By the time I came out of surgery, my baby was gone. Three days later, Severin returned from a business trip, looking exhausted and travel-worn. A blissful smile still lingered on his face. "Honey, I learned some new pregnancy-friendly recipes. They're even more nutritious than the old ones. If you stick to them, I know your delivery will go smoothly. "I'll start making them for you tomorrow, okay?" When I didn't respond, Severin's gaze finally dropped from my pale face to my flat stomach. In that instant, his smile vanished.

Chapter 1

Ever since I got pregnant, Severin had gotten into the habit of talking to my belly the moment he came home.

He would gently stroke my belly, feeling our baby move beneath his hand.

"You're my most precious baby, but your mom is the woman I love most.

"So stay put in there and be good. Don't give her a hard time."

Out of habit, his eyes went straight to my belly when he came home that day.

But there was nothing there.

He stared at me, stunned.

"Flora, what happened to your belly? Why is it so flat?"

"Did you have a hard time without me?"

Severin spoke quickly, as if he were afraid I'd cut him off.

"I'll go make you something to eat. It's okay, I'm home now. You'll get your strength back soon."

When he finally fell silent, I met his eyes and said,

"The baby's gone, Severin."

He stared at me until his eyes reddened.

Then he looked away, shaken.

"It's okay. We'll have another baby."

"If it's a girl, I'll keep her close. Whoever she marries will become part of our family, and she'll live under my protection her whole life.

"If it's a boy, I'll make him my heir. Someday he'll take over as Don.

"Next time... I swear I won't leave your side. I'll do better. I'll keep you and our baby safe.

"It must be because I wasn't here. You weren't careful, and that's why this happened."

I knew Severin was trying to convince himself.

But even he couldn't believe his own words.
