The private residence was quiet in the way only heavily guarded places could be.

Too quiet.

No staff chatter.

No distant traffic.

Just the soft hum of climate control and the faint echo of footsteps as Damian was wheeled inside.

They had placed Nikolai in one of the guest bedrooms overlooking the lake. Curtains half drawn. Morning light just beginning to glow silver over the water.

Damian gestured for his men to stop at the doorway.

“I’ll go in alone,” he said.

They hesitated.

Then stepped back

Damian Blackwell had been staring at a wall, lost in thought, replaying the same conversation with Dr. Morozov in his head, weighing options, calculating timelines. Then he felt it.That sensation again. The unmistakable awareness of being looked at.He turned. And saw him.The boy stood near the reception desk, keys dangling from his hand, eyes wide with recognition and something dangerously close to hurt.Damian’s chest tightened violently.Nikolai.The sound of his name echoed in Damian’s head like a physical blow.Nikolai’s breath caught. It was him.Not a thought. Not a maybe. Not a silence.Him.The man who hadn’t answered. The man he thought had left. The man he’d spent the entire night convincing himself he didn’t matter to.His fingers tightened around the keyring until the metal bit into his skin.Damian’s lips parted slightly.“Nikolai...”The boy took a step back.Just one.His eyes filled too quickly, confusion and relief crashing together in a way he didn’t know how to h

The operating room was a world unto itself.Bright. Sterile. Focused.Sera stood at the center of it, scrubbed in, shoulders relaxed in that precise way they always were when her mind locked into purpose. Her hands moved with calm authority, instruments passed to her without a word needing to be spoken. Every motion was deliberate. Every decision measured. On the other side of the glass, Nikolai sat on the tall observation stool, chin resting in his palms, eyes glued to the controlled ballet unfolding below. At first, he was fascinated. He watched the monitors. The steady rhythm of the heart rate. The way his mother spoke, firm but never rushed. The way the room responded to her like she was the axis everything revolved around. That was his mom.The best.He felt proud watching her. Safe. But fascination, for a six year old, had a limit.Minutes stretched. Then more minutes. The surgery was complex. Methodical. Not dramatic enough to hold a child’s attention forever. The excitement du

The jet touched down smoothly, tires kissing the runway with practiced precision.Damian barely felt it.Before the engines had fully powered down, his phone was already in his hand, the work device this time, messages flooding in the moment signal returned. Confirmations. Clearances. Updates. All the usual noise that followed him wherever he went.He ignored most of it.“Car’s ready,” his head of security said quietly.Damian nodded. “Hospital first.”No detours. No rest.No settling in.The convoy moved through Moscow with silent efficiency, black vehicles cutting through traffic like they belonged to the city itself. Damian watched the streets pass by from the back seat, his reflection faint in the tinted glass. Snow lined the roads, piled neatly at the edges, the city moving with a rhythm that felt foreign and familiar all at once.Dr. Sera Voss worked here. The thought surfaced unbidden. Not as emotion. Not as memory. As fact. The hospital rose ahead of them, all glass and steel

Nikolai's arms tightened around her, like he was afraid to let go.She held him, steady and quiet, while her mind waged a war she refused to acknowledge out loud.Because somewhere, deep down, a dangerous thought flickered despite her resolve. That Damian was hurting too. That he was not the man he had been. That he might never be.She pushed it away immediately.Sympathy was a door she could not afford to open. She had escaped once. She would not risk her son by stepping back into a life that had already taken too much from her.Sera stayed there on the bed with Nikolai until his breathing evened out completely, until the tension eased from his small frame.Only then did she allow herself to exhale. And even then, Damian Blackwell’s name lingered in the back of her mind like a pulse she refused to check.Later that day, the living room glowed softly with afternoon light, curtains half drawn, the television casting moving colors across the walls.Nikolai sat curled into the corner of

Sera sat on the edge of the bed, studying his face the way she studied patients when something didn’t add up. His eyes weren’t glassy. His breathing wasn’t labored. His posture wasn’t defensive.Physically, he was fine.Which meant this wasn’t physical.“Did you sleep,” she asked. He hesitated. Then nodded. “Yeah.”That hesitation told her everything and nothing.Sera exhaled slowly, forcing herself to soften. “Talk to me.”“I’m okay,” he repeated, but his voice cracked just enough to give him away. She reached out, brushing his hair back gently. “You don’t sound okay.”He swallowed. She waited. The silence stretched, fragile. Finally, Nikolai turned fully toward her and did something he hadn’t done in a long time.He reached for her.Wrapped his arms around her middle and pressed his face into her side, holding on tightly, like he was afraid she might move.Sera’s breath caught. She pulled him closer instantly, one arm around his shoulders, the other resting protectively on his back.

A tear slipped out before he could stop it, soaking into the pillow. He scrubbed at his face angrily, embarrassed even though no one was watching.“Stupid,” he muttered. “You’re stupid.”He reached for the phone again, hesitated, then set it back down. He didn’t want to bother Damian. What if calling again just proved he was clingy? The thought made his chest ache even more.He curled in on himself, arms wrapped tight around his middle, trying to make himself smaller, quieter, easier to forget. He hadn’t realized when it happened. When the calls stopped feeling like a fun secret and started feeling like something he needed. When Damian stopped being just a friend and became… steady. Constant. Someone he expected to be there the same way he expected the sun to rise. That realization scared him.He sniffed quietly, staring at the dark room.“I won’t do it again,” he whispered, not sure who he was promising. “I’ll be better.”The phone stayed silent.Outside, the city lights glowed faint
