(Adelaide & The Devil)

“Do you know what you’ve done to me?” Apollo asked, the words coming out rawer than he intended.

Adelaide pressed herself into the bedpost, eyes bright with fear and anger. “I didn’t do anything to you,” she said.

“You did,” he growled. “When you stabbed me. When you leapt from that tree like you meant to kill me. When you screamed at me. When you fought me under the ravine.” He took one shaky step, then stopped again.

“And when I bit you,” he finished, voice dropping to

  • The Devil's Broken Doll   Chapter 430 - Who Is She

(Adelaide)When Adelaide opened her eyes, Apollo was watching her, and the hunger there said it wasn’t over. He kissed her, slow and deep, and the taste of her own fire on his tongue brought back the want in an instant. She kissed him back, clawing at his hair, and felt Cael’s hands spread her legs, cool fingers probing and stroking. Apollo drew a line down her chest with his flaming touch, careful and precise, and this time the heat was sharper, painful, almost, but she loved it. She arched into the fire, moaning. They worked her together, the fire and the cold, the mouths and the hands, until she didn’t know where one demon ended and the other began. She felt her body clench, saw white behind her eyelids, and came apart, writhing between the two bodies, lost to everything but sensation. Apollo held her afterwards with an unexpected tenderness, one broad hand cupping her cheek while his thumb drifted absently through the loose strands of crimson hair that clung to her flushed ski

  • The Devil's Broken Doll   Chapter 429 - Watch Me

(Adelaide) “Are you afraid of me?” Cael murmured. The question was rhetorical; he did not wait for an answer. She shook her head, but the truth was more complicated. He leaned in, lips brushing her ear, voice low. “You should be.” The words were a caress, a warning, and a promise. Then, with a single, practised motion, Cael undid the second tie on her dress. The fabric gaped, sliding off her shoulder, and the pale skin underneath glowed in the golden twilight. He held the edge of the cloth, not yet stripping it away, but letting the anticipation burn between them. She breathed in, shuddering, and Apollo shifted forward at last, heat and cold fusing in the small space between the three of them. The dress was half off now, one sleeve limp, the rest crumpled at her waist. Cael’s hands hovered above her skin, poised to finish what he’d started, but he waited. The effect was excruciating, and Adelaide found herself silently pleading for him to continue, to do anything but leave h

  • The Devil's Broken Doll   Chapter 428 - The Hunger

(Adelaide) “I like you hungry.” She grinned, she couldn’t help it, and dug her nails into the hot skin of his back, feeling the strange give, the almost resilient bounce of it, as though his body was made of something more elemental than flesh. He picked her up, in one motion, as if she were not a grown woman but a doll, and deposited her gently on the bed’s edge. She laughed, shocked at the ease, and lay back, hair splayed out in a halo of red. He loomed over her, and the horns caught the last of the sun before it dropped out of sight. He ran a finger along her jaw, tracing it down the hollow of her throat, over her sternum, until it reached the line of her dress. There he stopped, just at the first hook, and met her gaze as if asking permission, though they both knew it had already been given. “Adelaide,” he said, and the way he pronounced her name made it sound like a spell or a curse. She shivered, feeling every syllable in her chest. He kissed her again, working his wa

  • The Devil's Broken Doll   Chapter 427 - Where Whispers Shiver

(Adelaide) The world before Adelaide quivered with the hush of late afternoon. She stood at the edge of the bed, fingers grazing the cool lip of white volcanic stone, pulse thrumming in the small bowl of her throat. The room spread itself wide with emptiness, cavernous and echoing, and the wind outside worked the curtains into low, ceaseless undulations. They billowed and snapped, hungry for a storm, yet the light through the glass remained tender. A pale, suspicious gold that set every dust mote ablaze and painted her freckled shoulders with faint, honeyed bars. The bed itself was a paradox: monstrous in its breadth, yet somehow softened by the timber that framed it, pale wood pocked with the pinholes of ancient worms, sanded smooth as skin. Its sheets were poured from cream, the kind that looked like it would dissolve at the first brush of a palm, and the pillows were stacked high as if to dare someone to fall from their summit. In the corner, a crystal pitcher sweated cold, a we

  • The Devil's Broken Doll   Chapter 426 - The Queen's Chamber

(Adelaide & Cael) "I have to go inside." The words barely left her lips, but belief burned in her bones. She could not explain it. She simply knew. Behind her, Cael felt every instinct he possessed collide at once. Part of him wanted to stop her. Another part wanted to open the door himself. But the oldest part of him, the part shaped by Emberborn stories whispered beside childhood fires, stood in silent awe. Because he knew, with a certainty that reached deeper than reason... The palace had not brought them here by accident. Cael watched her lift one trembling hand towards the polished brass handle. She hesitated only long enough to draw a single slow breath before wrapping her fingers around the cool metal. It turned effortlessly beneath her hand. No hidden mechanisms answered. No ancient locks ground awake behind the walls. The door just... opened. Slowly and quietly. As though someone inside had heard her knock. Warm afternoon light spilled gently across polished timber

  • The Devil's Broken Doll   Chapter 425 - Hellish Blooms

(Adelaide & Cael) "Or whether we've simply spent so many centuries in Hell that we forgot what beauty is supposed to look like." Adelaide laughed softly. "I don't think that's possible." "No?" She looked around the quiet corridor, at the faded bouquet still standing patiently where someone had left it almost a millennium before, at the sunlight warming white stone threaded with living gold, at the crystal windows scattering fractured rainbows across the floor. "I think," she whispered, "I'm beginning to understand that beauty simply learned a different language down here." Cael looked at her for a long moment. Then, without quite meaning to... He found himself hoping she would stay long enough to hear it spoken fluently. Her fingers drifted towards the nearest blossom. This time she didn't stop herself. She touched one brittle petal with the gentlest brush of her fingertip. For the briefest heartbeat... Nothing happened. Then the petal folded soundlessly beneath the w

(Apollo & Adelaide) The throne room did not empty. It bled out, slow and reluctant. It drained, slow as cooling blood. At Apollo’s dismissal, demons scattered like ash caught in a furnace draft. They retreated the way smoke does when cold air invades—slow, unwilling, eyes clinging to the throne,

(Adelaide)“Never,” she hissed. “Never.”Her whole body shook. Something glinted at the far side of the room — tall, dark, framed by heavy curtains. A door. Or something like one.She stumbled toward it, hope burning through her exhaustion. She shoved the curtains aside—A balcony.A view of Hell st
