Chapter 124

Author: Hugh White
A streak of lightning struck the zombies in front of the soldier. Shaken but alive, the man was yanked back by Liam, but he had taken a massive bite mark on his helmet.

Liam threw the injured man over his shoulder and kept charging forward.

"Captain Caldwell, I'm not one of your men! Leave me here and just go!" the soldier shouted.

"Anyone who follows me is my man," Liam said coldly.

Hayley finally understood why Derek and the others refused to leave Liam. He was a cold man, but he was fiercely loyal.

Zzzz…

Crack!

Lightning shot across the air again and again. One by one, the other team members dropped their weapons and unleashed their gifts.

Thud!

Splash!

Shing!

Egg-sized orbs of water, fireballs, and flying blades of metal shot through the air.

None of their powers were strong, but at this point, they were using every last bit they had left.

Those without elemental Gifts were either strength or speed-enhanced. They gripped their military-grade bayonets and rushed in, rel

"Countdown: 29 seconds!""Raargh…"Under the red alarm lights, a zombie in tattered patient clothes closest to them lunged forward with a gaping mouth.Bang!Just as the zombie leapt, a bullet tore through the center of its forehead. A charred pea-sized hole marked its forehead, and at the back of its skull, a bowl-sized crater opened up.Dark red blood, mixed with pale gray brain matter, burst from the back of the zombie's head. Its skull cracked like soft pudding, the contents splattering apart as if crushed by a sudden, brutal force. Under the impact, chunks of flesh and bone sprayed outward. In an instant, the zombie's skull was a messy, bloody crater. Blood, brain matter, and shattered bone were fused into a grotesque mass. One shot to the head! The headshot zombie fell stiffly to the ground.Liam bellowed, "Push forward!"At his command, every special forces soldier on site surged toward the exit at full speed.Bang, bang, bang!Bang, bang, bang, bang!Bang, bang, ba

Thank god they made it out!Right then, loud gunshots rang out. Behind them, everyone opened fire to hold back the child zombies while Nadia sprinted for the quarantine-room controls."Come on, close already! Start the destruction protocol!" she shouted, slamming buttons like a madwoman before everyone inside had even cleared the doorway.Hayley had already had enough. She kicked Nadia so hard that the woman flew back. "Damn it! You idiot!"Hayley planted herself at the door and controlled the closing sequence, and barked, "Three seconds!" After that, she started shouting to everyone still inside."Three!"A tide of child zombies poured toward the exit. More slammed hard against the observation glass."Two!"Crack! Spiderweb fractures raced across the glass as the child zombies' heads smashed into it again and again. Each hit flattened their faces an inch or two more. Their expressions grew more warped and monstrous."One!"Crash!Shards of glass showered the floor.A

Just then, Hayley saw everyone who had charged forward suddenly turn back and start running the other way. They were firing off the last of their flash grenades and ammo, covering Liam and Nadia as the two broke through the crowd.Through the chaos, Liam caught sight of Hayley. His eyes lit up, as if he was silently thanking her for the warning.Because of her, they had all made it out alive.Liam really did owe her one. If it weren't for Hayley, he probably wouldn't have made it through the day. This mission was one of the highest-level operations under Base K1's triple S-class order. Liam had been sent to a pharmaceutical research facility to retrieve old data and lab instruments that might contain clues about the zombie virus, records that existed from before the outbreak. The goal was to uncover the secret of how the energy within the zombie crystal cores could be extracted. Before the outbreak, the government had already detected traces of this strange dormant virus in seve

Beyond the glass pane was a pile of mangled corpses, stacked and scattered across the room.None of the bodies was intact. Some had nothing left but bare leg bones, some had hollowed-out stomachs, and some were missing half their heads. The walls of the quarantine room were smeared with dark, dried blood. Everything inside looked like the aftermath of a massacre straight out of a horror movie. But what made their blood run cold was what they saw in the corner. It was a small child."Look!" Derek shouted, pointing toward the far end of the room.A little girl, about six years old, was curled in the arms of a female corpse. She was nudging at the corpse as if it were her mother, as if she just wanted a hug. Then, the child turned her head toward them.Everyone's breath caught at once.It wasn't the face of a sweet little girl, but one straight out of a nightmare. Her skin was blackened and bruised, her once innocent eyes now pale gray and hollow. The small white dress she wore

Ding!Click! The deal was sealed. Hayley came back and swiped the card. The heavy metal door slowly creaked open. She stood steadily behind Liam, her eyes locked on the room ahead. The inside was pitch black, with not a single light on. The hallway light spilled in just enough to reveal a small steel-walled waiting room.In the center of the room stood a large pane of glass. The lighting wasn't strong enough to see through clearly, but it looked like there was a much bigger area beyond it.It was completely silent. Yet, in that dark, sealed room, Hayley could feel an invisible pressure pressing down on her, like something unknown was hiding inside.Hayley was a mental-variant Gifted. Her ability was very special. When she focused, she could sense zombies or other Gifted nearby. She also had an almost supernatural instinct for danger.Coming down to B2 and walking through the zombie-filled corridors earlier hadn't triggered any alarm in her mind. But the moment this door opened,
