Marine psychology.
I was doing two majors in college: Marine Biology and Business. The Business major was studies to prepare me to take over the family business, my Dad's company. Marine Biology was to help me understand marine life. This was my Mom's idea. It was either I learned about it in college or she would have sent me to the ocean to be a 'real' prince.
Regardless of the extra push from my parents regarding my education choices, I was an excellent student. Straight A student. Unlike my friends, I had a photographic memory. I could read a passage in the morning and remember it three months later. Mom said it was because of who I was: a part of her mer-family. According to her, mer-folks mentally soaked up anything and everything. Therefore, I had never failed a course before.

When I was not enjoying the privacy of the cave, my next best place to go was Marine Park. Something about this place calmed me. Mom often said it was because of marine life. More days than some I believed her. Other than the fact the animals were annoying, they were great to talk with. They had the weirdest pieces of advice no human would ever think of. All in all, this place was cool-ish.Therefore, whenever I had assignments this place was the first on my trip to gaining an A+. The tranquility and inspiration this place had to offer worked like a charm. I would sit on the cushioned seat across from the displays of sea creatures. Once my book was out, words started flowing. The after effect would be an A+. Well, that was before I stepped foot in Professor Saunder's class.Three minutes into my quiet time and my cell phone rang. With all that was g
Alex flashed me a bright, yet uncertain smile. "GPS."I sat staring at him. Why didn't I think of that? My phone was still on.Son of a bitch!"What'd you want?" I inquired through gritted teeth. Two tiny lines pinched between Little Miss Mermaid's eyebrows. Her pink lips tightened. If it wasn't for Alex staring at my assignment paper, I would have thought she was glaring at me."You got another C?" he asked, avoiding the question.I sighed, and stuffed the papers in my backpack, crushing them in the process."Yeah," I murmured. "That bitch is trying to destroy my life. We had sex once, and she
Rules were implemented for a reason. Sometimes we also disobeyed them. Why? More times breaking them meant freedom, and freedom was what we desired. This was not so with Alex. He wanted to break the rules to help. Yet, no one saw it that way. He and Sophie had been arguing for quite some time. Though their voices were lowered, and they were no longer the cynosure of the room, their body languages said it all. And, by the clenched jaws, and flushed faces, we would be here for a little longer. The prince had left them and went into the tunnel-like structure of the glass place. When I went to peek at him, he was sitting on the floor. He fit in with the beauty of this place. It was as if we were under the ocean. However, if I could remember correctly, the creation called glass protected us from the water. Sea creatures of various kinds were swimming on both sides of the glass and above us. It was magical
Why must you always try to ruin my life?" I tossed my backpack on the countertop in the kitchen.Shelly didn't lift her eyes from the pot of sauce she was stirring on the stove. I slid on a stool around the island."Is this the part where I would say, I don't know what you're talking about?" Her words sounded more of a tease than anything else.I glared at her back. "I'm talking about Alex. You—"She cut off my sentence when she pivoted on her heel with a large wooden spoon held out to me. She came closer to me with, "Taste this."Instead of demanding an answer to my question, I did what she asked and tasted her stupid sauce. A sweet yet tangy flavor spread across my tongue. I nodded and she narr
Sure, if my home was being attacked, my parents would want me to be safe. They would send someone to take care of me. I was healthy and fine. Yet, I had a Guardian with me. All the time. It was infuriating. What was so different about this princess? It took a few minutes before Shelly answered with a, "I don't know why they sent her without protection. It's not the norm. I plan on finding out when I get to the Kingdom."We needed answers. I deserved to know how much trouble this princess was getting my family into."Good," I blew out.Shelly leaned against the sink and observed the ceiling. This was her 'something was up' stance. Whatever it was, I hoped it wasn't too disastrous. If anything, and it was serious, it would give the king another reas
"You know, I'm going to have to get you home before Prince finishes his class, right?" Alex expressed while paying keen attention to the stretch before us called a road."I know," was my grumbled response. The prince didn't seem much like a nice guy. Sure, he cared for his people, but his colleagues were left behind in his selfishness.I shared my concern with Alex, but he just kept on urging me to hold off on any feelings and try to get to know the prince before I judge him. What more was there to know?I even tried mentioning that the prince deliberately kept touching Sophia when it was obvious Alex wasn't comfortable with it. There was so much evidence that pointed to the fact that Alex had some kind of affection for Sophia.
The ringtone from my cell phone blasted through the room. It had for the past few minutes. There was a part of me who wanted to watch it ring without picking it up. The other part, the obedient son, knew the consequences of neglecting his mother’s call. She was a crazy person. This was the main reason she never rang more than twice. The first would be considered as a missed call. The second would be intentional, not even if it was not. Mom was never the person to piss off. If anyone thought my temper was bad, my mother’s was worse. And unlike me, she didn’t care.I vacuumed a nostril of sea air for courage and answered the phone, hoping my voice sounded and my face appeared chirpy enough. “Hi, Mom. How's the city life?”I forced a smile. Mom had a motherly sixth sense to know when things were going to shit. She often video calls to let me know she knew everything was going on in my life despite her location. Those calls were happenin
Sophie and Alex didn’t take long to get here. When the two mermaids were on their way out to the pool. I intercept them in the kitchen. Unlike usual, Shelly was dressed in the same thing Little Miss Mermaid was adorned in: shorts and a tank top. Shelly’s light blue matched Little Mermaid’s black. They looked as if they were more going down a runway rather than practicing anything that had to do with combat. I cleared my throat. “I’ve decided it’s good that all of you practice together.”Sophie and Alex’s eyes widened. Shelly gave me a smug look. Of course, she would. She was the one who placed the wheels in motion.“You changed your mind?” the mermaid asked. The surprise in her voice did not go unnoticed.“Yeah,” I answered, trying to keep my eyes away from her. “You were right, Alex. It’s better we are able to keep each other safe. The only way you guys
