LOGINThe sunlight was warm against my face. I squirmed and turned around, hugging my pillow to my face. A crease formed on my brow and I opened my eyes to the unfamiliar room. It took a few seconds before the memories hit me.
The wedding.
I sat up at a shocking speed. The realization dawning on me. My parents will not let this go. I looked around the room, I could hear Leo’s collar jingling faintly from somewhere in the house.
What am I going to do from now on?
My gaze drifted to the drawer beside me. A brand new phone box sat there untouched. I blinked confusedly, that wasn’t there when I went to bed.
I slid out my legs from under the covers and pulled on Mikhail’s sweater. I took it off before I went to bed because I thought it might make me sweat.
I hope he didn’t see me bare. The covers were up when I woke up.
Quietly, I opened the bedroom door. The only noises I heard was the sound of a ball bouncing and Leo running around. When I got to the living room, the door was open. Mikhail sat on the couch and absentmindedly tossing a tennis ball to the porch for Leo to fetch and bring back.
He looked back as I entered and gave me a nod of acknowledgement.
“You’re up.”
I rubbed my hands together awkwardly. “Yeah. What time is it?”
“It’s pass noon,”
My eyebrows rose in shock. “You didn’t wake me?” I’ve never sleep that late. My parents wouldn’t allow that.
“I figured you needed the rest.” His dog returned with the ball in its mouth and jumped on the couch next to him.
I felt awkward standing there and just played with my fingers so I wouldn’t feel completely weird. “I saw the phone. You really didn’t have to do that.”
He gave a one-shoulder shrug while tapping on his phone with one hand and petting with the other. “I figured it was better in case I needed to reach you.”
“Still… thank you.” I said looking down.
He turned to look at me again and I found myself feeling extremely shy. “Um… I want to take a shower. But… I don’t have any clothes.”
Without a word he stood up and walked into his bedroom. That’s the only place in his house I haven’t been to. I wonder what it looks like, no doubt it’ll resemble him.
A minute later, he returned with a stack of clothes. Sweatpants, a black t-shirt, and a hoodie that looked like it could swallow me whole. And I thought the one I was already wearing was big enough.
I smiled gratefully as I received them. As I turned to head to the bathroom he casually added, “I can take you to the mall later. For clothes. If you’d like.”
I paused and looked over my shoulder.
“That will be really nice. And maybe we could get something for Leo too.” I said, eyeing the dog who was now lounging on the rug with zero dignity.
Mikhail smirked a little. “He is spoiled enough.”
With that, I disappeared into the bathroom with the clothes in hand. My heart seems to feel light when I’m talking with him. He makes me forget my problems for a little while.
It felt nice to take a hot shower. Maybe a little too hot, steam filled up the whole room. I towel dried my hair and slipped into the oversized clothes Mikhail gave me.
The waistband folded awkwardly with the drawstring pulled tight. The hem of the pants pooled around my ankles.
I caught my reflection in the mirror and sighed. I look so different now, dare I say, I look more me?
Will my parents ever forgive me? I hated the fact that they dictated every aspect of my life but I still love them.
I stepped back into the living room. Mikhail was in the kitchen going through some more shopping bags. He had his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing a tattoo I hadn’t noticed before on his forearm. It looked like a letter.
I stared at it for a moment longer than I should have and he caught me staring.
His gaze dropped to the way too-long pants and hoodie that hid my hands.
“You look ridiculous.”
I was taken aback at his comment. “Thank you.” I rolled my eyes.
“I meant it in a good way,” he said. “You look like you’re being swallowed alive.”
“I kinda am,” I giggled and tugged at the hem. “But it’s cozy so I like it.”
He looked at me again, like, really looked before dipping his hand in the bag and pulling something out. “Here,” he handed me a brush.
“I don’t know much about makeup and styling but I know you need this much.”
I stared at the brand-new brush, in the color cyan, my favorite color actually. Something about him remembering little things, is hitting harder than expected.
“Thank you,”
He nodded like it wasn’t a big deal but it meant a whole lot to me. I watched him for a second, wondering why I’m even here. I know I shouldn’t but I wanted to know.
“Mikhail… that baby room.” he froze, just for a second but he wasn’t expecting it. “I found it when I was looking around-”
“It’s nothing. It was like that when I bought the place from the owners. Forget you saw that.”
I didn’t press about it further, the tone of his voice made that clear. I don’t want to make him uncomfortable with me. I combed through my hair, it was still damp. Leo was by the door, snoring without a care in the world.
I wanted to help him but when I took a step, I stepped on the hem of the pants and almost went face first into the tile floor. He wasn’t close to me but still somehow managed to grab my wrist and pull me so my face hovered over the floor.
Mikhail sighed in relief when he caught me just in time. He helped steady me back on my feet.
Then “Let me,” he crouched and folded the ends of the pants so I wouldn’t constantly step on them.
“You ready to go to the mall?”
I nodded my head. “Yes, immediately please.”
The environment was dead silent as I parked my car outside the Andreev Tower, like the city was still asleep. I glanced at the clock on the dashboard- 7:21 a.m. early, just how my father liked it. That thought alone made me roll my eyes as I stepped out.The guards at the entrance stiffened at my presence. I gave them a single glace before walking past them. The elevator ride to the top was quiet except for the hum of the cables. I entered his office and found it empty. Of course it was.Dimitri is a man of ritual. If he says to be here at eight, he will walk through those doors exactly at eight. Everything about him was precision.I walked to the massive oak desk that ruled the room. The chair was turned towards the window, like an emperor’s throne facing his empire. I poured myself a glass of whiskey from his decanter on the side table and relaxed into his seat. The alcohol burned its way down and I sighed when I felt it hit home. I had thirty-five minutes to remember why I was here
Mikhail PovThe tires screeched on the pavement floor as I cut across the private drive through and stopped directly in front of the Andreev Tower. As I killed the engine, a uniformed security man stepped forward and tapped against my tinted glass with a knuckle.I slowly lowered the window and tugged the sunglasses from my face. Recognition flashed across his face instantly and he froze up. I took one glance at him, he wasn’t a familiar face but then again all staffs are required to memorize my face as long as they are employed here.He swallowed and stepped back without a word. I tossed the glasses unto the dashboard and shoved the door open. “Take care of her.” I tossed my keys to the nervous man which he barely caught without tripping over himself. The place hadn’t changed, even though I haven’t set foot here in years. The receptionist breath caught audibly when she saw me. I didn’t slow down, I knew the way. I’ve walked these halls for most of my life.I bypassed the elevator att
Alina PovI let my mother drag me back inside the house in total silence. When we re-entered the ballroom, we were greeted with music and chatter, and my mother went right back to her flawless expressions as if nothing happened. Every smile she gave to the party guests was delivered with the grace of a seasoned hostess. And she didn’t let go of me. Nah. She held unto my hand as if I’d run away if left unmonitored, but I didn’t fight against it. I’ve caused enough trouble for one day.My own mask didn’t feel secure. I kept thinking about what happened and what Mikhail is going to do. It all feels surreal, like did he really kiss me in my bedroom or did I black out for a few minutes and ended up dreaming? The party ended and the guests started to take their leave. Mother stationed herself at the grand doors as she bid the guests farewell. I couldn’t help but feel the sense of dread coming. I leaned against a long table set near the suitcase, and stared into the ground as I awaited the
Back in the present, the silence in the room was still present. Alina’s father clenched his jaw so hard that a vein pulsed at his temple, his eyes filled with rage was now covered in disbelief and fear?“You are lying. You must be.” He said with a low voice, as if it he raises it again, something bad might happen. I only stared into his eyes without a single emotion before straightening my back to glare at him from my height.“I assure you, I am not.” I replied. The weight of those words seemed to have slammed into the room. Mrs. Etienne gasped softly, her hand instinctively grabbing her chest before gently slapping her husband’s shoulder.“How… how could you not recognize the son of Dmitri Andreev?” she whispered in accusation. I glance at Alina which made my eyes soften a bit, she was just as frightened as her parents. She locked her eyes with mine and I could see the confusion and fear in her expression.Mr. Etienne’s nostrils flared as he looked to the guards. “Why are his hands f
Twenty Two Years Ago…I remember the sounds of laughter from my classmates in school. For a moment, I too was one of them, running around and chasing each other with a happy smile on my face. I forgot myself. That soon shattered when I saw my dad’s bodyguard in a distance, watching me with no emotion. He turned to leave and I took it as my sign to follow him. The other children didn’t even notice me walking away. They were too focused on playing and continued to do so as if I had never been there. Each step I took towards the parking lot felt heavier because I knew this would be reported back to my father. And then there he was, standing beside the car with the back seat door open, waiting for me. His eyes were cold as he watched me get into the car before entering himself.I sat quietly beside him. I didn’t need to say anything because he knows. He somehow always knew.“You are the successor to the Andreev Empire, and yet you waste your time running with children who will never matte
Mikhail PovHer breath came in ragged waves. I watched her chest rise and fall as if she had run for miles. She couldn’t keep her gaze on me and kept darting her eyes everywhere except for mine. I could feel the warmth of her body even through my suit as I hovered over her.I didn’t move, instead, I stayed close to her. Bracing myself on one arm beside her while my knee kept her pinned gently in place. My eyes trailed over her form, she trembled slightly but was not pushing me away. When I shifted she made a cute sound as my knee grazed her core.“You’re trembling,” I murmured lowly, with my lips curved slightly upwards. Her eyes locked unto my for a second, then she looked away and swallowed hard. “I… I’ve never-”“I know,” I said, the shrugged. “I can tell, and I would never take what you’re not ready to give.”Her eyes flicked back to meet mine, and the intensity there made my pulse quicken. I can still taste her when I run my tongue over my lips.I want more.God help me, I want t
