Chapter 4

Author: Belen
Two days before the wedding, Lucia was allowed to visit me at the clinic.

She had grown much thinner. There were fresh bruises ringing her wrists. The guards said she had tried to climb the garden wall the night before and had been injured when they caught her. I rolled up her sleeve to check, but she took my braced right hand and held it against her chest instead, tears falling one by one onto the bandages.

In sign language, she told me she would go. If it meant I could leave the Moretti household alive, she was willing to get in that car.

When she finished, she rang the bell once, as if to prove she was truly all right. A second later, the bell rang three times in her palm.

I held her tight. "You don't have to trade yourself for my freedom. Father didn't leave us those roads so we could pave them with each other's lives."

Footsteps sounded outside. I told Lucia to dry her eyes and lay back down on the bed. Matteo and his advisor were talking in the hallway. The door wasn't fully shut.

The advisor asked in a low voice, "Your wife has been reaching out to the old Belardi loyalists. Do you think she'll actually leave?"

Matteo let out a quiet laugh. "She won't. She's sunk six years into me, her entire dowry, and every connection her father left her. If she leaves the Morettis, where would she even go? Sera is just trying to pressure me into calling off the marriage."

"But she's already taken off her ring."

"She says harsh things every time she's angry. She always comes back."

I looked down at Lucia. She had clearly heard everything. The last trace of color drained from her face.

So Matteo hadn't been blind to what I'd given him. He had tallied every sacrifice and decided the sunk cost would keep me chained to him.

That afternoon, I sent for him.

Twelve documents Julian had prepared lay on the table. The first eleven covered port storage, convoy passage, and fuel procurement authorizations. Tucked in among them was the last: a marriage dissolution agreement and a termination of the Belardi-Moretti alliance.

My right hand was useless, so I turned the pages for him with my left. "The northern route negotiations need Moretti authorization. Sign these, and I promise I won't make a scene on the wedding day. I'll also have the Belardi convoys help keep order."

Matteo studied me for a moment, clearly mistaking my compliance for surrender. He didn't read the details. He signed every page and pressed the Family seal at the end.

When he was done, he took my left hand. "Once Lucia is settled, I'll take you south for a while. We can start over."

I pulled my hand free and gathered the documents. "Give me the seventh token. The routes need full authorization, or there'll be problems on the wedding day."

He hesitated for a few seconds, then took a black velvet box from the safe. The brass bell token lay inside, its edges polished smooth by his fingers.

I closed the lid and looked up at him. "Matteo, this is the last time I will ever lie to you."

He assumed I meant I wouldn't cause a scene at the wedding. His expression actually softened. "I know you're doing all of this for Lucia. Once you've calmed down, we can both forget these past few days."

I didn't tell him that some days aren't meant to be forgotten. They're meant to close the door on an entire life.

After the wedding, Lucia and Elio moved to the North. She didn't hide away in her husband's house to live a quiet life. Instead, she took over two mountain transport routes and opened a trading firm right under the Volkov family's nose. At first, the men refused to do business with a young woman who couldn't speak. So she put every quote, loss estimate, and risk assessment in writing, spelled out in full, and had Elio translate without adding a single word of his own.Within six months, the three largest convoys in the North were calling her boss. When I went to see her, she was standing in the center of the warehouse directing the loading. The brass bell token hung from her chest. Every time it rang, the workers followed her hand signals and switched routes. Once, someone had used her silence to write a marriage pact for her. Now she didn't need to say a word, and the entire freight yard understood her orders. In that moment, I realized I hadn't only saved Lucia from a wedding. I had

Three years later, Lucia decided to get married. Her groom was Elio, a young interpreter from the North. The first time he met Lucia, he didn't make her signs sound prettier when he interpreted them, and he didn't try to make decisions for her because she was silent. He spent six months learning every sign she used, then joined her on convoy runs, at price negotiations, and during cargo inspections. The day he proposed, he set the ring on the table. He asked her first if she was willing, then asked for my blessing. Lucia smiled and rang the bell once before signing: That means safe, not yes. If you want to marry me, you'll have to understand my second answer without help.Elio's face went red with nerves. She deliberately made him wait a long time before slipping the ring on.On the eve of the wedding, Matteo sent an extravagant gift list: a lakefront house, two trucks, and a trust fund large enough to support them for life. Lucia kept only two cases of wedding candles and returned eve

The arson was quickly traced back to Viola. After the wedding debacle, she had been confined in a Moretti-owned country villa, awaiting an internal trial for embezzlement and fabricating evidence. She had bribed a food delivery driver to smuggle jewelry to the remnants of the port city's small gangs, instructing them to burn down Warehouse Three and pin it on the Volkovs. She knew that if war reignited on the northern route, everyone would say Matteo's original marriage pact had been the right call. She would rather let more people die than admit she was wrong. After leaving the hospital, Matteo personally escorted her to the Family council, leaning on a cane. He didn't sit in the Moretti leader's chair. He stood before the council as a witness and submitted the driver's confession, the wire-transfer records, and the warehouse surveillance footage one by one.Viola was still dressed immaculately when they brought her in. She saw the brace on his leg and laughed. "You crippled yourself

The following spring, the neutral freight market in Graystone officially opened.Every family on the northern route could purchase grain, medicine, fuel, and legal building materials here, but weapons, drugs, and human trafficking were forbidden throughout the Belardi warehouse district. Some laughed that I was running a crime family's business like a charity. My only response was, "If you want to use my roads, you follow my rules."Within three months, the number of gunfights had fallen by half. Small gangs that lived on hijacking lost their market. For the first time, residents along the route dared to keep their shops open after dark. The council gave me control of access along the northern route. Even the Volkovs were no exception. On the night of the opening celebration, Julian and I were in Warehouse Three, reviewing the final batch of fuel contracts. Lucia had gone to the station to meet an interpreter from the North. Most of the warehouse guards were stationed at the main gate.

Two weeks later, twenty-six sealed account boxes were delivered to Graystone.Inside were six years' worth of the Moretti Family's confidential financial records. Matteo had his accountants itemize every Belardi investment, every accrued interest payment, every dividend owed. The total came to thirty-seven point six million dollars. He attached no conditions. The only addition was a letter placed on top.Julian asked me, "Want me to burn it?""Keep the records. Give me the letter."I thought nothing he wrote could move me anymore, but when I opened the envelope, my fingers still paused.Matteo wrote that he had gone back to the estate to clear out Lucia's room. Beneath the bed frame, he found forty-seven crumpled sheets of paper. Each one bore the same sentence in shaky handwriting: I don't want to go. Sera, please save me.He had also found the pearl hairpin, snapped in two. The night before the wedding, Viola's people had entered Lucia's room searching for the bell token and thrown o

When the convoy reached the north gate of the port city, a row of headlights flared to life ahead.Over a dozen black sedans were parked across the road. The trucks behind them were loaded with jewelry, cash, property deeds, and warehouse keys. The deed to the old Belardi family home sat on the hood of the lead car.Matteo stood in the middle of the road, still wearing his black formal suit from the opera house. He carried no gun, and none of his men had their weapons raised. He simply walked to our car door after we stopped."This is compensation." He looked at me through the window. "Everything your father invested in the Morettis: the money, the warehouses, the convoys. I'm returning it threefold. The old house has been bought back too. Sera, come back with me. Let's talk this through."People had gathered along both sides of the road. The head of the Moretti Family had never backed down to anyone. Yet there, in front of all his men, he slowly went down on his knees in front of my c
