Chapter 4

Autor: Tcee Eke
Mara’s POV

The day Soren returned to the city, he called me seventeen times.

I was at the funeral home sorting through my father’s belongings.

I didn’t answer once.

That afternoon, his assistant found me.

“Mrs. Calloway, Mr. Calloway is waiting for you. Celeste’s gallery can’t open, and the investors are demanding compensation.”

I placed my father’s silver watch inside a wooden box.

“That has nothing to do with me.”

His expression tightened.

“Mr. Calloway said if you don’t get to the Voss property within the hour, he’ll file a claim against your father’s estate for breach of contract.”

My hand stopped.

When my father was alive, his greatest fear had been becoming a burden to Soren.

Now Soren was threatening his estate before his funeral was even over.

“Let’s go.”

By the time we reached the Voss property, Soren was already there. He stood beside the broken wooden table while Celeste held onto his arm.

The moment he saw me, he checked his watch.

“You’re forty-seven minutes late.”

I ignored him. On the day of my father’s surgery he was hours late.

He held out a document. “Withdraw the asset-preservation order.”

“Open the Calloway vault first.”

“Mara, know when to stop.”

Celeste’s face paled. “This gallery is everything I’ve worked for. You can’t destroy it just because you hate me.”

“Why should your dream be built on my father’s property?”

“Soren promised it to me.”

“Then tell him to give you one of his own properties.”

Soren suddenly grabbed my wrist. “Stop provoking her.”

I looked down at his hand.

He had done this countless times during our marriage.

Whenever I fought back, he called me irrational. Whenever I refused to give in, he called me difficult.

“Let go.”

“Sign the papers, and I will.”

I looked up. “And if I don’t?”

His voice turned cold.

“The Calloway organization is funding this entire project. We’ll also continue covering your father’s medical and security expenses.”

He paused.

“You can fight me over an empty property, or you can let us handle his care. Your choice.”

Even now, he was using my father against me.

“It’s already too late.”

Soren’s brows furrowed. “Don’t push your luck, Mara.”

I pulled the property deed from my bag.

“You said you’d return everything if my father came to collect it himself.”

His lips curled into a mocking smile. “What? You’re still using your father’s condition to manipulate me?”

I nodded. “That’s why they’re here.”

I pointed toward the entrance.

A convoy of Calloway security vehicles rolled into the street.

The men stepped out first then the rear vehicle opened.

Two funeral attendants carefully carried out a polished coffin bearing my father’s name.

Celeste’s smile disappeared.

Soren stared at it.

I looked directly at him.

“You wanted him to come collect his things.”

My voice was quiet.

“He came.”

One of the funeral attendants approached Soren with a folder.

“Mr. Soren Calloway?”

Soren didn’t answer immediately.

“You were listed as Mr. Gideon Voss’s emergency contact. The hospital requires your acknowledgement of the final records.”

He handed over the folder.

Soren opened it.

The death certificate was on top.

Beneath it were the resuscitation records, the overdue hospital payment notice, and the call log.

Twenty-seven missed calls.

All from the hospital.

Soren’s eyes stopped moving.

The time of death was printed clearly across the page.

Mara’s POVA year later, the Voss property reopened.I kept the original wooden doors and gray brick walls. The ground floor became a free restoration classroom for young artists who couldn’t afford private training. The second floor remained untouched. My father’s books, photographs, clothes, and personal belongings stayed exactly where I’d left them. The broken wooden table still stood beside the window. The restorer had repaired it carefully, filling the deepest crack with gold.I hadn’t asked him to hide it. Something being repaired didn’t mean it had never been broken. On opening day, the old neighbors filled the courtyard with flowers.Alfred walked in carrying two cups of coffee.“There’s someone waiting at the gate.”I didn’t have to ask who.Soren stood at the mouth of the alley. He didn’t come inside.Over the past year, he’d sold the last of his remaining shares and used part of the money to compensate the artists whose work had been stolen through Calloway Arts & Holdings.

Mara’s POVThe day Celeste was brought back to the city, she accused Soren publicly at the airport.“He knew everything.”“He told me Mara would never actually leave him, no matter how much of a scene she made.”“She smashed his cars, stormed his clubs, and humiliated herself because she loved him.”“He said as long as she stayed obsessed with him, she’d never be able to move on.”The interview spread across the city within hours. Then Celeste released their private messages.Soren had written:[Once she finishes making a scene, she’ll come back on her own.][It’s only her account. She won’t starve.][Ignore her father’s condition. We need to break her temper first.]The last message had been sent on the night of my father’s surgery.9:43 P.M.At that exact moment, I had been on my knees in the hospital corridor, calling Soren for the nineteenth time.He never answered.By the next morning, Calloway Arts & Holdings had lost a huge portion of its value. The board called an emergency mee

Mara’s POVOn the day of the hearing, Celeste didn’t show up.Her lawyer claimed she was undergoing psychological treatment and wasn’t in a condition to face me.I almost laughed.Alfred submitted more than three hundred original emails to the court. The earliest was dated six years ago.Attached were my restoration plans, conservation logs, exhibition concepts, and artwork descriptions.Every one of them matched the work Celeste had later presented as her own.The judge looked toward the Calloway organization’s legal representative.“Why were these materials credited to Ms. Arden?”The lawyer hesitated. Before he could answer, Soren stood from the gallery.“I approved it.”Every camera turned toward him.He was wearing a dark gray suit.He looked even thinner than he had three months earlier. The judge studied him.“Why?”Soren’s jaw tightened.“Celeste had just returned to the city. She needed to establish herself in the art world.”He paused.“I believed Mara didn’t need the recogni

Mara’s POVThree months later, Soren Calloway actually came to Zurich.I was in the middle of restoring a nineteenth-century oil painting when my mentor knocked on the studio door.“Mara, someone’s here to see you.”I looked up.Soren stood at the far end of the corridor. He had lost a noticeable amount of weight. He was still dressed in the black coat I knew too well, but there was something different about him now. He looked tired. Almost worn down. Then I noticed what he was carrying. My father’s old cloth bag.I stepped out of the studio.“Why do you have that?”“You left something behind.” He held out the bag. “I wanted to bring it to you myself.”“You could have mailed it.”“I was afraid it might get lost.”I took the bag.I didn’t invite him inside.Soren’s eyes moved past me toward the restoration table.“You actually became a restorer.”“You knew I wanted to.”His expression stiffened.“I don’t remember you telling me.”“I did.”Three years ago, I’d placed my acceptance letter

Mara’s POVI was waiting at the airport when Soren called.“Where are you?”His voice sounded weak.“The airport.”“Mara, come back.”I looked through the glass at the planes waiting on the runway.“Did you sign the divorce papers?”“Can we not talk about that right now?”“No.”A sharp crash came through the phone as Soren’s breathing turned rough.“I’ve cut Celeste off.”I said nothing.“I shut down the gallery. Frozen her accounts. She’s no longer welcome at any Calloway property, and I’ve stripped her of every position she held within my organization.”My expression didn’t change.“I’ll also make a public statement.”He paused.“I’ll state clearly that Celeste was never pregnant.”“That’s what you should have done from the beginning. It’s not a condition for you to stay.”“No. It isn’t.”Soren went quiet. After a moment, he asked, “What about the Voss property?”“What about it?”“I’ve restored it.”I looked down at my boarding pass.“I had the broken table repaired.”My fingers tigh

Mara’s POVSoren was still standing outside the funeral hall.Celeste was gone.He held my father’s death certificate in one hand, the edges deeply creased from how tightly he was gripping it.“I had the hospital records investigated.”He stepped into my path.“The hospital didn’t stop life-saving treatment because of the unpaid bill. The imported surgical supplies were delivered forty-seven minutes late.”I looked at him.“Are you trying to tell me those forty-seven minutes weren’t necessarily fatal?”“No.”“Then what were you investigating?”Soren said nothing.I finished the thought for him.“You wanted proof.”His eyes shifted.“Proof that you weren’t the one who caused my father’s death.”“That isn’t what I was thinking.”“But everything you’ve done suggests otherwise.”I walked past him.Soren caught my sleeve. His grip was light this time.“The Calloway vault has been opened.”I stopped.“Your father’s belongings are all in the car.”He paused.“I’m also cancelling the transfer
