Chapter 3

Autor: Tomato Will
In the end, I still couldn't bring myself to be cruel. I wanted to tell Serena the truth. I wanted to know whether she would change her mind once she knew everything.

I pulled out my phone and called her.

When she saw my name on the screen, her brow furrowed, and without hesitation, she rejected the call.

Then she lowered her voice and comforted Michael. "It's okay. Just keep practicing."

I called again. This time, she turned off her phone.

Michael looked up, a hint of smugness flashing in his eyes. "Dr. Green, it might be urgent."

"No," Serena shook her head. "If it were someone important, I would've answered."

So I was no longer important to her.

I leaned against the wall, feeling as though the entire world were spinning.

Serena had not only abandoned her work principles but even me, all for Michael's sake.

Yet I was still foolishly holding on to hope. As I turned and walked away, Michael's grateful voice rang out behind me.

"You take such good care of me, Dr. Green."

"It's only right that I do," Serena replied affectionately.

I walked out of the hospital into the glaring sunlight. My phone buzzed with a message from Serena. "I was in a meeting just now, so my phone was on silent. Did you need something?"

After reading the flimsy lie she spun for me, I finally gave up for good.

Out of nowhere, Mom had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital where Serena worked.

I stormed into the emergency department like a madman. "Serena! Where's Serena?"

A nurse pointed toward the operating rooms. I staggered over and saw Serena washing and disinfecting her hands.

"Serena!" I grabbed her hand. "My mom needs surgery. You have to perform the surgery yourself. Please!"

She squeezed my hand, her expression more resolute than I'd ever seen it. "Will, don't worry. I'll take care of it."

For that moment, she was still the woman who would risk everything for me.

The surgery lasted two hours. I paced back and forth in the hallway, my palms drenched in sweat.

Suddenly, a panicked nurse came running out of another operating room.

"I need assistance! Michael, the surgical nurse, was injured by a surgical instrument because of a procedural error. He's bleeding heavily!"

My heart sank.

"The hospital's blood bank is running critically low. He's Rh-negative, and he urgently needs a transfusion!"

The nurse looked at me, her eyes pleading. "Mr. Langley! You're Rh-negative too. Could you…"

My entire body went cold.

Serena emerged from the operating room covered in blood. She looked at me, her gaze conflicted.

"Will…"

Michael was wheeled out, his face pale. He weakly tugged on Serena's coat. "Dr. Green, I'm so scared… Am I going to die?"

Serena immediately crouched beside him and gently took his hand. "No. I won't let anything happen to you."

The two of them clung to each other, completely ignoring me.

"Serena," I said slowly. "My mom is still in the operating room."

She closed her eyes, her voice hoarse and barely audible. "Will, I'm begging you. He saved my life. I can't just watch him die. Your mom isn't going to die anyway, and Mike is bleeding heavily right now. You can't be so heartless, Will!"

The surrounding medical staff eyed me with condemnation.

"Michael is always good to everyone, Mr. Langley. You can't just let him die when you know you can help him!"

"That's right. It's only a bit of blood. It's not like it'll kill you!"

"How can you be so cold-hearted? How can you stand by and let a young man die?"

Serena suddenly straightened up and shouted at me, "Are you going to save him or not? If he dies, I'll never forgive myself for the rest of my life! I've never asked you for anything, Will. Please, just save him. I'm begging you!"

The red light above the operating room was still on. My mom was in there, her life hanging by a thread.

And my wife was out here begging me to save another man.

I took in Serena's reddened eyes, Michael's pale face, and the reproachful looks directed at me.

So she was willing to sacrifice my mom's life for him, too.

"Fine. I'll give him my blood."

Relief immediately washed over Serena's face, and gratitude flashed in her eyes.

But I wasn't done talking yet.

"But once I've saved him, Serena, we're getting a divorce."

"Order!" The judge banged the gavel.Michael was still shouting, "He's just an old, washed-up man! Serena stopped loving him a long time ago! What right does he have to steal her money in the divorce and sue her?"I watched his performance with an icy expression. The judge announced a ten-minute recess.Serena took the opportunity to walk up to me, her voice choked with emotion. "Will, please. I know I made a huge mistake…"I looked at her swollen, red eyes, feeling nothing."Serena, some mistakes can never be undone. Your tears mean nothing to me."She dropped to her knees right there in the courtroom, in front of everyone. "Will, I'm begging you on my knees. Please forgive me just this once. Just once…"People began whispering among themselves.I bent down and looked at her. "Serena, you're kneeling before the wrong person. You should be kneeling before your conscience."The judge resumed the proceedings. Soon, the final verdict was announced. Serena lost the case and was or

"You saved her life, huh?" I remarked. "You can keep pretending to be her lifesaver, but I have the evidence to back me up.""William, don't even think about ruining my relationship with Dr. Green!""What relationship? One built on lies?"The call ended.Serena collapsed onto the couch, tears streaming uncontrollably down her face. The third file was a recording that was made on Valentine's Day. That day, I sat alone at home, looking at the photos on my computer before calling her. "Serena, when are you coming home? I got takeout from the restaurant, but it's gone cold now."Serena's impatient voice came from the other end. "I told you I'm busy with surgery. You can go ahead and eat first.""But it's Valentine's Day, and—""Yeah, yeah, I heard you. I'll be back once I'm done with work."The recording captured my helpless and forlorn sigh.Serena shot to her feet and started smacking her head against the wall until her forehead split open. Blood trickled down her face. But s

Serena suddenly looked up. "Will, you can't do this! We founded the company together!""We?" I sneered. "Have you forgotten? I'm the majority shareholder and the one with ultimate decision-making authority. You're nothing but a figurehead technical director."Michael sobbed hysterically on the floor. "Dr. Green, I really love you! I just wanted to be with you!""Love?" I looked at him. "Do you love her money or her position? If you really love her, why did you impersonate me? Why did you lie to her and tell her you saved her?"Michael cried even harder, but he could no longer come up with any excuses.Serena looked at Michael on the floor, then back at me, despair filling her eyes."Will, please forgive me. I know I messed up…"I picked up my briefcase and walked toward the door without looking back. "Serena, some mistakes, once made, can never be undone. I don't accept your apology."…Soon, I moved out of our home.On moving day, I took down the oil painting of sunflowers f

Michael, the man she kept calling her lifesaver, wasn't even in the photo from the article."No! That's not how it happened…" Michael finally shouted. "It was me… I was the one who told you how to perform first aid."I pointed at the first photo. "You were at least thirty feet away from the scene. You were too scared to even say anything. All you could do was stand there and watch."Michael completely broke down and collapsed onto a chair.Serena stared blankly at the photograph in her hands, then at the handkerchief."Therefore," I said, my voice frighteningly calm. "You betrayed the husband who actually saved your life for a man who falsely claimed to be your lifesaver. Tell me, Serena. How are we going to settle this score?""No, that's impossible…" Her voice trembled. "Mike said…""This is an edited photo! He forged it!" Michael's face turned deathly pale as he babbled, lunging forward to tear up the photograph.Snorting, I shoved him away and pulled out another piece of ev

"Michael's supposed research projects alone have accounted for more than two million dollars in expenses on the company's books," I declared. "You know exactly what you've done, Serena."Serena began cursing me, her voice shrill and grating. "William! How dare you investigate me? What's wrong with spending some money on the man who saved my life?"I scoffed. Did she seriously take me for a fool?"William, when did you become so unreasonable?" Serena's voice was cold, her eyes filled with derision.I looked at her. "What about you? When did you start lying to me because of another man?"She was rendered speechless, her face flushing red. But then, she roared with even greater fury, "You don't understand! Michael is different. He saved my life!""Is that so?" I sneered. "What did he use to save you?"Serena pulled a handkerchief carefully sealed in a plastic bag from her pocket and held it out to me with both hands. The reverence on her face made me sick."He used this, along wit

I pulled out the divorce agreement I had kept in my bag ever since I found out about Serena's relationship with Michael.Serena froze, staring at the few pages of paper for a long time before suddenly screaming, "William Langley! Are you threatening me? When did you prepare this? You planned this from the beginning!"Her eyes turned red. "When did you become so petty? You're divorcing me because I want a bit of your blood?"I simply looked at her without explaining any further. But Michael began to cry, his eyes slowly reddening. "Dr. Green, this is all my fault. I shouldn't have put you in this position."He clutched the hem of Serena's coat, his voice trembling. "Don't get divorced because of me. I'd rather die than see the two of you separate because of me."Serena's heart ached for him. She immediately crouched down to comfort him. "Mike, don't say that. This isn't your fault."She turned to look at me, her expression filled with determination. "Fine! I'll sign it, but you f
