In the other wing of the hospital, Vincenzo remained seated, his shoulder throbbing with a constant ache—an unrelenting reminder of the accident.

Even so, he barely registered his pain. His mind drifted elsewhere, locked onto the image of Vittoria being taken away for tests, out of his reach.

“Cazzo,” Vincenzo muttered, his jaw clenched tight, as if the memory of the terror in Vittoria’s eyes at the moment of the attack were still carved into his mind. “What the hell am I doing?” he went on, his voice restrained yet heavy with a guilt that gnawed at him from the inside.

Not even the understanding that entering the mafia had been the only way to keep Vittoria by his side was enough to calm him.

“It would’ve been easier to kidnap her,” he murmured harshly, the worry eating at him as he acknowledged how deeply his choice had left her exposed.

All her life—even growing up around that world—Vittoria had never truly been in danger. Yet it had taken only a few months at his side for her to f

Vittoria closed her eyes for a moment, allowing the weight of those words to settle in her chest. Her connection to Lily might not have been as long or as deep as Vincenzo's, but just looking at him was enough to feel the gravity of that pain as if it were her own.“She'll be fine,” Vittoria said, her voice choked with hope, clinging to it as the only possible truth, unable to accept any other outcome.Vincenzo took a deep breath against her neck, and the tightness around her waist revealed how much he was clinging to the hope conveyed by her words.“Shall we go?” Vincenzo asked, breaking contact, even though deep down he wanted to remain in the warmth of her arms.Vittoria nodded slowly, letting her eyes linger on his face for a moment, and there she saw the same sadness and vulnerability she had witnessed when they had lost their baby. This realization made even clearer what she had sensed from the first moment she saw Vincenzo with Lily: that child was much more than a patient; she

Bianca shook her head, incredulous at Vittoria's daring plans, not knowing whether to admire her courage or fear her obvious recklessness.“Vittoria—”“I know, it's crazy,” Vittoria admitted, letting out a long sigh that seemed to carry the weight of the world. “But I need to at least dream of a little normality.” She continued, her voice thick with fatigue. “These last few days have been so hard that I feel like every morning another burden falls on me.”Before Vittoria could continue or Bianca could ask any questions, the door suddenly opened, immediately catching both their eyes.Vincenzo flashed a restrained smile, a skillful disguise to hide all the worries weighing on him inside.“Good morning, Bianca,” Vincenzo greeted her with the usual politeness he reserved for people he wasn't so close to.“Good morning, Mr. Lucchese,” Bianca replied, maintaining a formality that created distance, even in the face of his politeness. He approached Vittoria and pressed his lips to her forehea

Vincenzo's heart raced wildly, as if it already sensed the gravity of what was to come.He opened his mouth to ask a question, but the sound refused to come out, stuck in his throat as if his body was preventing him from hearing the truth.“She's gotten worse,” Edward continued, his voice controlled. “It started with a fever and cough, which quickly developed into pneumonia. Her body did not respond to antibiotic treatment, and now her condition is considered critical.”Vincenzo closed his eyes, a sharp pain piercing his chest as the realization of the gravity of the situation hit him with the crushing weight of an unbearable reality.“Her body is in multiple organ failure,” Edward informed him, keeping his voice steady. “We are using all available resources to stabilize her, but at this stage it is a race against time.”“I'm on my way,” Vincenzo murmured, his voice low, as if that was all he could say.He ended the call and rested his hand on the table, seeking the balance that his b

Tommaso opened his lips in surprise, while Vincenzo stood up restlessly, his short steps tracing circles around the room. His breathing was irregular, as if the air refused to enter his lungs, and each movement revealed the panic spreading through his body.“Yesterday I was teaching Vittoria how to breathe,” Vincenzo murmured, his voice broken. “And now I'm the one who can't breathe!” He added, resting his hand on the table, his body bent as if carrying the weight of a ton. “Santo Dio, it seems like the whole world has decided to come crashing down on me at once!”Tommaso, still in shock, slowly got up and walked over to the drinks cabinet. He poured two generous glasses of whiskey, the amber liquid reflecting the soft light in the room.Turning around, Tommaso crossed the room with steady steps until he reached his restless cousin. He handed a glass to Vincenzo with a silent gesture while bringing the other to his lips.“Should I congratulate you or start preparing the funeral?” Tomm

An uncomfortable silence filled the line for a few seconds as Vincenzo clenched his teeth, his facial muscles tensed, and rage rose in his throat.“You must be joking,” Vincenzo declared, his voice thick with contempt, finally breaking the silence between them. “Now tell me what you found out, because my patience is running out.”“What do you think, Lucchese?” the woman asked, with evident disdain in every syllable. “That you can dictate the rules as if you owned everything? We have an agreement, and you insist on ignoring it. Give me what I asked for, and only then will you have the information you so desire.”“Do you really think you're being clever?” he retorted, standing up abruptly, irritation etched on every feature of his face. “The information you have isn't a whim to be negotiated as if it were a bargaining chip; it's what can allow me to understand the shit that surrounds this whole story. So, hand it over now, before I lose all interest in continuing this conversation.”“Pl

Instantly, everything narrowed: the furious roar of the engine invaded his ears, the sharp screech of tires tore up the asphalt, and the suffocating sensation confirmed that impact seemed inevitable. The driver reacted with quick reflexes, turning the steering wheel sharply, and the car obeyed with a jolt, the tires screeching against the asphalt as the bodywork vibrated, swaying violently to the side as if escaping disaster by a hair's breadth. The seatbelt held their bodies against the seats, and Vittoria let out a sob as she felt the air escape from her chest, panic returning even before her body had recovered from the previous shock. The intruding vehicle sped forward uncontrollably, climbed the curb, and crashed violently into a pole, the impact echoing in a metallic crash that reverberated throughout the street.“Are you okay?” Vincenzo asked, holding Vittoria's face in his hands as the car slowed to a complete stop.Vittoria just nodded, her chest rising and falling with heavy
