Chapter 2

Author: Gaia Brown
I met Rocco at a Falcone-owned strip club.

That night, I stood backstage and suddenly realized I couldn't stand the thought of another greasy man putting his hands on me.

But the manager didn't see it that way. He raised his whip at me.

Rocco caught his wrist before it came down.

"Do you want to come with me?" he asked. "I can get you out of here."

Who turned down the Falcone heir? He had money, power, and a face that made women forget their own names.

He pulled me out of the life I had been drowning in and gave me a way to survive without selling my body.

He taught me to shoot, hired expert hackers to train me, and showed me how to negotiate with men who smiled while they planned to bury you.

He ignored where I came from and eventually made me the family’s godmother—the woman who managed its operations.

I gave him everything I had.

Chicago's underground knew my name because I earned it.

Ten years later, Rocco decided I was less useful than an MBA with a polished resume. He had used the filthiest trick possible to push me out of the family.

My chest tightened at the memory.

The next morning, I left the hospital early, before Rocco could send anyone to collect me. He had no idea I was gone.

He knew how much Claire meant to me. He thought threatening her would keep me obedient.

He had been so certain of my submission that he had not even posted a guard outside my hospital room.

I returned to the Falcone estate alone and headed for the office.

I needed to encrypt the family files on my computer and send them to Vincenzo.

As I passed the bedroom, the door stood partly open.

A man's rough breath came from inside. A woman moaned.

I stopped.

Claire lay naked across the bed that had been mine.

Rocco was over her, his hands gripping her hips while she called his name.

My stomach twisted.

When he pulled her closer, the charm necklace around her neck bounced against her chest.

That charm belonged to Rocco.

After one assassination attempt after another, I had gone to a temple in Nepal and crawled on my knees before its steps until blood covered my hands.

I had brought the charm home and placed it in his palm.

He had held my face and kissed me.

"I will never let you sacrifice yourself for me again," he had said.

Now Claire wore it while she slept with my husband.

I turned away, desperate to leave before either of them saw me.

My hip struck a vase in the hallway.

It crashed across the floor.

Rocco cursed and shoved the bedroom door open.

He saw me and came close enough to punch the wall beside my head.

"Fuck, Sofia. This isn't your home anymore. Tell me before you come back. Stop creeping around like a ghost."

I had lived here for ten years. I had chosen every piece of furniture in this house.

Now he expected permission before I walked through its halls.

He was scared I had seen Claire. He needed her close because he believed she could keep me under control.

My eyes burned. Pain rose with my anger, but I swallowed both.

Rocco watched my face. He expected tears. His shoulders eased.

"What did you see?"

"You found a new lover that quickly?"

I kept my voice light. Until the files reached Vincenzo, I needed them careless.

Rocco smiled, pleased with himself.

"Sofia, hand over the family business, and I’ll fly to Sicily for a few days every month to visit you."

He leaned toward me. Claire's perfume clung to his skin.

I pushed him away.

"You want every file related to the family business. Give me a room to handle it."

His smile disappeared.

"You know why I don't want you anymore?" he said. "You have no idea how to make a man happy."

He grabbed my arm and shoved me into a storage room.

Dust covered every shelf and box.

"You know I have a severe dust allergy," I said.

"Enough. It’s a little dust. You’re always exaggerating."

Rocco slammed the door.

The lock clicked from the outside.

"Finish the transfer," Rocco called through the door. "You stay there until it's done."

His footsteps faded.

Dust filled my nose. My throat began to swell.

There was no time to waste. I pulled out my laptop, encrypted the core files, and sent them to Vincenzo. We had less than a day to breach Rocco’s defenses and catch him off guard.

The transfer bar reached one hundred percent. The files were gone.

The message showed as delivered.

Vincenzo replied at once.

Do you need me to get you now?

I was so starved for air that I could barely keep hold of my phone.

My phone slipped from my hand.

It hit the floor beneath the crate.

I dropped beside it, coughing until my ribs hurt. Air scraped through my throat in thin bursts. My lungs felt full, heavy, useless.

"Help!" I hit the door with my palm. "Open the door!"

Nobody answered.

I clawed at the floor, forcing myself forward. My body wanted to curl up and quit. I reached again, my nails catching against the wood.

The phone lay inches away.

I pulled it closer and opened Vincenzo's message.

My thumb shook over the screen.

I typed one line.

I'm at the Falcone estate.

The message sent.

That night, after Rocco signed the mortgage contract, I had Vincenzo's men deliver a huge gift box to the Falcone estate. It stood in the center of the living room, nearly as tall as a man.Rocco sat near the bar with a bottle in his hand.Claire curled up on the sofa, one hand over her stomach as tears ran down her face. She kept looking at Rocco, waiting for him to soften."What is this?" Rocco asked, staring at the box.The guard gave him no answer. He pulled the ribbon loose. The box tipped over.A woman rolled out across the floor, tied up with rope and covered in bruises.Rocco's glass slipped from his hand and shattered."Lily?" His voice cracked. "You were paralyzed in a hospital."Claire sprang off the sofa. The color drained from her face. She rushed toward Lily, her hand raised."Shut up!" Claire screamed. "You worthless bitch, don't say a word!"Lily recoiled from her. Her face crumpled as she looked at Rocco."Boss Rocco, please!" she cried. "Spare me! Claire made me do it!

Vincenzo straightened and snapped his fingers."Her name is Lily. She’s a struggling actress. My people found her at an underground casino on the South Side. She’d been living under an assumed name and spending money traced to a Falcone account."An hour later, I stood in the basement of an abandoned warehouse.Lily sat tied to a chair. She had been cursing at the guards, yet her face drained of color when I walked in."Godmother Sofia... I don't know anything!"She fought against the ropes until the chair legs scraped the floor. "It was an accident. It really was an accident!"I walked toward her without answering. My hand slid into my boot and pulled out a military knife. I drove it into her thigh.Lily screamed.I pulled the blade free. Blood sprayed across my coat. She sobbed and bent over as far as the ropes allowed. I grabbed her jaw and forced her face up."How much did Claire pay you to push me down those stairs?""I don't know what you mean,"Lily gasped.I turned my wrist and p

"No! That isn't what happened! This is normal volatility from financial leverage!"Claire crumpled onto the floor, landing among the shattered glass.Dust covered her Chanel suit. Her polished executive act had vanished."Volatility, my ass."The Russian slammed his gun into her face.Blood poured from Claire's nose. She screamed and rolled across the floor, both hands over her face."Stop!"Rocco pulled his pistol and aimed it at the Russian. "You're on my property!""My property?" The Russian laughed.A dozen submachine guns rose around the room.Rocco stood frozen, his pistol still raised."Without Sofia holding your family together, what are the Falcones worth?"the Russian asked. "Three days. You bring me thirty million dollars, or you bring me your head."The buyers walked out, stepping over broken furniture and glass. On the projection, Rocco sank into his chair.Claire crawled to him, blood streaking down her mouth."Rocco, the system had an issue. My model is sound. You have to

I sat in Vincenzo's armored car and watched Chicago slide past the window.Only after we had left the Falcone estate behind did I remember basic manners."Thank you."Vincenzo kept his eyes on the road ahead. "In your mind, are we only partners?"I turned toward him."Those women weren't my mistresses," he said. "My enemies sent them to get close to me. They were assassins, not lovers.""You said you never explained yourself to anyone."My throat still burned from the dust. "Does the great Vincenzo Santoro need my sympathy now?""Sofia, I don't need your sympathy."His hand rested on the center console. He kept it there, far from me."Rocco trained you to be one of the sharpest operators in Chicago," he said. "Then he treated you like a disposable blade. You shouldn’t have to stand beside trash.""Vincenzo, we're partners."I leaned back and closed my eyes.He stayed quiet.Cigar smoke and leather filled the car.My chest tightened again. The itching in my throat spread lower, and exhau

It felt wrong coming from a man Chicago called a butcher."Sorry I was late,"he said.I looked into his eyes.Rocco had spent ten years treating me as if I belonged to him. Vincenzo looked at me as if I had a choice.Behind him, Rocco dragged himself out from the broken stone and raised his gun."The Santoro family storms into my territory with guns?"Rocco shouted. "You're declaring war!"Vincenzo stayed beside me. His hand remained under my elbow when my legs gave out.He snapped his fingers. The hall filled with the metallic clicks of rifles being readied."Rocco,"Vincenzo said, rising to his feet. "Look around."
