Chapter 2

Autor: Bowl of Rice
By the time I brought out the last dish, the three of them were already eating.

Craig and Mom moved the main dishes within Gwen's reach, leaving me with a plate of sautéed vegetables.

I sat down and reached for the pot roast, but Mom slid the platter toward Gwen.

"You've lost weight stressing over retaking the SAT. Have some more."

Craig spooned vegetables onto my plate. "You said you couldn't eat anything spicy. Let Gwen have it."

"I didn't make the pot roast spicy," I said.

However, they kept talking as if I hadn't said a word.

I looked down at my plate and pushed the vegetables aside. I took a bite of mashed potatoes and chewed slowly, trying not to cry.

They started talking about their vacation, from the sunrise over the ocean to the fresh seafood at the waterfront market and the jet ski rides.

Since they went without me, I had nothing to add. I kept my head down and ate, barely tasting the food.

Then Gwen turned to me with a bright smile. "So, Diane, all packed? You're coming along to be my maid!"

I glanced at her. "I'm going to college for computer science, not to clean up after you."

Gwen covered her mouth and laughed, exchanging a look with Craig and Mom.

"Wait, nobody told you?

"You're not leaving for college the day after tomorrow. They already arranged for you to spend another year studying for the SAT with me.

"You'll do my laundry, cook, and organize my notes. You're coming to take care of me."

I set down my fork.

Craig broke the silence.

"Diane, don't get upset. With your grades, you can still get into a top school next year. You'll have plenty of time to study while you help Gwen. Next year, you can both go to college. Wouldn't that be great?"

Mom nodded. "Gwen's like a second daughter to me. Just think of her as your little sister and help her out for a year."

I laughed in disbelief.

"Your grades are good, too, Craig. Why don't you stay with her? And Mom, you're retired. You could take care of my 'little sister.' Why does it have to be me?"

Craig opened his mouth, then shut it. Mom looked away and helped herself to more food. Neither had an answer.

Finally, Craig muttered, "Don't be so selfish, Diane."

I slammed my fork down and grabbed him by the collar, too angry and hurt to hold back.

"I'm selfish? Did either of you even think about what I want? What about my future? Who comes first, Craig? Me or Gwen? Do you even love me anymore?"

He said nothing and wouldn't meet my eyes.

I laughed bitterly and pushed him away, then turned to Mom.

"And you. Is this really about helping Gwen, or is it about you and Asher? You two used to date, didn't you?"

Her gaze shifted. "Who told you that? I lost your father less than six months ago, and now you're throwing accusations at me?"

I scoffed.

"Everyone in the complex is talking about you and Asher. They say you were sneaking around with him while Dad was still alive. Some even think you killed Dad so you could be with him. Maybe…"

Mom slapped me.

"My personal life is none of your business! You're going with Gwen. End of discussion. If you refuse, don't expect anything from me ever again!"

Craig stepped forward to get between us, but I held up a hand to stop him.

I pressed my other hand to my stinging cheek. "Is that what you want, too, Craig?"

He glanced at Gwen, then sighed. "Another year to prepare for college could be good for you, Diane. Please stop making this so hard on us."

Craig caught up and stepped in front of me."I've been trying to find you since I got out. I even contacted your mentor, but she wouldn't tell me where you were. Gwen moved away six years ago. Your mom missed you. And I... I was worried about you."He glanced at my conference badge and managed a weak smile. "You seem to be doing well. I'm glad. Do you think we could…""No," I cut him off. His smile faded."Craig, I moved on."Before I could say more, a middle-aged man hurried over and pulled Craig aside. He turned to me with an apologetic smile."I'm sorry, Dr. Murray. He's new to our sales team. I hope he wasn't bothering you."He turned back to Craig. "What are you doing? Do you know who you're talking to? Let her through!"Craig stood there, too embarrassed to say a word.I turned to his boss. "It's alright. I have another session to get to. Excuse me."I walked past them. Behind me, the man lowered his voice, but I could still hear him."Do you realize who that was

Over the next seven years, I earned my bachelor's degree and stayed on for a PhD under Peyton. I published papers in leading journals, won awards, and became the youngest researcher to lead a team in the lab.One day, I stopped by Peyton's office with the latest issue of a journal. She was looking at the cashmere scarf I bought her the week before."Diane, what did I tell you about spending so much on me? You're making good money now. Put some aside for yourself. I don't need anything this fancy."I smiled and draped the scarf over her shoulders, adjusting the ends. "You deserve something nice. Besides, I plan on having you around for a long time."She gave me an affectionate smile. "You really don't give up, do you?"Then she patted my hand, her expression turning serious. "I've had a job offer back home. I've decided to take it and move back for good. Would you come with me?"I hesitated, and she quickly added, "Only if you want to. You can stay here at the lab. It's your cho

I laughed through my tears, unable to believe Craig was asking this of me."Did you think about our history when you drugged me? When you locked me in my room and walked away while I begged for help? Or when you and my mom canceled my enrollment and left me with nowhere to go?"Craig lowered his head, his shoulders shaking. He reached for my hand, and his tears fell onto my skin."Diane, please. I was wrong. I regret all of it, but you know I cared about you."When you had that fever in eighth grade, I went to the ER with you and stayed all night. "When you were sick, I brought you soup. I went across town every weekend just to pick up cookies from your favorite bakery."He tightened his grip on my hand. "We were happy together. Please don't ruin my life."I stared at his hand around mine. He used to hold my hand on walks through campus and put his jacket around my shoulders when I got cold.He promised to keep me safe for the rest of my life. Then he slipped medication in

I gave Gwen a cold smile. "You offered to pay. If you don't want to, take your chances in court. As far as I'm concerned, 50 grand doesn't begin to make up for what you did."Gwen fell silent.Mom stepped forward, her eyes red. It took her a while to manage an apology."Diane, I was wrong. But calling the police? On your own mother?"Her voice rose, and any trace of remorse disappeared."I worked hard to raise you. Yes, I bought the medication, but I didn't know your allergy was that serious. What will people think when they hear you sent your own mother to prison?"My throat tightened. "You raised me? No, Dad raised me. Did you ever even ask how I was doing? All you cared about was shopping and gambling."When Dad was away on business, I came to you because I was hungry. You wouldn't even give me money to buy food."You slapped me and told me to leave you alone so you could keep playing. You said you already spent enough money on me, then blamed me for losing the game."You

Right then, another officer came over and whispered to the lead officer, who glanced at the three of them."Tell us exactly what happened. Cooperating could help your case."He stepped out with his colleague. The hospital had called with an update: I was awake. My mentor Peyton was the first person I saw. Her eyes filled with tears as she leaned toward me."Hey. You're finally awake."I tried to speak, but my throat was raw. It took a few tries to get the words out."How did you know I was here?"She wiped her eyes and took a breath. "I found out your mom canceled your enrollment. Something didn't feel right, so I went to your apartment. A neighbor told me they locked you in your room and drugged you."Her voice trembled, and she squeezed my hand. "I found out where the ambulance took you and came straight here. I'll help you through this. I promise."Tears ran down my cheeks as I looked at the cast on my leg. "I'm sorry, Dr. Walsh. I don't think I can leave with you yet

Mom, Craig, and Gwen froze as the officers took out their handcuffs."Come with us."Craig stumbled as an officer led him away. Looking back, he saw another officer crouched outside my bedroom, examining the lock. The officer took a few photos, then stood. "It locks from the outside. Looks like they were holding her against her will, too."The lead officer nodded, then turned back to them. "Keep moving."At the station, they sat under harsh fluorescent lights. Gwen turned to Craig. "I thought you took her phone. How did she call the cops?"The officer taking notes looked up. "You took her phone?"He checked the belongings collected from Craig during booking and found it."You took away her only way to call for help," he told Craig. "That could mean another charge."Gwen's eyes widened. She quickly looked down, realizing what she had just admitted.Mom leaned forward. "All he did was take her phone. Since when is that a crime?"She bought it with scholarship money. She wo
