Chapter 1

"Absolutely not, Evelyn!" My father strode over and took me by the shoulders. "The north is much too far away. And you're my youngest daughter. If your mother knew I'd married you off so far away, she'd—"

"Mother would understand."

He stared at me, his eyes reddening. "Your mother came from the north. She told me it snows ten months a year there. They barely see the sun. You're already frail. How could you survive up there?"

I looked down, my chest tightening.

He patted my shoulder. "Evelyn, tell me. Have those three been mistreating you?"

I started to answer.

But I didn't know what to say.

Mistreating me? No.

They'd simply changed. I was no longer the person they cherished most.

I couldn't tell my father that. If I told him about each incident on its own, I'd sound like I was overreacting.

Lucas used to wait outside my chambers the day before my dragon breath became unstable. Now he hadn't visited in about two weeks.

Darian always said I was too delicate, but he'd stay with me all night when my dragon breath was unsettled. Three days ago, he hadn't shown up either.

As for Silas, the dragon crystal bracelet he'd made for me was now Kassan's.

I touched the pendant resting against my chest. The three of them had given it to me at my coming-of-age celebration.

Among dragons, offering someone a scale was a declaration of love.

Three scales hung from the pendant: red as fire, purple as lightning, and blue as ice.

Now their light seemed so dim.

When I didn't answer, my father sighed. "Evelyn, whatever they've done, you grew up together. Give them a little time. Besides, I don't want you so far away. I wouldn't be able to protect you."

I stayed silent.

"Evelyn?" he asked, worried.

"It's nothing," I said. "I'm just tired."

I got up to leave. The treatment a few days earlier hadn't fully settled my dragon breath.

Silas had arrived too late. He'd done everything he could, but the power inside me was still churning, leaving me dazed and exhausted.

In the corridor, I bumped into someone.

Darian.

I hadn't seen him in several days.

He was on duty as my father's personal guard.

For once, he didn't greet me with a cutting remark. He frowned and looked me over. "You look awful."

"Oh." I walked around him.

He followed me for a few steps.

Clearly, he didn't appreciate being brushed off.

"I'm trying to show you I care, Evelyn." He caught my wrist. "Could you be a little more mature? Look at Kassan. She's raising a child alone, but she never makes trouble for anyone."

I stopped and looked up at him. "It was your turn to help me last time, Darian. You didn't come."

He looked taken aback for a moment. Then he said awkwardly, "Kassan was having some trouble that day. I went to deal with it."

"Right. And that's why I look awful." I lifted my chin, my voice tight.

His frown deepened. "You only need one of us there, don't you? Kassan just arrived. She has no husband and no one to back her up. She needs me more than you do."

I stared into his eyes.

He seemed to have forgotten what he'd told me when Lucas failed to come about two weeks ago. "Who could possibly matter more than you?"

Now Darian looked perfectly at ease, as if he'd done nothing wrong.

My chest tightened painfully. "Then don't bother coming again," I said coldly. "There'll always be someone else."

His expression changed, but I'd already turned and walked away.

Darian called my name. I pretended not to hear.

I went to the apothecary for medicine.

The elderly apothecary pressed a bottle into my hand with a sigh. "Princess, this will only ease the pain for a little while. It won't treat your condition. You still need someone to help you."

"Yes," I said quietly. "I know."

I just couldn't shake my unease.

On the day of my next treatment, I waited for Silas in my chambers.

Night fell, and he still hadn't come.

Only last week, he'd promised he would always be there for me.

I ran out of my chambers.

My unstable dragon breath made me dizzy. Every barefoot step felt like walking on broken glass.

Bracing myself against the wall, I stumbled to the priest's hall on the eastern side of the court.

I was about to knock when I heard his voice, low and gentle, through the door.

He was telling Morrie Blackthorn, Kassan's young son, a story.

I froze with my hand raised. After a long pause, I knocked anyway.

Silas opened the door. He blinked at me. "Evelyn?"

"Silas." My voice was hoarse. "Why didn't you come to my chambers?"

He met my eyes, then quickly looked away. "Kassan's son just arrived. He's having trouble settling in. I'm keeping him company."

"But you promised—"

"I know," he interrupted, meeting my eyes again. "But I heard you picked up some medicine."

After a pause, he added, "I'm happy for you, Evelyn. You're finally growing up. You're finding ways to control your dragon breath yourself. You don't need to rely on us anymore."

I froze, my hand still outstretched, unable to take another step.

Behind Silas, the little black dragon peeked around his leg and made a face at me.

Morrie tugged on his pant leg. "Silas, I'm sleepy."

Silas answered him tenderly, then gave me a polite bow. "Go back and get some rest, Evelyn."

The door slammed shut.

For the first time, he'd shut me out.

Lucas sounded so hoarse I barely recognized his voice. The once-glorious commander of the dragon knights was gaunt now, no longer the strong, imposing figure I remembered.Darian followed him. His old contempt was gone. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his lightning power surged wildly beneath his skin.Silas's gaze was as gentle as ever, but he was pale and seemed worn down by constant exhaustion. All three stared at my rounded belly and froze."You're... pregnant?" Darian whispered, as if he'd been struck."Yes." I nodded. "This is my husband, Derek."Derek put an arm around my shoulders and frowned at them.No one spoke. The air seemed to freeze. Then Lucas dropped to one knee.He held out a scarlet scale in his palm. "Evelyn, I was a fool. I broke my promise. I failed you. I... please, give me another chance."Darian knelt, too. "I've regretted it every day since. Evelyn, please. At least accept my scale—"Silas said nothing. He just looked at me, devastated.Derek shifted to st

So much could change in five years. The northern wind and snow hadn't broken me. They'd made me into someone new.Five years after I left, Derek and I brought our daughter, Emma Frostborne, to the Golden Crown Court to visit my father.I wore a long silver-white cloak and a crown of ice crystals.Color had returned to my once-pale face, and the timidity in my eyes was gone. I was older now, calmer and more confident. When I stepped out of the carriage, the court guards dropped to their knees. It wasn't because I was a princess. They felt the deep, powerful dragon breath of the frost dragon chief's wife.Everything at the Golden Crown Court seemed unchanged.I rested a hand on my rounded belly. The little one inside gave me a small kick."Mommy, it's so big. Bigger than home." Emma tipped her face up and looked around, her pale gray eyes full of curiosity. She had Derek's long silver hair, but she looked like me.Derek shifted into human form beside me and rested a hand against my lower

The study door closed with a heavy thud.Lucas, Darian, and Silas stood in the middle of the room, watching Aldric slowly take his seat.Lucas spoke first. "Your Majesty, we only want to know which princess has gone north to get married."Aldric raised a hand, cutting him off.The three men exchanged uncertain looks.Silas stepped forward. "Your Majesty, we hadn't heard about any marriage. We've been looking for Evelyn all morning—""Evelyn?" Aldric gave a bitter smile, his voice hardening. "So you still remember her! Unfortunately for you, she's already boarded the carriage to the north."Darian went deathly pale.He took a hurried step forward. "Your Majesty! She's in no condition to go north!""It was her choice!" Aldric cut in, glaring at him. "She insisted on leaving! She said she couldn't bear another day here. I asked why. She wouldn't tell me. But I suspect you know better than I do."Silas flushed, then paled. "Your Majesty, we—"Aldric picked up a box from his desk and tossed

By the time they reached the square, a crowd had gathered.Their hearts pounded in their throats. The dragon knights hadn't been ordered to provide an escort. The king's closest courtiers had heard no rumors. No one had asked the priests to offer wedding prayers. This wedding seemed to have come out of nowhere. It was all too strange, too sudden. They couldn't make sense of it.They scanned the crowd for Evelyn, desperate for a glimpse of her. Perhaps she'd come to watch, too.Aldric stood alone on the dais in the center of the square.A silver-white frost dragon circled above him. A carriage of the same color waited nearby.Maids were helping a slender figure in a wedding gown into the carriage.A white veil hid her face. She moved slowly, as though every step were a struggle. The frost dragon lowered its head and settled quietly in front of the carriage, waiting for her to take her seat.Lucas's chest tightened. During morning training, Lucas heard that Evelyn had spent a long time in King Aldric Goldcrest's study the night before. He stopped mid-swing.His first thought was that she'd gone to complain about them again. He hurried down the corridor to her chambers.Darian and Silas had just arrived, too. They exchanged a look. Clearly, all three were thinking the same thing.Lucas stepped forward and knocked. The door wasn't locked. It creaked open.Evelyn wasn't there. The room looked empty. Her bed was neatly made, as if no one had slept in it.A faint smell of bitter medicine and blood lingered in the air.Several medicine bottles lay at the foot of the bed.Silas pushed past them and picked one up, sniffing it with a frown. "You're only supposed to take one bottle of this pain medicine at a time. There are at least five or six here."Lucas turned uneasily to Darian.Darian was staring in horror at a dark red bloodstain beside the bed. "Yesterday...""She really was hurt yesterday..." Silas

I spent the next day drifting in and out of sleep. Between my unstable dragon breath and what had happened at the festival, I felt hollowed out. I couldn't even find the strength to pack for the journey north and my new life there. That evening, I dimly heard a knock.I struggled to my feet and opened the door.Kassan stood outside with a bowl of medicine. She looked more like the victim than I did."Princess," she said softly, "I've come to apologize for what Morrie did at the festival yesterday. He didn't know any better."The sight of her made my chest tighten."There's no need," I said. "Please leave."Instead, she put a hand against the door and slipped past me.I frowned and looked her in the eye. "Get out."She turned, staring at my high collar. A strange smile crossed her face. "A dragon's scales are a source of pride, aren't they? Tell me, how much power will you have without this one?"She pulled a long, thin dragon crystal hairpin from her sleeve and drove it into the back o
