Chapter 1

"Lizzy, everyone else is going home for the study break. If I stay in the dorm alone, I'll be terrified. Can you please take me home with you?"

The moment my roommate Marilyn Jones said those familiar words, a chill shot straight through me.

I took a full step back before I even realized it.

That familiar line, one I knew way too well, made me realize that I had been reborn.

In my previous life, that exact day was when the school dismissed us for the college entrance exam.

Everyone in our dorm left for home except Marilyn, whose family lived way out in the mountains.

She had begged me pitifully to take her home with me. Thinking we had lived together for so long, I figured it would be fine.

My brother, Steve Warren, was sitting for the exam that year, but Marilyn and I were both juniors. She would not be stupid enough to disturb a senior studying for the most important test of his life.

Thus, I brought her home.

Who could have known that that one decision would destroy my entire family?

As soon as we arrived, Marilyn turned on the sweet, well-behaved act, charming my parents until they were grinning ear to ear.

They did not want her to feel slighted, so they gave her the master bedroom and squeezed themselves into the tiny attic.

That very night, she snuck into Steve's room in the dark, and the next morning, a scream tore through the house like a siren.

My parents and I rushed out, only to find Marilyn sobbing away, pointing at Steve, accusing him of assaulting her.

My parents were about to leave to buy groceries, so the front door was wide open. Every neighbor on our floor heard the commotion.

No matter how much we explained, she stuck to her story, insisting Steve had tried to take advantage of her.

By the time Marilyn was done, she had already called the police, and Steve was taken away on the spot.

He missed all three days of the exam.

He was one of the school's top hopefuls for the best universities, but all of that was gone in an instant.

Three days later, he came out of the police station with the exam long over and a forced confession on his record.

Branded a predator he had never been, he was expelled, and not a single nearby school was willing to accept him.

It was then that Marilyn threatened us.

If we did not do whatever she wanted, she would go to my school and announce to everyone that I had a demon for a brother.

For the sake of my future, my parents and Steve swallowed the humiliation and let her move in.

Marilyn forced Steve to drop out and work in a dangerous, illegal factory. Every penny he made went straight to her so she could spend it however she pleased.

My parents became her personal servants. She slapped and scolded them constantly, and every night, she even made them squat by her feet with a washbasin to clean them.

They endured that hell for almost a year, holding on only because my own college entrance exam was nearing.

Then, Steve died. A machine malfunctioned at the factory and crushed him.

When the news reached my parents who were already half-broken by Marilyn's abuse, they seemed to age decades overnight. Soon after, they fell gravely ill and passed away one after another.

The home that used to be warm and full of laughter became nothing but ashes, with only me left standing.

Hatred consumed me.

The night before my exam, I tied Marilyn up and forced her to kneel before the photos of my parents and Steve. Then, I set a fire that took both of us.

However, when I opened my eyes again, I was back on the very day she asked to come home with me.

Hearing the same request, the one that ruined my entire life, I did not hesitate for a second.

I replied coldly, "Sorry. Steve's about to take the college entrance exam. We're not hosting any outsiders."

I held up my phone and said, "Officer, there's a pinhole camera installed by my front door. It clearly recorded Steve leaving the house at 9:30 p.m. the night before the exam, and he never came back after. You can take a look."Then, I pulled up another video. "I also have a clip I filmed from our balcony. It shows Steve walking toward Charles' unit that same night. You can check this one too."The moment they heard what I said and saw what I had, both Charles and Marilyn went pale. The police skimmed through the evidence at lightning speed. "Young woman, why didn't you tell us earlier if you had evidence like this?"I let out a cold laugh."I wanted to reel in the bigger fish. I always thought it was strange. Marilyn barely even knows Steve. How could she possibly hate him enough to ruin herself just to take him down? Turns out, it was all because of you."I jabbed a finger at Charles, my teeth clenched tightly in anger."You conspired with her. You planned this whole thing tog

"Please, sir! Don't do this! Steve worked himself to the bone for over ten years. He's up before dawn every day for his studies, and he's always the last one to leave after school. Everything he's done has been for the chance to get into a good university!""That's right! We know our own child better than anyone. I swear on everything I have that our son is innocent! He's grown up so shy he can't even make eye contact with a girl, let alone... do something like that!"My mom was so frantic she was practically spinning in circles. Then, her legs gave out, and she collapsed to her knees in front of Marilyn."I'm begging you, young lady... Please let Steve go. Whatever you want, our family can give it to you. Please just don't ruin his life!"Watching my mother in tears, Marilyn smirked proudly."Oh, now you regret it? Isn't it a little late for that, Mrs. Warren? Your son did what he did. Nothing will change that fact unless you can prove he wasn't home that night."My mom went lim

I could not shake the feeling that I had seen that guy somewhere before. It did not make sense. Sure, he was one of Steve's closest friends, but he had never visited our house. That should have been our first time meeting, but the more I looked at him, the more familiar he seemed. Before I could figure out why, the police had already stepped forward."This young man, Steve Warren, claims he stayed at your place the night before the exam. You're listed as his witness. Is that true?"Steve immediately jumped in, desperation lined his voice."Charles, hurry and explain it to them. This young woman is about to ruin my entire life!"Charles shot Steve a long, conflicted look.A sinking feeling hit my stomach. Then, he spoke. "Sorry, officer. Steve never came to my place that night. He didn't stay over. I have no idea why he'd say that."Steve froze. "Charles, what are you talking about? We planned it! I knocked on your door, you let me crash for the night, and we went to school to

Marilyn marched in with a whole squad of police officers and pointed straight at Steve. The guests who came for the celebration burst into chatter, their looks toward Steve turning strange. The moment Steve saw her, his anger shot through the roof."It's you again, you vicious woman! I seriously don't know what I've ever done to offend you. Before the college entrance exam, you tried to set me up at my own house, and now, you barge into my celebration just to stir up trouble? How can someone's heart be this rotten?"Steve's eyes were burning red with rage, but Marilyn acted all righteous."Why shouldn't I come? I'm the victim here. Don't I have the right to demand justice?"Steve Warren, you snuck into my room and assaulted me the night before the exam. Your whole family covered for you. Today, I brought the police so they can finally get me justice!"She even squeezed out a few fake tears, looking tragic and indignant. Her words were like a fuse that ignited the bomb in the r

I shot up from bed in an instant. A quick glance at the clock told me it was the exact time my parents usually headed out to buy groceries.Marilyn was standing at Steve's empty doorway, face dark with panic."What's going on? Elizabeth, where's Steve?"Seeing her expression, a bitter laugh echoed in my head, though my face stayed perfectly calm.I replied lightly, "He stayed over at a friend's place last night. Why? What did you need him for?""Stayed over?"She practically snapped at me."That won't work! Damn it! How did I sleep so deeply? What about my plan..."She stopped abruptly, realizing she still had an audience."Will he be back this morning?" she demanded.I shrugged. "Probably not. He'll head to the exam from his friend's house."Marilyn was losing it. Her eyes darted around frantically. Then, she saw my parents getting ready to head out, and the front door was open with neighbors walking past in the hallway. Her eyes lit up like she'd just found salvation."

  • The Girl Who Ruined My Family   Chapter 3

My parents had no idea there was an entire lifetime of hatred between Marilyn and I.The moment Steve introduced her as my best friend, they rushed over to welcome her warmly. My dad even made a special trip to the supermarket and came back with bags of snacks, telling her to help herself and make herself at home.Marilyn did not hold back one bit. She sweet-talked my parents, flattering them until they were beaming with joy.Watching her pretend to be all innocent and grateful made my stomach turn. That night, just like in my previous life, my parents said they wanted to give up their master bedroom for her so she could sleep more comfortably.I noticed her discreetly glancing at the distance between the master bedroom and Steve's room, calculating just like before. My fingers clenched. Then, I stood up and said, "Marilyn, since it's your first night here and you might not be used to the place, I made you a cup of warm milk."I handed her the mug and added casually, "My dad b
