LOGINMy first instinct was to push him off but he grabbed my wrist before I could slip away, dragging me down so fast I landed on top of him, my tits pressed against his chest.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?!” I snapped, struggling to pull back. He stared at me like I just committed a crime. His voice exploded. “How the hell could you do this to me?!” I froze. My body stiffened against his. It was already worse that this bastard has showed up to the one place I could clear my head but I needed mother earth to open up and swallow me because the fucking bastard had known it was me all along, shit I'm going to throw up. “You better show up tomorrow,” he barked, jaw clenched. “I swear, Hazel. I don’t care what the fuck this is. You better resume like nothing happened.” I shoved at him again, angrier this time. “Get off me! I have every right to quit working for an asshole like you.” “No,” he hissed, pulling me right back. “You quit your job to whore around? This? This is what you left for?!” I snapped. I pushed off his chest, stood up fast and slapped him across the face. The sound cracked through the room. His head jerked slightly, eyes wide. I never thought I'd talk back to Alan let alone slap the bitch across his face. “Don’t you ever call me that again,” I shouted, my chest rising fast. “You bitch-ass motherfucker. You smug, manipulative piece of shit.” I could hear his breathing getting heavier by the minute, I knew it was the last thing he expected but he didn't budge, getting up to his feet, his reddened eyes fixed on me. “Shut the fuck up!” I turned toward the corner and started grabbing my things off the floor, yanking straps into place and stuffing things into my bag with shaking hands. “You don’t get to speak to me like that just because you paid for something you didn’t even understand.” “You were on my lap five seconds ago, and you knew who I was, you don't get to act like a-” “And now I want to throw up,” I fired back without turning around. “Do you know how stupid you look right now?” he yelled. “You’re going to throw away your entire career over some glitter and fake power?” I spun around fast. “Don’t act like you ever respected me when I was in your damn office getting you coffee and watching you throw tantrums over paperclips. Don’t pretend you ever gave a single shit.” “I am not pretending, I do not give a shit, is it more pay you wanted, you could have asked for it!” he raised his voice. I zipped my bag shut and slung it over my shoulder, “you fucking asshole, it's like talking to a brick wall, what was I expecti, get the fuck out of my face.” I turned toward the door. “You think you can walk out after this and everything will be fine?” he said. “No company will ever work with you after this!” I stopped at the doorway. My fingers curled tight around the handle. “Do it,” I said without turning back, “see if I care.” I yanked the door open and walked out before he could say another word. “Shit. Shit. Shit.” I pressed my palms against my face as the taxi rolled through the street. My stomach was doing flips. My head was pounding. How the hell was I supposed to recover from that? The slap, the insults or the fact that I almost gave Alan Wood a blowjob and he knew it. Fuck. I climbed out in front of my building and paid the driver with trembling fingers. My legs felt numb as I climbed the stairs. I just needed my bed, darkness, silence, just five minutes to breathe. I opened the door. Moaning. Loud, unfiltered moaning. You’ve got to be kidding me. I stepped into the apartment and froze. My roommate Frank was on the couch, shirt half off, pants around his knees, going to town on some girl who clearly had no shame if she was sleeping with Frank of all men. “Frank?!” I yelled. He jolted like he’d been electrocuted and scrambled to pull up his pants. “Shit, shit, Hazel...I thought you weren’t coming back until five in the morning!” “You have a whole damn bedroom!” I shouted, throwing my hands in the air. “What the fuck, Frank?! I eat on that couch!” Frank and I had been friends since middle school and when we both moved to Florida after college and has been roommates for the last four years. He was best friend and from the look of things, an asshole. The girl squeaked and grabbed a pillow, burying her face like I couldn’t still see her legs sprawled out like a damn yoga class. Frank winced. “I’m sorry, okay? I thought you were still at work.” His eyebrows furrowed as if he was wondering which information he had to process. “Yeah, well, I quit, got insulted, sexually humiliated, and now I’ve walked into this, so congrats. You’ve just made a shit day worse.” “You what?!” “I'm not going to have a conversation with you with an erect dick in my face,” I snapped at him. I stormed down the hallway to my room and slammed the door behind me. I dropped my bag to the floor and let out a deep, frustrated sigh. “Could this day get any worse?” I didn’t mean it literally but apparently the universe was on crack tonight. I turned toward the window to shut the blinds and froze. A tall figure was standing across the street. Just… standing there. Arms crossed, head tilted up, watching ms. My breath caught in my throat as I stepped closer, heart hammering. It was Alan. He followed me home. I stumbled back from the window, mouth open, hands shaking. Finale“Mom, I’m scared.”Hazel’s arms tightened around me. “Of what?”I looked at the car waiting beneath the lights.“Going with him. Waking up tomorrow as his wife.” I twisted her dress in my fists. “What if I don’t know how to be one?”Mom pulled back. “How to do what?”“Any of it. What if marriage changes him? What if it changes me? What if I disappoint him, or try so hard to make him happy that I disappear? What if I’m a terrible mother?” My hand covered my stomach. “What if I need you when I’m supposed to be grown?”Her face crumpled. She held my cheeks and pressed her forehead to mine.“You do not stop being my daughter because someone calls you Mrs Dalton.”“But I’m leaving.”“You’re going home with your husband. That isn’t the same as leaving me.”“What if forever feels different from loving him today?”“It will. Some days will be harder. Some will be ordinary.” Her thumbs wiped my tears. “Marriage is not knowing exactly what to do. It is telling him when you don’t. It is ch
Third Person POVThree weeks later, every bell around Lake Como rang for Eve Wood. From the villa window, she saw flower covered boats on the water and hundreds of guests beneath arches of white roses. It looked royal. Eve barely noticed.Hazel fastened the last pearl button on Eve’s ivory gown. Silk skimmed her body before opening into a full skirt, and the olive leaf veil covered the floor.Hazel kept her fingers on the button. “Mom?” Their eyes met in the mirror. Her cheeks were full again. No oxygen tube, no blood, no doctor waiting outside. The disease was healing.“I thought I would miss this,” Hazel whispered.Eve turned carefully and caught both her hands. “Don’t say that.”“I need to.” Hazel smiled through tears. “I thought I would never see this. Now I get to watch you marry the man who refused to lose us.”Eve wrapped her arms around her mother. Hazel held her tightly, one hand settling carefully over Eve’s stomach. “You’re crushing my grandchild.”“You started it.” Mabel d
By the time I found my shoes, Adam had buttoned his shirt and looked too pleased with himself.I sat on his desk, fastening one heel while he watched me with a smile I could not survive.“Stop looking at me like that.”“Like what?”“Like you didn’t destroy our agreement on your office floor.”He crouched before me and fixed the strap. His fingers brushed my ankle before he kissed my knee.“I have something to show you.”I narrowed my eyes. “Should I be worried?”“Probably.” He stood and held out his hand. “Come with me.”A car waited downstairs. Adam refused to explain where we were going when Milan disappeared behind us. He placed my hand on his thigh and covered it with his.Two hours later, blue appeared between the trees.“Is that the sea?”Adam glanced at me instead of the view. “Yes.”Near Camogli, we passed faded shutters and balconies crowded with flowers. We turned through a stone arch onto a lane lined with lemon trees. A cream house with blue shutters and vines climbing one
He pulled me into another kiss like he’d been starving for it all morning. His mouth was hot and impatient, tongue sliding against mine while his hands stayed locked under my thighs. I could feel how hard he already was through his trousers, pressed right up against the seam of my skirt. My laugh broke against his lips.“You called five times because you wanted to fuck me on your desk.”“I called five times because I missed you.” His voice was wrecked already. “The desk is a bonus.”He set me down just long enough to lock the office door. Then he was back between my knees, shoving my skirt up my thighs, palms dragging over bare skin. I yanked his shirt out of his waistband and got two buttons undone before he lost patience and ripped the rest. A button pinged off the desk and disappeared under a chair. “Adam-”“I know.” His forehead dropped to mine. His hand slid down, hesitated right over my stomach, thumb stroking once, careful as hell. “The baby.”I stared at him. Then I st
Eve POVSix weeks after Adam proposed, I stood on a platform in a Milan bridal shop while Mabel pulled at the zipper of a dress that refused to close.“Stop breathing,” she said.“That feels like a bad condition for buying it.”She released the zipper and stepped back. “No. The dress is fighting you, and I don’t trust anything that fights the bride.”I held the bodice against my chest and looked at Dante. He sat beside three garment bags, scrolling through his phone.“Any thoughts?” I asked.“I was told my only jobs were carrying bags and keeping Adam away.”Mabel walked past him to collect her coffee. Dante caught her wrist, pulled her between his knees and kissed her temple before handing her the cup.Three weeks after Mabel finally took him back, Dante still touched her carefully. She had made him work for forgiveness after walking in on him kissing me, and he knew better than to waste his second chance.“Still on probation?” I asked.Mabel took a sip. “Very much.”The next dress w
His hand was still clamped over my mouth when I shoved at his chest. He removed it slowly but didn’t step back. “Why are you here with Gal?” he demanded. I swallowed, keeping my chin up even though my heart was slamming against my ribs, “that’s none of your business.” His jaw flexed, “it
“Excuse you?” I said, eyes wide, phone pressed to my ear like I didn’t just hear what I thought I heard. Alan’s voice didn’t even flinch. “You heard me.” “Why the fuck would I do that?” I snapped, sitting up straight on my bed, heart racing. “You said you wanted your life back,” he said, vo
I headed downstairs, arms folded tight across my chest. My mouth was dry, my heart still thumping from what I saw. Or thought I saw. Frank’s disaster from earlier was thankfully gone from the living room. Couch was empty. Lights were dimmed. I let out a slow breath, half-expecting to find Alan
Hazel pov My first thought was to run the fuck away but I knew this man, he'd go after me, peel my damned mask off even if it was against the contract and my life as I knew it would be over. My body froze, but I forced my shoulders straight. The mask hid half my face. He couldn’t know unles
