Seraphina’s POV

I still couldn’t figure it out.

Why did Diantha suddenly tear apart the fragile illusion of our relationship?

She’d known about my connection to Ambrosius for a long time. She knew my surname. She knew what I was. Even if she really saw me as nothing more than “the orphan of a fallen house,” for someone like her—who thrived on appearances and subtle power plays—picking a public fight made no sense.

Especially not as a member of House Tianling, which currently owed allegiance to the Riddle family.

Unless… someone put her up to it.

“Linnea,” I said, recounting the events after our training session, “what’s going on with the Tianling family?”

She looked up from the armchair where she had been curled up with a book. Her steel-gray eyes first filled with curiosity—then slowly darkened with tension.

“What happened?”

  • The Last Moonbane   A Pause in the Game

Seraphina’s POVThere’s a silence that settles after everything loud has ended. Not the comforting kind, but the kind that makes you realize how much was left unsaid.Final exams had concluded two days ago. As expected, both Stephen and I passed with top marks. The academy halls were finally quiet—tense with the hush of departure. Some students lingered for farewells, but most had already vanished into carriages, shadows, and portals.Stephen and I traveled back together to Moonbane Manor. Our arrival was understated. No grand fanfare, no lined-up staff. That was never our way. We didn’t need ceremony. The weight of the bloodline was ceremony enough. It had only been a year since I left for Loisage. And yet, as we passed through the long-shadowed courtyards and silent marble corridors, something in me tensed—as if I were a guest, not an heir. The stone paths, the high arches, the quiet moonlit chambers… they were unchanged. But I wasn’t.I had left this place as a daughter of legacy.

  • The Last Moonbane   The Investigation (2)

Seraphina’s POVHer laugh was genuine. “Ambrosius is handsome, isn’t he?”“You talk about him more than I do,” I muttered.“Perhaps I simply enjoy his effect on you.”I rolled my eyes, but I let the topic drop. That was enough for now.Helena had confirmed what I needed: Moonshadow stones had once been ours—and still were, in great quantities. Other families had them, yes, but none possessed the volume or quality Moonbane did. What the Riddle family had seized was only a fraction, taken during a vulnerable moment in our history. But it was my family’s legacy nonetheless.Which led me back to her.Diantha.Because that ring she wore—the one she flaunted like some gaudy trophy—wasn’t just Moonshadow stone. It was Moonbane-crafted.I knew it the moment I saw the pattern etched beneath the setting. Three crescent moons and a silver wolf's tooth inlaid at the base. No merchant carried that sigil. No outsi

  • The Last Moonbane   The Investigation (1)

Seraphina’s POVDiantha’s jewelry wasn’t just a personal preference—it was a puzzle piece. One of many. But behind it, there had to be something more. Something deeper. Something dangerous.I didn’t know what it was yet. But that was fine.Because I could find out.I wasn’t the kind of person who confronted problems head-on—at least not until I understood their shape, their pressure points, their cracks. Diantha was careless in the way only the protected could be. That meant someone was protecting her. Or supplying her. Or both. And that meant a thread to follow.I started with Linnea. Quiet, precise Linnea, who could pass through the academy like a breeze through trees—felt but rarely seen. I asked her for background, for names, for patterns in the Tianling family’s sudden rise. I gave her a month. She promised to be subtle. While she worked the outside, I worked from within.Helena wasn’t a lead in the case—I would never place her in that position. She was family. And you don’t drag

  • The Last Moonbane   The Anomaly (2)

Seraphina’s POVDiantha was always adorned in an array of lavish jewelry—rings, bracelets, brooches that shimmered in the light. At first, I didn’t think much of it. Our kind—noble bloodlines—had easy access to wealth. And even though the Tianling family was technically new, rising into the elite circles only in the last decade, it wasn’t impossible for them to have some precious heirlooms. But this much? And this specific? No.The sheer number of enchanted items she wore—subtle, but unmistakably potent—was alarming. One or two, maybe. But Diantha was practically walking around in a portable armory of magic-imbued jewelry. It didn’t add up.When I asked Linnea about it in passing, she confirmed my suspicions.“The Tianling family’s only been on the rise for the last ten years,” she said, lowering her voice. “Before that, they were unknowns. Mid-level merchants at best.”“And now they’re dressing their daughters in artifact-grade jewelry?” I raised an eyebrow.“Exactly,” she replied. “

  • The Last Moonbane   The Anomaly (1)

Seraphina’s POVIn the days that followed the confrontation, the line between Diantha and me was no longer just drawn—it was carved deep, hard and permanent. The pretense was gone. She stopped hiding her disdain, glaring at me with undisguised hatred, every glance laced with poison. But she didn't act.Because she feared me.Or more precisely, she feared what I might do.I didn’t retaliate directly. That would’ve been too obvious, too satisfying. Instead, I did something far more effective—I played the part of the wounded, jealous girl. With a carefully frustrated tone, I wrote a letter to Ambrosius. In it, I complained about Diantha, hinted at her spite, and made it clear I believed she was envious—especially of the bond between me and Ambrosius. I even went as far as suggesting that the Tianling family should be held accountable for her behavior. It wasn’t my usual style, no. But I had no intention of being taken seriously.Because I suspected that letter would never reach him.And

  • The Last Moonbane   The Conflict (3)

Seraphina’s POV“About this mutual enemy of Ambrosius and me—how much can you tell me?”She didn’t answer right away.Instead, she returned to the armchair and folded her legs beneath her, thoughtful. “There’s more than one,” she said finally. “But if you’re asking who could’ve encouraged Diantha to act the way she did… I have a few names.”I sat across from her, trying not to let my impatience show.“Start with the most likely.”Linnea nodded. “Ever heard of Corwin Riddle?”I frowned. The name was vaguely familiar. “His uncle?”“Second uncle. Ambrosius’s father’s side. Technically still part of the main family, but politically distant. He’s part of the Elders’ Circle now—youngest ever appointed, but not for lack of ambition. He’s always resented Ambrosius’s ris
