Chapter 3

Auteur: Sunnys
Dante's family company had extremely strict rules.

From the moment I walked in as finance director, it was settled that I would never walk out alive.

"Ana, don't do this just because you're angry with him. You two are husband and wife. If anyone should leave, it should be me."

Vivienne blinked and walked over to Dante with tears in her eyes.

"Honestly, Ana, you've misunderstood. I was careless and twisted my ankle, and I'm the one who called him to come and help me. If you're angry, be angry at me. Stop making things hard for him. He can't do without you."

Dante frowned and turned to Vivienne.

"Nonsense. You've done nothing wrong. Some people have important positions but none of the grace that should come with them. You're coming tonight. Don't make me say it twice."

My chest tightened so sharply that I could barely breathe.

That evening, the gala went ahead as planned.

When I got there, Dante was seated up front, holding Vivienne's hand as they whispered to each other, looking every bit like a couple.

"Next up is a Victorian tiara. Starting bid: five million dollars."

Dante, determined not to be outbid, jumped straight to twelve million dollars and won it.

The room erupted.

Dante stood.

"I'm giving this piece to the most important woman in my life."

I was sitting in a corner, and my heart felt like it had taken a blow.

Reporters started guessing who the most important woman was.

Dante wouldn't say.

When the bidding ended, soft violin music filled the room and the dancing began.

By the time Dante and Vivienne left the dance floor, it was already late at night.

Vivienne, wine glass in hand, stood beside Dante as he raised a toast to a business mogul. Just as she was about to drain her glass, Dante caught her wrist.

"Vivi, you're pregnant. You can't drink."

With everyone egging him on, he turned and looked at me.

"Anna, come here."

I froze. My legs felt like lead, and I couldn't make them move.

"You drink it for Vivi."

The room went quiet in an instant.

With every eye on me, I walked over to them and said, "I'm sorry. I can't drink. Mr. Greco, I'm allergic to alcohol."

Dante raised an eyebrow.

He leaned close to my ear and said quietly, "Since when do you lie in public? The doctor is right here. If you have an allergic reaction, he'll treat you immediately. This is important, and you're part of the family. Don't embarrass me in front of everyone."

My mind went back three years to a party where I had been forced to drink until I nearly suffocated.

Dante tore into several of his uncles and his younger brother like a madman.

Then he carried me to the hospital himself.

In that moment, I knew this man would protect me for the rest of my life.

Three years later, everything had changed.

Dante, who had once been willing to shield me with his life, forgot I was allergic to alcohol.

That man was gone for good.

My hand rested on my belly for a moment.

"But I'm pregnant too. I'm carrying your child."

Dante went still.

After a long, stunned silence, he laughed.

"You'd lie about being pregnant just to get out of drinking for Vivi? Anna, you've really outdone yourself."

As soon as he'd finished, Vivienne hurried to smooth things over.

"If Ana doesn't want to, don't force her. I can drink. She isn't from our world. She doesn't understand what this means."

Then she turned and looked at me.

There was a complicated look in Vivienne's eyes.

Challenge and contempt flashed through them at once.

At some point, her bodyguard had come to stand beside me.

Then I was shoved hard and fell to the floor.

I tried to get up despite the pain, but I had no strength.

Someone shouted nearby.

"Oh my God! There's blood!"

Amid the chaos, I heard Dante shout, "Protect Vivi!"

I didn't want to keep arguing with him, so I walked away.Dante snapped out of it and charged after me. Just as he was about to grab me, a black-clad figure stepped between us and sent him crashing to the ground with a punch.Dante had always been fit and had rarely lost a fight. The past few months of neglect must have taken a toll on him.He lay there in pain for a long while before slowly getting to his feet."Theo? What are you doing here?"I asked, startled."Ana, I've got you. Don't be afraid. I'll take care of this creep!"Theo started toward Dante again, ready to throw another punch, but I grabbed him."It's fine. Let's go. Leave him."Theo Parker was a junior in my program.I was new to the country and knew no one. Theo had helped me with everything.Theo walked me all the way to my building."Ana, I'll tell the professor you're taking tomorrow off. Stay home, okay? If that man can't find you, he might give up."I thought it over and decided he was right.Later, Dante did go t

Something seemed to brush lightly against my heart.I frowned."You have the wrong person, sir. I don't know you, and my name isn't Anna Reid."With that, I turned to leave. Then a hand clamped down on my wrist."Ana, stop hiding. Please. Do you have any idea how much I've missed you all this time?"Dante's voice was hoarse and trembling.I turned back and looked him over carefully.I hadn't seen him in over three months, and he really did seem different from before. He was so thin I could barely recognize him. His eyes were sunken, and he looked nothing like the confident mafia heir he used to be.He was no longer the man I'd loved. The thought left me with mixed feelings.Dante spoke softly. "It's all been a misunderstanding, Ana. I'm begging you to give me a few minutes. Let me explain."He kept hold of my wrist, his tone close to pleading.I gritted my teeth, and in the end, I nodded."The one who wanted you dead wasn't me. It was Vivienne. I only found out what she was really like

Realizing she had said too much, Vivienne's eyes darted away, and she quickly turned to leave.Dante caught her wrist."They told me you ordered Ana's death, and I couldn't believe it. When I saw you just now, I kept wanting to ask you about it. But I was afraid of hurting you, so I held it in."He enunciated every word. "Vivienne, you've been after my family this whole time, haven't you? You wanted to kill Ana and take her place, didn't you?"Vivienne gave a cold laugh."You really are ridiculous, Dante. We've known each other for twenty years, and you still don't know me? I'm not some lovesick fool. I've always gotten what I wanted."She nodded."You're right. I want Anna dead, and I want everything you have. But you forced my hand! You knew perfectly well how much I've loved you all these years, but you never once acknowledged it. Then you went and married an outsider! When the two of you were all over each other in front of me, did either of you ever think about how I felt? What do

The night Anna was shot and swept out to sea, Dante sent every man he had to search for her."You useless bastards! All you had to do was bring her to me. Why did you open fire? Are you all fucking idiots?!"Dante's eyes were bloodshot, his rage almost beyond control. The enforcers looked at each other. Then one of them spoke."Well, didn't Ms. Sarti tell us you wanted the finance director dead?"Dante froze. His blood had turned to ice.He swayed, his hands shaking violently."What did you say? V-Vivienne Sarti?"When they confirmed it, Dante lost control."How could she?"He whispered the question to himself."That's bullshit. There's no way she would do something like that!"Vivienne had grown up with him. All this time, she had seemed so respectful of Anna. How could Vivienne have been plotting against Anna behind his back?Dante couldn't believe it. He didn't want to believe it.He staggered out of the office. After a while, he turned slowly back."You will find Anna and bring her
