My study room was quiet the way I preferred it, no staff, no movement, just the low light and the particular silence of a building that knew better than to make noise when I was thinking.

Sophie had called three times in the last hour. I watched her name appear on the screen the fourth time and felt the specific irritation of a useful thing that had started requiring maintenance.
