flood in like a tidal wave. He would see Iris's smile and tears, her calm gaze in her final moments, and that r

Kael turned to the servants, his voice cold and commanding, "Send her to the hospital. From now on, she is never allowed to step into this mansion again.""How dare you!"Before Luna could finish her words, she convulsed violently, the blood gushing out even more fiercely. Soon, Luna was rushed away to the hospital, and the mansion fell back into a deathly, suffocating silence.Outside the window, the night fell. The city in the distance was brightly lit, the world still bustling and noisy. But, inside this mansion, there was only a man standing alone, his hands stained with invisible blood.Kael stood up and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window in the living room. Iris used to love sitting here, basking in the sun and watching the blooming roses in the garden. He recalled the days when Iris was there. Hearing his steps, Iris would turn around with a look of pleasant surprise. The sunlight would gild her with a golden glow, making her look as beautiful as an angel.Right at the

Luna collapsed onto the floor, clutching her abdomen. Her face was as pale as a sheet, cold sweat seeping from her forehead. A stream of warm fluid gushed out from between her legs, staining her pure white silk nightgown a horrifying crimson."You…you…" Luna looked at Kael in disbelief, her eyes filled with sheer terror and despair.Kael wiped his hands meticulously with a handkerchief, his movements precise and cold. He glanced down at Luna from above, is eyes devoid of anything but icy fury."My baby…my baby…" Her voice was broken, a ragged whisper, "Kael, you killed our baby.""How could you… do this to me? You said you loved me! You promised to marry me and have our baby be your only heir. You said all of that!"Kael chuckled, a low, humorless sound, as if he had heard the most ridiculous joke in the world. He lowered his head, sneering down at her."Luna, are you even worthy of love? I never, ever loved you. The only person I have ever loved, from beginning to end, is Iris."Luna'

Iris’s body was brought back to the mansion, where the air conditioning blasted at full force, keeping the room in a perpetual, chilling winter. For over ten days, Kael refused to sign the cremation papers or arrange a funeral. He stubbornly clung to the delusion that she wasn't truly gone.It was already past noon when Kael finally returned to the mansion that day. He pushed open the door and immediately sensed that something was terribly wrong. The mansion, which he and Iris had shared for so many years, suddenly felt cavernous and hollow. In the living room, the cushions and ornaments Iris had personally chosen were gone. On the balcony, the roses she had loved so dearly had been uprooted, leaving nothing but overturned pots and scattered soil.Panic rising, he rushed frantically toward the bedroom, only to find Luna confronting a servant inside."Luna, you can't throw them away! Iris has barely gone. Not only did you bury her without permission, but now you want to throw out all he

The nurse finally couldn't bear to watch anymore. She stepped forward softly, trying to offer some comfort, "Kael, please accept our condolences. Iris… she is gone."Kael suddenly raised his head, tears streaming down his face as he denied it vehemently, "No! You're lying! She's not gone, she's just asleep! Where's the physician? Resuscitate her again! I can afford to pay any amount of money! Just save her!""Kael!" The nurse was startled by his outburst, "Please calm down. Iris has passed away. This is an unchangeable fact!"The word of “fact” was like a heavy hammer, completely shattering his grief-fueled self-deception. He slumped to the floor as if every ounce of strength had been drained from his body, his eyes staring fixedly at Iris's face. After a long while, a beast-like wail tore from his throat. The sound echoed through the empty morgue, shrill and despairing. The nurse's eyes turned red with sympathy. She quietly backed out, gently closing the heavy iron door behind her.Th
