Chapter 2

Penulis: Point Cheetah
The moment the punishment was handed down, the entire courtyard fell into silence.

Anyone with eyes could see there had been something wrong with the bow Amelia had given me. But no one was willing to stand up for an illegitimate daughter.

An attendant brought over a cane. Slowly, I raised my palm which was still dripping with blood. Out of the corner of my eye, I glanced at Glenn, hoping that the sight of blood would make him see the truth.

Instead, Amelia pouted, her eyes red. "I scraped my wrist when I drew the bow just now. Professor Howard, will you blow on it for me?"

While he blew on the faintest reddened mark on her skin, the cane struck directly across my wound.

Red filled my vision. I endured the pain silently and left without saying a single word. Later, I bandaged the wound and pulled my sleeve down to hide it.

That afternoon, the first lecture was Glenn's class. Despite my reluctance, I still went. After all, he was a respected scholar, and his lessons were genuinely beneficial.

At worst, I could just forget the past and think of him as my future brother-in-law.

Once seated, I resumed my usual composure. I listened in class and took notes. After class ended, I was called over by the headmaster.

"Victoria, I know you've been bullied a few times. My authority only extends so far, but I can offer you a position as a librarian."

Headmaster Whittaker had once been Glenn's tutor. He had watched me grow up. Now, his hair was completely grey, and his eyes carried a trace of helplessness toward his former pupil, and deep guilt toward me.

I shook my head and smiled. "I'm fine. Thank you for the opportunity, Headmaster Whittaker."

I no longer cared about Glenn. But I was grateful to Headmaster Whittaker. He knew how much I loved books and had found a way for me to remain in Imperial Academy.

Walking back, my steps felt lighter. The dread of being forced to leave in seven days had faded.

A librarian was a modest position, but it was still an official post.

For the next two days, I avoided Glenn's lectures and holed myself up in the library.

Perhaps Amelia had grown bored or learned that I was still allowed to remain at the academy. She came to me, furious, pulled several books from the shelves, and began tearing them apart.

"Victoria, don't think you can stay here and continue seducing Glenn!"

Her eyes blazed with anger as she ripped through several priceless, one-of-a-kind books. Those were also Glenn's favorite books.

As expected, I soon saw him hurrying over after hearing the commotion. Amelia instantly rubbed her eyes, picked up the torn pages, and burst into tears.

"Victoria, if you're upset and want to avoid Professor Howard's lectures, that's fine. But why did you have to destroy his precious books?"

I said nothing. But beside me, a library assistant slammed the table angrily and roared, "Nonsense! You tore those books yourself! I heard you threatening Victoria and telling her she wasn't allowed to stay here!"

This time, there was a witness. So, I said calmly, "It wasn't me."

I thought Glenn might be fair for once.

But Amelia sniffled. "You're both working together. Of course you would say that."

Just like that, Glenn's expression hardened. "Why would Amy frame you?"

In his eyes, I was an illegitimate daughter that possessed nothing worth envying, and nothing worth plotting against.

Touching the ruined books, he looked at me with cold disappointment. "If you can't perform your duties as librarian well, then you should give up the position."

With just one sentence, my last chance to remain at Imperial Academy vanished.

"Glenn?" My voice was weak, and my eyes uncontrollably filled with tears.

The library assistant tried to protest again, only to be stripped of his own post as well.

"You will no longer return to Imperial Academy."

The young man's face turned deathly pale. For the past two days, he had laughed and chatted with me. Now, he gave a bitter laugh, tossed down the book in his hands, and walked away.

"Everyone says Professor Howard is a righteous man of integrity. Seeing him now, I guess they were mistaken."

He strode off without looking back. Then, halfway to the door, he turned to me and asked, "Are you coming?"

With my fingers curled tightly at my sides, I shook my head. "No."

My chance to stay was gone. The least I could do was cherish my final days here, right?

Besides, there was no point demanding an explanation from Glenn anymore.

When Glenn awoke again, his head was splitting, and every muscle ached. The next second, his entire body went rigid and cold.Beside him lay Amelia, unclothed, tears still fresh upon her face as she feigned distress.Suddenly, frantic footsteps echoed outside. Penelope stormed in with a crowd of relatives and household staff, catching the pair together in bed.The evidence was undeniable. There was no room for explanation.Penelope immediately demanded that Glenn marry Amelia to officiate their relationship.Glenn closed his eyes, feeling nothing but cold disgust. He knew he had fallen into Amelia's trap once again. But left with no choice, he reluctantly agreed to the marriage.Half a month later, Glenn coldly brought Amelia into his household as his wife. There were no decorations, no wedding party, and no guests. On their wedding night, he never returned to their room. Instead, he sat alone in his study, drinking late into the night, one glass after another. His eyes were emp

After breaking off the engagement to Amelia, Glenn immediately retrieved the gold locket, the token of love he had given me years ago.The metal was smooth and warm, just like how our relationship used to be. Yet now, holding it in his palm, it felt burning hot.He dared not imagine how humiliated and devastated I must've felt when I was forced to surrender it. He dared not think about the countless nights I had spent studying, fighting desperately to protect our engagement, only for him to destroy every hope I had, one act of favoritism at a time. Now, regret consumed him. The pain was unbearable.Sitting alone by the window, staring into the cold moonlit night, he finally made up his mind. The day I was appointed to my official post, dawn had barely broken. Glenn was already waiting outside the Belgrave residence, blocking me before I departed for the palace. As my carriage set off, he followed closely behind. His voice was hoarse with remorse as he spoke. "Vic, I know I was wr

News that Prince Colin had stood from his wheelchair during the return visit swept through Emberwood overnight. The entire city was in uproar. People said that while Professor Howard was a refined gentleman and the most respected scholar in Emberwood, he was hardly worth mentioning compared to a powerful prince who was healthy and heroic. They remarked that Amelia had traded a fortune for a handful of coins. When those comparisons reached the Ashworth residence, Amelia was completely enraged. She locked herself in the room and smashed everything within reach. Shattered porcelain lay on the ground, reflecting the twisted ferocity on her face."Wasn't I told he'd been crippled for years, and that he was barely hanging on and wouldn't live much longer? Why? Why does that illegitimate daughter Victoria have such good luck?"She screamed as tears streamed down her face, consumed by jealousy and resentment.Seeing her daughter on the verge of hysteria, Penelope hurried forward to comfor

Glenn froze where he stood, disbelief written all over his face. His chest felt uncomfortably tight, and the numbing pain spread through every part of him. Before he could even recover from the shock, Father and Penelope approached with eager smiles. They were far too enthusiastic. Taking one of his arms each, they ushered him inside, their voices dripping with flattery."Please come in, Professor Howard. We've prepared the finest tea just for you."Distracted and dazed, Glenn allowed himself to be led to the main seat. He had barely opened his mouth when Father eagerly spoke about the wedding first."Professor Howard, Penelope and I have reached a decision. What do you think about setting your wedding to Amelia on the 15th of this month?"Penelope quickly chimed in. "Amelia is the eldest daughter of the Ashworth family. It wouldn't look good for her to marry too long after her younger sister. People would talk."Each word struck Glenn hard in the heart. His chest felt empty, lik

Three days passed in the blink of an eye.Preparations for the Lights Festival were already underway throughout the city. Twinkling lights lined the streets, their golden glow filling the city with warmth and splendor. After spending days at Amelia's side, Glenn finally remembered the promise he had left forgotten. He purchased the most exquisite lantern he could find. Then, gripping the lantern handle, he made his way to the confinement room with quick steps. He was certain I would be waiting for him there. He had even pictured the meeting in his mind—he'd explain everything gently to me, then place the lantern in my hands. He thought that as long as he fulfilled his promise, I'd be overjoyed and forgive him.But when he opened the door, the confinement room was completely empty and eerily silent. Dust drifted through the rays of fading lights. There was no sign of me anywhere.Glenn's expression darkened instantly. In a fit of rage, he grabbed the warden by the collar and dema

After sending Amelia home, Glenn came to find me, his clothes still damp from the lake."Amy is the eldest daughter of the family. She has her pride. Vic, can't you be a little more accommodating toward her?"I agreed without hesitation, my expression calm. "Alright."After all, the man I would ultimately marry had never been him.Seeing the faint smile on my lips and the anger gone from my face, he let out a breath of relief and said, "Don't worry. Even if you enter my household as my other woman, I would never allow you to be mistreated."With that, he hurried away with the medicine he had prepared, rushing off to Amelia's place.I remained where I stood, watching his retreating figure. Memories from more than a decade surfaced one after another. It was then I suddenly realized that all these years, I had always been the one waiting.I waited for him to finish his studies. I waited for him to fulfill his promise to bring me into Imperial Academy. I waited for him to marry me a
