Chapter 5

Author: Isabelle Cross
"Where are you?" Nathan's voice was lower than usual, tight with urgency.

"Home."

"I'm here. I'll meet you outside."

I opened the door and saw Nathan standing there.

Before I could speak, he said, "I've already talked to our parents. The wedding is being planned. We're getting married in three days. I don't want to waste any more time."

Then, he grabbed my hand and started walking.

His palm was damp. He was nervous.

Nathan had never been the nervous type—not in finance or anything.

He came from a powerful financial family in the San Francisco Bay Area. His father had founded one of the most prominent family offices there. His mother was a behavioral finance professor at Harvard Business School. Nathan was also one of the youngest hedge fund founders to become a named partner on Wall Street. His fund had just led a 1-billion-dollar cross-border acquisition.

If Edward was an overachieving elite climbing the career ladder at a traditional investment bank, Nathan was the one at the top of the pyramid, holding the ladder.

Yet, there he was, nervous like a teenage boy about to marry his high school crush.

I looked at his tense jawline and stopped walking.

I looked him in the eyes, my voice steady as I said, "Nathan, I want a garden wedding."

He paused for a second, then turned back to me and smiled. His eyes lit up like stars.

"Okay."

Just like that, my mind drifted back to the past.

Nathan was the golden boy everyone liked back in high school, while I was the girl who always struggled with her grades.

He never made me feel stupid. He always sat beside me, patiently explaining problems repeatedly, his voice gentle, never changing.

In college, we ended up on opposite coasts. He would fly several hours from Silicon Valley to New York every week—just to have dinner with me. He kept doing that for three whole years.

Until I started dating Edward.

After that, Nathan quietly disappeared from my life.

The next day, I stood in the Waldorf Astoria ballroom in New York at the annual Capital Anchor Summit—one of the most elite finance events in the world.

Crystal chandeliers cast a cold, luxurious light across the room. The air smelled like expensive champagne and power.

All around me were the giants of global finance—CEOs, partners, rising stars.

I did not expect the event's 'Emerging Leaders Spotlight' to feature none other than Edward and Juliet.

They had just finished their on-stage interview. The host made a lighthearted joke. "You two are the golden duo of finance. People say you work well together in and out of the office?"

Edward did not answer right away. He turned slightly, his eyes landing right on me.

That look—cold, sharp, and calculating—was the same look he gave to projects he planned to shut down.

Juliet gently linked her arm through his.

"Oh, don't get the wrong idea. We're just like brother and sister—"

Then, without warning, Edward pulled her closer and wrapped his arm tightly around her waist. He faced the cameras and the entire crowd of media and financial elites.

His voice was calm but firm.

"Thank you for your interest. Actually, we do have exciting news. Juliet is pregnant. We're expecting a little one very soon."

Juliet did not manage to kill Edward. She jerked the wheel a second before impact. The car flipped over the guardrail at the street corner, metal screeching against concrete. She was severely injured—shattered spine and permanent paralysis from the waist down. Before slipping into the ICU, her gaze was wild. She kept mumbling Edward's name."He's mine… He's mine…"However, she never saw him again.Edward never stepped into the hospital.Instead, he faced multiple lawsuits. Some of the legal letters came directly from Nathan's firm. The same so-called brothers he once leaned on had disappeared. After Cole Capital blacklisted him, no one returned his calls. His partnership offer at Sterling & Burne Capital was permanently revoked. He tried to drag Juliet into a countersuit—only to learn she had already signed a DNR and withdrew from all civil cooperation. In the end, Edward resigned from Sterling & Burne Capital. He returned to a job managing warehouse leases that his family h

One week later, the Women in Capital Forum for Financial Times Manhattan was held.It was my first time speaking as a guest at a public finance forum. The stage lights were bright. Three female investors and two ESG strategy directors from cross-border firms were seated beside me, and that day's guest commentator was Nathan Cole. The moderator turned toward me."Ms. Margot Robinson, as a key founder funded by Hudson Financial this year, can you briefly share your Female Asset Perception model within the ESG framework?"I calmly picked up the mic and explained, "Traditional market structures are priced around risk volatility, return forecasts, and capital leverage."But under ESG, emotional value, trust structures, and community-based credit are severely underestimated variables."Our project doesn't focus on sustainability in the traditional sense. We target how women participate and lead in microeconomic ecosystems."Nathan gave me a look—subtle but full of meaning.I smiled

Edward was still pinned down by security. He was angry, but he did not struggle. His eyes stayed locked on Nathan's hand around my waist. His voice was hoarse as he said, "Margot, how could you do this to me?"Today was supposed to be our wedding day. I skipped Juliet's check-up. I bought your favorite flowers. I even got the necklace you liked."I didn't get mad about your little meltdown this week. I didn't say anything about the scene you caused at the alumni gala. Just come home with me now, and we'll start over again."I said nothing. I just looked at him—calm, unmoved. His voice dropped, softer now, almost begging."I'm sorry. I mean it. I know I messed up. She's just a brother to me. You're the only one I ever truly wanted to marry."Forgive me. Come home, please?"I finally spoke. My voice was steady—quiet but clear enough for the whole room to hear."Edward, I'm no longer the girl who lost sleep over every word you said."You think I'm supposed to be moved? That fl

The Coles had rented out the most exclusive lawn venue on the Upper East Side.I wore a custom Elie Saab wedding gown.Nathan stood across me, dressed in a perfectly tailored classic black tuxedo. He looked at me with a more serious and reverent gaze than I had ever seen. The officiant announced to the crowd, "By the authority vested in me, I pronounce Nathan and Margot husband and wife. Nathan, you may kiss your bride."The guests erupted in cheers and applause.Nathan leaned in and kissed me.Before the clapping had even faded, he swept one arm behind my knees and the other around my back.I gasped as my feet left the ground—he carried me, princess-style, holding me close to his chest.Just then, chaos erupted at the entrance.Edward stormed into the hall, dressed in a dark gray suit, his face like stone."Margot, I told you I'd come home today."He marched down the aisle, eyes locked on Nathan's arms."I skipped Juliet's check-up. I brought flowers, gifts…and this is wha

Edward stayed quiet for a few days, assuming Margot would calm down eventually. It was supposed to be his and Margot's wedding day.He even packed carefully, folding his dirty shirts neatly into his suitcase. He knew Margot always hand-washed and ironed them for him—pressed crisp and perfect, much better than the machines at the dry cleaner.Contrastively, Juliet always tossed her clothes into the laundry room, never even separating colors from whites. The thought made him frown; he felt annoyed.Just then, Juliet walked in wearing a tank top and shorts."I have a check-up today. Come with me?""Not today. I'm going home."Edward did not even look up."Come on, man," she said, wrapping her arms around his neck.He pushed her off and gave her a quick glance. Her dark tan, that sharp ponytail, the loose T-shirt—she looked like one of the guys on the deal team if it were not for the baby bump.Suddenly, his stomach turned, wondering how he could have even spent a night with Ju

"You're actually defending her?" Juliet's voice rose sharply."Nathan, you're the most rational person I know. Don't tell me you've fallen for her poor-little-me act too."She leaned toward Edward and said, "Edward, she's not as sweet and harmless as you think."I tried to stand straight, but my knees throbbed, and the sting on my cheek reminded me that the slap had been real.I was about to speak, but Nathan beat me to it."Juliet Davis."His voice was quiet but full of authority."I remember you. You applied for an internship at my fund during the Morgan Stanley summer program. During the second-round group interview, you edited the team project report. You moved your name to the top and degraded your team members' work."Juliet's face turned pale in no time."Am I right?"She opened her mouth, but no words came out.The room fell into complete silence.Edward finally realized Nathan was not just some privileged hedge fund kid.Nathan was the kind of man who remembered a
