Chapter 4

Autor: Arya Sue
I didn't reply. Instead, I tapped "Leave Group".

Sebastian didn't come through the door until the next afternoon. Noelle and Wade trailed in behind him, all three of them in fresh clothes, not a trace of barbecue smoke or alcohol on any of them.

They all froze for a second when they saw me walk out of the bedroom.

Noelle spoke first. "I asked in the group chat last night what time you were heading over, but you never answered. I figured you'd already gone ahead to the dress shop."

None of them had noticed I'd left the group.

Wade sprawled across the couch. "I was up half the night looking at invitation designs for you two. That dri… that invitation selection is brutal. You guys better give me my own table at the wedding for all this effort."

Noelle laughed and hooked her arm through mine. "Then I'm calling dibs on the bouquet! You'd better aim right at me when you throw it!"

Sebastian smiled as he poured them water. "If you really want it that badly, just have Cece hand it to you."

"No way, I want Cece to throw it to me herself!"

The three of them went back and forth, the picture of warmth and ease, as if the four of us really were as close as we'd ever been. Only I knew that all of it was fake. The only life they actually wanted was the one without me in it.

I went back to the bedroom and gathered my passport, my ID, and my visa paperwork. When I wheeled my suitcase out, the living room was already empty.

A text from Sebastian popped up on my phone. "Noelle was dying to see the new dresses, so we went ahead. Just grab a cab and meet us there."

They weren't dying to see dresses. They just thought the car ride was more comfortable without me.

I looked around the empty bedroom and smiled, the kind that came with letting go. "Okay."

After the cab dropped me at the airport, two more messages from Sebastian came through. The first was a photo of Noelle wearing my dress, beaming at the camera.

"You were taking too long, so I let Noelle try it on for you. Wade and Noelle both think the second one looks better, so we're going with that."

I didn't reply. I deleted Sebastian from my contacts.

Since he needed everything to be the "right fit" so badly, then a life without me was the most fitting thing I could give him.

I put my phone away and walked toward the international departures check-in.

On the way home, Sebastian's phone kept buzzing with messages from the "No Cecilia Ward Today" group.

Noelle sounded surprised. "Seriously? Cece was actually throwing a fit at you last night?"

Wade replied, "Doesn't she usually do whatever you say? How bad was it that she's talking about calling off the engagement? Was it pre-wedding jitters?"

Sebastian sent a voice message while he drove. "Who knows with her. She's been making a fuss over nothing lately."

Noelle laughed. "Good thing you can vent about it in here. If Cece ever found out what you say about her behind her back, she'd really call off the wedding."

Wade cracked up. "You think she wouldn't be mad about what we've been saying too? Can't help it though, we're just telling the truth. And she's so sensitive about everything anyway.

"Alright, alright, you're almost home, aren't you? Let's drop it before Cece sees."

The group went quiet. Sebastian turned off his phone screen and unlocked the front door.

He kicked off his shoes and called out, "Why didn't you answer my texts? What did you think of the dress?"

No one answered. Sebastian looked up, and something about the apartment felt hollow.

"Cece?" He walked further inside, frowning. "Why aren't you answering me? What's the attitude about this time? Is it because we didn't take you along today? You were the one being slow."

He shoved the bedroom door open, and it was empty. The only thing left was his tablet, sitting on the bed.

The screen was unlocked, still open to the three-person group chat called "No Cecilia Ward Today", messages scrolling quietly down the screen.

  • The Group Chat That Ended Us   Chapter 11

Sebastian ended up renting a short-term place nearby and didn't leave.I didn't ask why he was still in the country, and I didn't care how long his visa would hold out. Every day, he showed up outside my apartment building, or in front of my office, or at the grocery store I always went to.Sometimes he tried to talk to me, and sometimes he just stood at a distance. I ignored him every single time.Sonia asked me who the man was."No idea," I said. "Probably a lost tourist."A month and a half later, Sebastian finally stopped showing up. I assumed he'd come to his senses and gone home.I found out later that it was because Wade had gotten into serious trouble. His father's company was under investigation for financial crimes, and the entire business had been frozen.Every property, car, and bank account under Wade's name was seized overnight. He went from a trust-fund kid who spent money like water to someone buried in debt with nothing to his name.Sebastian had to fly back to

Sebastian quickly said, "I shouldn't have said those things. I shouldn't have let them talk about you like that. I—""You've apologized plenty of times," I cut in.He looked up at me, confusion in his eyes."Every time you forgot my birthday, you apologized. Every time you bailed on me at the last minute, you apologized. Every time you let Noelle take my place, you apologized."You always sounded so sincere about it, and every single time, I believed you. But you never once actually changed."You never thought there was anything wrong with what you were doing. You just didn't like seeing me upset. As long as I said 'it's fine,' you could go right back to what you were doing with a clear conscience."I paused and looked him straight in the eye. "This time, I don't want to say it's fine."Sebastian was completely speechless. He stood there, his lips moving without making a sound, his eyes growing redder by the second. It was a long time before he managed to get anything out. "Then

"Sebastian." I cut him off.My voice was so quiet it nearly got lost in the wind."Do you think I left because I was throwing a tantrum?"He went still."Do you think the reason I haven't contacted you in months is that I've been waiting for you to come find me?"He didn't answer, but the look on his face said everything. That was exactly what he thought. He thought I was sulking, that I'd eventually get over it.He assumed that if he flew all the way out here and humbled himself enough to ask me to come back, I'd nod and say "okay" the way I always did.I shifted the grocery bag to my other hand and took a long breath. "Sebastian, do you remember your last birthday?"He hadn't expected me to bring that up. It took him a second before he said, "Yeah.""I got up at 6:00 am to make you breakfast. You said you needed to go pick up Wade and Noelle and told me to meet you all at the restaurant on my own. You were two hours late."His expression shifted."When I got to the restaur

My new social circle was slowly taking shape. There was a woman at the office named Sonia Decker who struck up a conversation with me on my very first day."You're the one who got sent over straight from headquarters? That's amazing. I looked through your portfolio and your design style is really unique. A few of us are planning to check out the flea market this weekend if you want to come."I started eating lunch with them and talking shop about design. The days blurred together, and I rarely thought about Sebastian. Or maybe it was more accurate to say I made a deliberate effort not to.Every once in a while, late at night when everything was quiet, I'd lie there staring at the ceiling and let the memories drift back.I'd think about how he scoured every store in the city to track down that out-of-print art book when he was first pursuing me, or how we used to sit on the campus lawn on warm evenings in college and he'd tell me he was going to marry me after graduation.I'd remem

In those ten days, I hadn't sent him a single message or made a single call. He'd messaged me on every social media account I had, and none of them went through. He tried calling me from a new number, and I let it ring once before hanging up and blocking that one too. He tried going through friends to reach my dad, and my dad gave the same answer every time. "Cece will come home when she's ready."During all of this, Noelle put on a bigger show of concern than anyone, checking in with Sebastian almost every day for updates."What is Cece's problem? If something's wrong, why can't she just talk about it like a normal person instead of making everyone worry?"Sebastian, you've done everything you can. She's the one who won't pick up or text back. That's not on you."Don't be so hard on yourself. She'll probably come around after a few months overseas."One day Sebastian suddenly looked up at her and asked, "Why did she block all three of us?"Noelle's expression stiffened for a se

Sebastian didn't answer. He just flipped the tablet over and set it facedown on the nightstand. That night, he called every friend we had in common. He tried my dad's place too.My dad picked up and said flatly, "Whatever Cece decides is her business."Then he hung up. That was how he found out Dad had known about my decision to leave all along and hadn't tried to stop me.The next day, Sebastian went to my office. Someone in HR told him I'd submitted my resignation a month ago and that my exit paperwork had been finalized the previous week.He didn't believe it and insisted they check again. The HR manager, visibly annoyed, pulled up the system records and showed him. The submission date was right there in black and white, from one month ago.A month ago, while he'd been huddled in the group chat with Noelle and Wade figuring out where to go drinking that weekend, I'd been finishing my resignation. While he was complaining about me "making a fuss over nothing", I was applying f
