Chapter 1

Back at the estate, I packed a few of my things. I was staring at the prenatal record from three years ago when Dante came home.

"Angry?"

The impatience from the call was gone, and his tone was gentle.

"Ana, you know this. The Sarti family has plenty of influence too. If we want to keep growing, we need them.

"Besides, the mafia world is complicated and dangerous. You don't understand anything. Keeping you out of it is for your own protection.

"Vivi has been spoiled since she was a child. She isn't tough like you. You've been through far worse. Why pick a fight with her?"

Right. Vivienne is the pampered princess everyone has to indulge and give way to.

Me included.

My parents had abandoned me when I was young. I had endured more than my share of hardship to finish school and make it to the top.

I worked my way through school and earned a master's degree. With my expertise in finance, I solved countless problems for Dante's company.

That was how I caught his eye.

Everyone thought marrying Dante was the best thing that could ever have happened to me.

So apparently, I was supposed to accept every humiliation without complaint.

I nodded and forced the tears back before they could fall.

When I said nothing, Dante took an elegant gift box out of his bag.

"Vivi knows she upset you. She asked me to bring this back as an apology."

I took it and opened it carefully.

Inside was a blue diamond bracelet.

And all at once, I remembered a post Vivienne had made not long ago.

"A birthday present from him and I asked for a freebie too. What do you all think?"

The photo showed an extremely rare pigeon-blood ruby ring.

The blue diamond bracelet had been tossed carelessly to one side.

I smiled coldly. I put the bracelet back in the box and set it on the table.

"I don't need it."

Dante looked at me and sighed.

"You're my wife. Can't you be more generous?"

I took a breath, and a dull pain spread through my lower belly.

"I'm petty? We've been married for five years, and you've never once acknowledged me to anyone. Yet you and Vivienne go everywhere together like a couple.

"You said I couldn't get pregnant and that you urgently needed an heir. You said the Sarti family could help, so I turned a blind eye to you two sleeping behind my back. I never imagined this was how she'd help: by having your child herself.

"Have you forgotten how we lost our first child? Have you forgotten that gunfight three years ago? Have you forgotten—"

"That's enough. Stop."

Dante cut me off.

"What's past is past. Don't bring it up again."

My breath caught in my chest. My face turned red, but I couldn't get a single word out.

Three years ago, Dante got into a gun battle on the docks with his worst enemy over territory. I was taken hostage while protecting him and tortured for three days and three nights.

By the time his people got me out, blood had soaked through my clothes.

The baby was gone.

And my body was ruined for good.

Back then, Dante stayed at my bedside for two weeks.

He said he would love me forever and cherish me for the rest of his life.

He also said he wanted only me, that he was happy to spend his life with just the two of us, and that he didn't care about having a biological heir as long as he had me.

And in three years, he had forgotten every word of it.

"Ana, we should be looking forward to a better future, shouldn't we? Now we can have the best of both worlds, can't we?"

Dante's patience was running out.

I felt a chill running down my spine.

A stabbing pain ripped through my lower belly. I slowly sank into a crouch and squeezed my eyes shut against it.

Dante's phone rang.

"Vivi? What is it? Your stomach hurts again? Don't do anything. Wait for me to get there. Understand?"

Vivienne's sweet voice came through the line.

"But I know I upset Ana today. Maybe you shouldn't worry about me. You should stay with her."

"Nonsense!"

Dante was beside himself with panic.

"You're carrying an heir to the Greco family. You're the hope of this whole family! Right now, you're what matters most. As for Ana, I'll explain everything to her later. Wait for me. I'm coming now."

The words were barely out before he hurried toward the door.

I looked up, sweat beading at my temples.

"Dante!"

He turned back impatiently.

"What? Don't tell me you're still jealous. Ana, are you going to keep treating me like I'm some kind of criminal?"

I gritted my teeth, clutched my belly, and got to my feet, cold all the way through.

The words "I'm pregnant" reached my lips, but I never said them.

I said quietly, "Vivienne is allergic to antibiotics. Don't forget about this."

The front door slammed, and my heart sank with the sound.

I took an agreement out of the study and signed my name at the bottom right corner.

I didn't answer him.I heard from Nadia later that once Dante lost his position as heir, nobody paid him any attention at all.And because he knew too many of the family's secrets, the leadership had no choice but to put him under house arrest. They fed him well and saw to his every need, but he was never free again. The ordeal took a severe toll on Dante's mental health. Every day became a living hell.He once asked Nadia to pass on a message to me.He asked her to tell me that he no longer had a future and that he hoped I would become the person I'd always wanted to be.Nadia told him, "I won't be passing anything on for you. Ana said the two of you have nothing to do with each other. Besides, she's happy now. I won't let you disturb that."Only after I got engaged did she tell me everything. As for Vivienne, I heard she was caught in the conflict between the two families. A rival ran her car off the road, leaving her unable to walk. Both of them paid for what they did. When I finish

I didn't want to keep arguing with him, so I walked away.Dante snapped out of it and charged after me. Just as he was about to grab me, a black-clad figure stepped between us and sent him crashing to the ground with a punch.Dante had always been fit and had rarely lost a fight. The past few months of neglect must have taken a toll on him.He lay there in pain for a long while before slowly getting to his feet."Theo? What are you doing here?"I asked, startled."Ana, I've got you. Don't be afraid. I'll take care of this creep!"Theo started toward Dante again, ready to throw another punch, but I grabbed him."It's fine. Let's go. Leave him."Theo Parker was a junior in my program.I was new to the country and knew no one. Theo had helped me with everything.Theo walked me all the way to my building."Ana, I'll tell the professor you're taking tomorrow off. Stay home, okay? If that man can't find you, he might give up."I thought it over and decided he was right.Later, Dante did go t

Something seemed to brush lightly against my heart.I frowned."You have the wrong person, sir. I don't know you, and my name isn't Anna Reid."With that, I turned to leave. Then a hand clamped down on my wrist."Ana, stop hiding. Please. Do you have any idea how much I've missed you all this time?"Dante's voice was hoarse and trembling.I turned back and looked him over carefully.I hadn't seen him in over three months, and he really did seem different from before. He was so thin I could barely recognize him. His eyes were sunken, and he looked nothing like the confident mafia heir he used to be.He was no longer the man I'd loved. The thought left me with mixed feelings.Dante spoke softly. "It's all been a misunderstanding, Ana. I'm begging you to give me a few minutes. Let me explain."He kept hold of my wrist, his tone close to pleading.I gritted my teeth, and in the end, I nodded."The one who wanted you dead wasn't me. It was Vivienne. I only found out what she was really like

It had been a while since I'd left Los Angeles. Before I left, I had someone erase my old identity. Then I boarded a flight to Australia under a new name.Months earlier, I'd received an acceptance letter for an advanced program at an Australian university. When I applied, I never imagined I would get in.After submitting my application, I put the whole thing out of my mind. When the offer came, I was thrilled. After the excitement faded, uncertainty set in.I already had what I believed was a happy home. I loved my husband, and we were trying for a baby. How could I leave him and go abroad to study alone? After thinking it over, I decided not to go.It wasn't until recently, after everything my body and mind had endured, that I remembered the offer.I opened the email and replied without a moment's hesitation.I asked whether the university would let me enroll under my new legal identity.Everything went so smoothly that it felt like a dream.Later, when Dante sent his men to kill me,

Realizing she had said too much, Vivienne's eyes darted away, and she quickly turned to leave.Dante caught her wrist."They told me you ordered Ana's death, and I couldn't believe it. When I saw you just now, I kept wanting to ask you about it. But I was afraid of hurting you, so I held it in."He enunciated every word. "Vivienne, you've been after my family this whole time, haven't you? You wanted to kill Ana and take her place, didn't you?"Vivienne gave a cold laugh."You really are ridiculous, Dante. We've known each other for twenty years, and you still don't know me? I'm not some lovesick fool. I've always gotten what I wanted."She nodded."You're right. I want Anna dead, and I want everything you have. But you forced my hand! You knew perfectly well how much I've loved you all these years, but you never once acknowledged it. Then you went and married an outsider! When the two of you were all over each other in front of me, did either of you ever think about how I felt? What do

  • The Mafia Heir Begged After I Left   Chapter 5

The night Anna was shot and swept out to sea, Dante sent every man he had to search for her."You useless bastards! All you had to do was bring her to me. Why did you open fire? Are you all fucking idiots?!"Dante's eyes were bloodshot, his rage almost beyond control. The enforcers looked at each other. Then one of them spoke."Well, didn't Ms. Sarti tell us you wanted the finance director dead?"Dante froze. His blood had turned to ice.He swayed, his hands shaking violently."What did you say? V-Vivienne Sarti?"When they confirmed it, Dante lost control."How could she?"He whispered the question to himself."That's bullshit. There's no way she would do something like that!"Vivienne had grown up with him. All this time, she had seemed so respectful of Anna. How could Vivienne have been plotting against Anna behind his back?Dante couldn't believe it. He didn't want to believe it.He staggered out of the office. After a while, he turned slowly back."You will find Anna and bring her
