Chapter 3

작가: Adam
Costa Estate, 3:40 p.m.

I sat in the armchair at the far end of the living room, my back to the front door, facing the staircase. From this angle, I had a clear view of the entryway and the entire living room.

The rumble of an engine grew louder, and Pierre was the first one through the door.

His black shirt was unbuttoned to the third button, his hair looked as if he'd just rolled out of bed, and his sunglasses were pushed up on his head. His handsome face was set in a scowl that dared anyone to challenge him.

"Nick, get your ass out here!" He hadn't noticed me and shouted toward the second floor. "How dare you joke about Sis? Are you trying to get yourself killed?"

He was the most straightforward person in the family, which was probably why he had gone into acting.

Unfortunately, he also happened to have the worst temper of them all.

"Where's the contract?" His voice boomed through the entire building. "Stop screwing around. I've still got three hours of shooting left!"

Elizabeth followed close behind him, a folder tucked under her arm and a carefully calibrated gentle smile on her face.

But the instant she crossed the threshold and her eyes swept to me on the sofa, she froze as if she'd been electrocuted.

The folder slipped from her fingers. She scrambled to clutch it, her knuckles turning white.

Her expression flipped from composure to terror to forced calm in a single beat, as if the stage crew had missed its cue.

Pierre didn't notice her reaction. He strode to the coffee table and slapped his hand down on it. "The contract! Hand it over!"

"Pierre..." Her voice was barely above a whisper, with a tremor of panic so faint it was almost impossible to hear. "Maybe... maybe we should sign it another day?"

"Like hell." Pierre grabbed a pen and bit the cap between his teeth. "Didn't you say you handpicked this show for me?" he said, words muffled by the pen cap. "When have I ever backed down from something you asked me to do?"

He uncapped the pen, the tip hovering above the signature line.

With a sharp smack, I knocked the pen to the floor.

The next second, I grabbed a fistful of his carefully styled hair and forced him to look up at me.

In that instant, the arrogance on his face drained away as if doused with a bucket of ice water.

"S-Sis?" The disbelief in his eyes turned to shock in an instant, then was swallowed by a near-manic fury. "Who the hell—"

Before he could finish, I yanked hard. His whole body was forced to bend forward, scalp stinging from the pull.

"Pierre Costa, I see you still haven't cleaned up that filthy mouth. You're really asking for a beating." I leaned down to meet his eyes, and Pierre's pupils trembled violently.

His mouth hung open, and a broken gasp escaped his throat. "That grip... it's exactly the same. You... you're really my sister?"

Elizabeth stood by the coffee table, the folder in her hands crushed out of shape.

She stepped forward, her voice suddenly rising, laced with a deliberate, nearly shrill tremor. "Pierre, you're the easiest one to fool. How can you be sure this is Aria? You know how many people have tried to impersonate her!"

Pierre's body stiffened. He was clearly wavering. Just as he tried to lift his head, I slammed my palm on the coffee table. "Kneel!"

Pierre's knees buckled on pure reflex, and he dropped straight to the floor in front of me.

Growing up under my discipline, some habits had been ingrained so deeply they'd become instinct.

He looked up at me, tears streaming down his face, but his lips twisted into a smile so strained it was almost grotesque. It was the same placating grin he used to wear as a kid after he got caught doing something wrong.

"Sis..." His voice splintered. "You... you really fucking came back!"

He lunged forward, arms wrapping around my waist, shoulders heaving violently as a choked, guttural sob tore from deep within his chest.

Elizabeth's face went ashen. Every word came out barbed. "Pierre! Snap out of it! You watched your sister get buried with your own eyes. How could she come back from the dead? Don't let that face fool you!"

She turned to me, looking like she wanted to tear me apart alive. "You had surgery to look like Aria. What are you really after?!"

Six months later. Costa Estate. Christmas Eve.The fire blazed in the hearth, logs crackling and popping as amber light warmed the entire living room.Outside, heavy snow blanketed the hills. Every light in the estate was on, making it look like a lighthouse adrift in a sea of white.Pierre was curled up on his end of the sofa, a game controller balanced on his knees, muttering under his breath. "Left, go left! Nick, you useless bum, get in here and help me!""Shut up!" Nick sat cross-legged on the carpet, his laptop open on his lap and his fingers flying over the keyboard. "I'm calculating tariff quotas for the Eastern European shipping route. I don't have time for your video games!""You said you'd have it done last month and you're still not finished!" Pierre tossed the controller aside, bounced barefoot across the carpet, and hooked his arm around Nick's neck. "Sis! Nick's bullying me!"I sat in the middle of the sofa, a cup of hot cocoa in my hands, a half-finished book resting by

From laying the groundwork to launching an all-out attack on the Lockwoods, it took only two days.I sat in the study while my three brothers stood behind me, reporting progress from every front.I nodded with satisfaction. They had all grown up. Each of them could hold his own."Spring the trap," I said. When I walked into the basement, Elizabeth raised her head, her face eerily calm and vacant."Is it over?" she asked."It's over." I stood before her. "Damon Lockwood, your fiancé, broke two ribs during an emergency helicopter landing. His father, Vincent Lockwood, suffered a heart attack this morning and died on the way to the hospital.""Vincent orchestrated that car accident years ago and took my life." I gave a cold smile. "Now the debt has been repaid."Elizabeth's fingers went still."Don't pretend you didn't know." I continued. "Your ports, your casinos, your arms shipment routes. They all fly the Costa crest now. As for the Lockwood family members, hits have been ordered on ev

The living room was so quiet you could hear the last cinders settling in the fireplace.Seth stood rooted in place, motionless. But the cold, almost cruel suspicion in his eyes was melting bit by bit.His voice was raw, as if he were speaking through a mouthful of broken glass."By yourself, you went to the docks, the film set, Nick's office, the care facility." With each sentence, his voice dropped lower. "All alone, in seven days, you turned three years of Elizabeth's work inside out.""And we let her fool us for three full years!" He turned to Elizabeth and looked at her as if she were already dead."Elizabeth Lockwood." His voice was terrifyingly calm. "Do you have anything to say for yourself?"Elizabeth stood there, her lips quivering for a long time."You know you can't run!" Pierre rose to his feet. The pressure in the room became suffocating.Elizabeth suddenly burst into hysterical laughter. She raised her head and looked at me, venom brimming in her eyes."You think you've w

She stepped forward, her finger nearly jabbing me in the face. "Seth! Get a grip! Every word out of her mouth is a lie!""If she's really Aria, then where has she been all these years?""If some miracle really brought her back to life, how does she know all of this?""She's obviously a plant from the Reese family, here to divide us! She wants to discredit me and drive me away from you!""That way, she can control everything about you and tear the Costa Family apart!"Seth's expression was unreadable. Pierre's fists clenched tight. Nick stepped half a pace forward to speak, but I raised my hand to stop him.I watched Elizabeth. I watched the fine beads of sweat on her upper lip, the white knuckles of her clenched fingers."Seven days," I said softly."What?" Elizabeth froze."Seven days ago." I held her gaze. "When I woke up, I was in Room 207 of a cheap motel on the east side of town.""I had woken too suddenly and was very weak, so I stayed there for two days."Seth's pupils contracte

"According to you, DNA can be faked and memories can be stolen. So tell me, what would it take to prove who I am?"I tapped the table. Seth looked back at me, his composure bordering on cruel."When I was eighteen, I went on my first mission and killed someone. I didn't speak for three days afterward. How did you get me to talk?"Pierre and Nick exchanged glances. They didn't know the details of this either."The night you came home, you sat on the bathroom floor taking your gun apart and putting it back together over and over." I looked at Seth, my expression softening. "I asked how many you'd killed. You said one. I asked how it felt. You said you didn't feel anything. Then you held your hands under the faucet and scrubbed for forty minutes until the skin was raw."I stood and walked over to him, looking up at my brother, who was several inches taller than I was. "I said, Seth Costa, you can't wash it off. The blood isn't on your hands. It's on your conscience.""You asked me what to

Those gray-blue eyes of his swept over me like twin scanners, sliding from my face to my hands to my feet.He inspected me inch by inch without a trace of warmth."You've got some nerve. Duping Nick and Pierre was one thing, but slapping the Don of the Costa Family?" Elizabeth pointed at me and raised her voice. "See, Seth? I wasn't wrong. Those two have lost their minds!""Pierre." Seth deliberately avoided my gaze. His voice scraped like gravel on concrete. "You're sure?"Pierre rose from the sofa, his back perfectly straight. "I'm sure. She knows about the scar on my thigh. Nobody but Sis has ever known about it!""Including the doctor who examined you?" Seth sneered.Pierre went still."Nick, what about you?" Seth turned back and fixed Nick with a cold stare."I'm sure too!" Nick nodded. "She knows every detail from our childhood.""The household staff could know details from your childhood," Elizabeth cut in."She even knows my passwords! Nobody but Sis could possibly know them!"
