Chapter 2

Autor: Tcee Eke
Mara’s POV

That night, Soren called me from another number.

“Mara, I’ve already arranged your father’s transfer. It’s happening tomorrow. All you have to do is apologize to Celeste, and we can put this mess behind us.”

I clenched my fist.

“It’s too late.”

Then came his cold, humorless laugh.

“I’ve warned you before. Don’t use your father’s condition to force my hand.”

In the background, Celeste’s voice floated through the phone.

“Soren, come here. The lights are fading.”

His attention immediately shifted.

“An ambulance will be at the hospital tomorrow morning. Whether you use it is your choice.”

The call ended.

A moment later, Soren’s assistant sent me a message.

[Mrs. Calloway, Mr. Calloway has instructed that the Voss property be transferred to Ms. Arden. This is the condition for your father’s hospital transfer.]

A digital contract appeared beneath it.

I opened it.

The terms were simple.

I had to appear at a press conference and publicly admit that I had spent the past year stalking, harassing, and attacking Celeste.

Soren had already signed.

The next morning, I took a cab to the Calloway estate to retrieve my documents.

The keypad rejected my code.

I tried again.

Wrong.

After the third attempt, the front gate opened.

Two members of Soren’s security team approached with a property access log.

“Mrs. Calloway, Mr. Calloway gave strict instructions. You’re not permitted inside until you’ve signed the statement.”

I stared at them.

“This is my home.”

One of them lowered his eyes.

“I’m sorry. The deed now lists Mr. Calloway and Ms. Arden as the owners.”

My palms went cold.

My father had bought this house for me before I married Soren.

He had chosen every piece of furniture himself.

The safe in my study held the deed to the Voss property.

When Soren and I married, he’d insisted on keeping it in the Calloway vault for security.

I had trusted him.

Now I couldn’t even step inside my own house without begging for permission.

My phone lit up.

Soren.

[If you want access to the house, come to the press conference. Read the statement. Apologize publicly.]

I arrived ten minutes before the conference began.

Not to apologize.

I had come for what belonged to me.

The moment Soren saw me, he handed me a printed statement.

I skimmed the first paragraph.

It described me as an unstable woman who had spent months stalking Celeste, attacking her, and threatening her because of an imagined affair.

It also claimed that Soren had frozen my accounts to protect our marital assets.

I looked up.

“Take this part out.”

His eyes narrowed slightly.

“Which part?”

“The accounts.”

I tapped the page.

“You froze them. I didn’t. And because you froze them, I couldn’t pay my father’s hospital bill.”

Soren’s expression didn’t change.

“Read the statement, Mara. Afterward, I’ll have your father moved to the best facility available.”

I stared at him.

“You received the emergency notice last night.”

A flicker of impatience crossed his face.

“Enough.”

“If you’d bothered to call the hospital—”

“I said enough.” His voice dropped. “How long are you going to keep dragging this out?”

I looked at him.

If he’d simply made one phone call, he would have known I wasn’t lying.

But Soren had already decided what kind of woman I was.

Every warning was jealousy.

Every piece of evidence was manipulation.

Every accusation was another scene.

“When will the Calloway vault be opened?”

“After the apology.”

“And the Voss property?”

Soren glanced toward Celeste.

“She likes the place. Once the gallery is finished, there’s enough space upstairs for you to keep a room.”

I almost laughed. “My father’s house isn’t a gift for your mistress.”

His expression hardened. “I don’t have time for this.”

Celeste approached us before I could respond. She held out the statement with a sweet smile.

“Mara, just read it. Once you do, I’ll tell Soren to drop the complaint against you.”

She leaned closer.

Her voice fell to a whisper.

“Besides, it’s not the only thing I’m taking from your family.”

My head snapped toward her.

So she knew.

I took the statement from her hand.

Then I walked onto the stage.

The room was packed.

Reporters filled the front rows. Members of the Calloway organization stood along the walls. Cameras turned toward me the moment I appeared.

Soren stood below the stage, watching.

I unfolded the statement.

“My name is Mara Voss Calloway. Over the past year, I’ve damaged Soren Calloway’s cars, stormed into his clubs, and attacked Celeste Arden at the hospital.”

Soren’s expression eased.

He thought I’d finally surrendered.

I looked toward the cameras.

“Today, I want to apologize to everyone I’ve frightened.”

Celeste smiled.

I lowered the paper.

“Except her.”

Her smile disappeared.

I reached into my bag and pulled out the medical report I’d taped back together.

Then I held it up for every camera in the room.

“Because Celeste Arden was never pregnant.”

Mara’s POVA year later, the Voss property reopened.I kept the original wooden doors and gray brick walls. The ground floor became a free restoration classroom for young artists who couldn’t afford private training. The second floor remained untouched. My father’s books, photographs, clothes, and personal belongings stayed exactly where I’d left them. The broken wooden table still stood beside the window. The restorer had repaired it carefully, filling the deepest crack with gold.I hadn’t asked him to hide it. Something being repaired didn’t mean it had never been broken. On opening day, the old neighbors filled the courtyard with flowers.Alfred walked in carrying two cups of coffee.“There’s someone waiting at the gate.”I didn’t have to ask who.Soren stood at the mouth of the alley. He didn’t come inside.Over the past year, he’d sold the last of his remaining shares and used part of the money to compensate the artists whose work had been stolen through Calloway Arts & Holdings.

Mara’s POVThe day Celeste was brought back to the city, she accused Soren publicly at the airport.“He knew everything.”“He told me Mara would never actually leave him, no matter how much of a scene she made.”“She smashed his cars, stormed his clubs, and humiliated herself because she loved him.”“He said as long as she stayed obsessed with him, she’d never be able to move on.”The interview spread across the city within hours. Then Celeste released their private messages.Soren had written:[Once she finishes making a scene, she’ll come back on her own.][It’s only her account. She won’t starve.][Ignore her father’s condition. We need to break her temper first.]The last message had been sent on the night of my father’s surgery.9:43 P.M.At that exact moment, I had been on my knees in the hospital corridor, calling Soren for the nineteenth time.He never answered.By the next morning, Calloway Arts & Holdings had lost a huge portion of its value. The board called an emergency mee

Mara’s POVOn the day of the hearing, Celeste didn’t show up.Her lawyer claimed she was undergoing psychological treatment and wasn’t in a condition to face me.I almost laughed.Alfred submitted more than three hundred original emails to the court. The earliest was dated six years ago.Attached were my restoration plans, conservation logs, exhibition concepts, and artwork descriptions.Every one of them matched the work Celeste had later presented as her own.The judge looked toward the Calloway organization’s legal representative.“Why were these materials credited to Ms. Arden?”The lawyer hesitated. Before he could answer, Soren stood from the gallery.“I approved it.”Every camera turned toward him.He was wearing a dark gray suit.He looked even thinner than he had three months earlier. The judge studied him.“Why?”Soren’s jaw tightened.“Celeste had just returned to the city. She needed to establish herself in the art world.”He paused.“I believed Mara didn’t need the recogni

Mara’s POVThree months later, Soren Calloway actually came to Zurich.I was in the middle of restoring a nineteenth-century oil painting when my mentor knocked on the studio door.“Mara, someone’s here to see you.”I looked up.Soren stood at the far end of the corridor. He had lost a noticeable amount of weight. He was still dressed in the black coat I knew too well, but there was something different about him now. He looked tired. Almost worn down. Then I noticed what he was carrying. My father’s old cloth bag.I stepped out of the studio.“Why do you have that?”“You left something behind.” He held out the bag. “I wanted to bring it to you myself.”“You could have mailed it.”“I was afraid it might get lost.”I took the bag.I didn’t invite him inside.Soren’s eyes moved past me toward the restoration table.“You actually became a restorer.”“You knew I wanted to.”His expression stiffened.“I don’t remember you telling me.”“I did.”Three years ago, I’d placed my acceptance letter

Mara’s POVI was waiting at the airport when Soren called.“Where are you?”His voice sounded weak.“The airport.”“Mara, come back.”I looked through the glass at the planes waiting on the runway.“Did you sign the divorce papers?”“Can we not talk about that right now?”“No.”A sharp crash came through the phone as Soren’s breathing turned rough.“I’ve cut Celeste off.”I said nothing.“I shut down the gallery. Frozen her accounts. She’s no longer welcome at any Calloway property, and I’ve stripped her of every position she held within my organization.”My expression didn’t change.“I’ll also make a public statement.”He paused.“I’ll state clearly that Celeste was never pregnant.”“That’s what you should have done from the beginning. It’s not a condition for you to stay.”“No. It isn’t.”Soren went quiet. After a moment, he asked, “What about the Voss property?”“What about it?”“I’ve restored it.”I looked down at my boarding pass.“I had the broken table repaired.”My fingers tigh

Mara’s POVSoren was still standing outside the funeral hall.Celeste was gone.He held my father’s death certificate in one hand, the edges deeply creased from how tightly he was gripping it.“I had the hospital records investigated.”He stepped into my path.“The hospital didn’t stop life-saving treatment because of the unpaid bill. The imported surgical supplies were delivered forty-seven minutes late.”I looked at him.“Are you trying to tell me those forty-seven minutes weren’t necessarily fatal?”“No.”“Then what were you investigating?”Soren said nothing.I finished the thought for him.“You wanted proof.”His eyes shifted.“Proof that you weren’t the one who caused my father’s death.”“That isn’t what I was thinking.”“But everything you’ve done suggests otherwise.”I walked past him.Soren caught my sleeve. His grip was light this time.“The Calloway vault has been opened.”I stopped.“Your father’s belongings are all in the car.”He paused.“I’m also cancelling the transfer
