Chapter 4

作者: Perfect Timing
Joseph did not come home all night.

He stayed at the hospital to keep Monica company.

Early the next morning, I received a call from Marcy.

She cried miserably over the phone.

“You have to save me, Natalie!

“That wretched girl actually sued me! And it was the Adams Inc. legal department that told me. They said they’re sending me to prison!

“But they also said that if I confessed who was behind it, they wouldn’t press charges!

“I didn’t say a single word about you. Please, you have to save me!

“And the compensation for my son’s wedding? Could you raise it a bit more?”

I assured her that nothing would happen to her.

Joseph’s real target had never been her.

Sure enough, just as I hung up, Joseph called.

“Come to the hospital and apologize to Monica. I’ve already contacted the reporters.

“If you put on the right show, everything can still be negotiated.”

“And if I don’t go?” I asked calmly.

There was a brief silence on the line.

“Paying someone to incite serious bodily harm…You know what the company’s legal department is capable of.

“A few years in prison wouldn’t be a problem.”

I agreed to go to the hospital.

On the way there, articles were already being pushed to my phone.

I looked away.

More than a dozen media outlets were squatting outside Monica’s hospital room.

The moment I appeared, camera flashes nearly blinded me.

“Mrs. Adams, we heard you’re here to apologize to Mr. Adams’s secretary?”

“Don’t you feel this is beneath you, acting as the wife?”

“Are you putting up with Mr. Adams’s infidelity just for the money?”

I smiled calmly. “Apologize? Then make sure you get a good shot. I move fast—if the photos come out blurry, I won’t make tomorrow’s front page.”

The reporters were held back by bodyguards on both sides as I walked into the hospital room.

Joseph was peeling an apple for Monica.

Monica smiled sweetly.

“I just don’t have much of an appetite, Natalie. Joseph is only peeling an apple for me—don’t misunderstand.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“You’ve already slept with him and addressed him by his name, yet you’re still pretending to be innocent?

I suppose the pig manure back in your village was good—it really helped you grow into something that knows how to act.”

“Joseph and I are completely innocent. How can you say such things about me?” Monica clenched her teeth, her cheeks flushed.

Joseph impatiently tossed the fruit knife aside.

“Don’t forget why you’re here, Natalie,” he threatened.

At his signal, Harry handed me a cup of tea.

Steam still rose from the surface.

This kind of cup would scald your hand just holding it.

“As long as you apologize, I guarantee Monica won’t pursue the matter of you inciting violence.”

I clicked my tongue.

“But I didn’t just incite violence,” I said lightly.

“I also spread the news that she climbed into your bed and became your mistress. You’ve already paid for so many front-page headlines, so why not have them polish Monica’s image a little?

After all, doesn’t she insist she’s not a mistress?”

Monica’s eyes reddened, her expression stubborn.

“I remember the kindness you showed when you sponsored my education; that’s why you’re like an older sister to me. But you can’t insult my dignity like this.

“If it weren’t for Joseph speaking up for you, I wouldn’t forgive you, no matter what!”

The scalding tea and a slap landed on Monica’s face at the same time, leaving nothing but humiliation on the carefully crafted mask of innocence.

Joseph and I signed the divorce papers without incident.Over the next thirty days, the news of Joseph and Monica’s wedding spread through the entire city. One hour before the ceremony, I called Frank.“Don’t worry,” he said. “As long as I’m here, your wedding gift will definitely reach his hands.”The media called it the “wedding of the century,” so I attended in full formal dress.Behind me, I brought along Monica’s old acquaintances. Her parents, her relatives, everyone she had known since childhood. They all wore outfits custom-made exclusively for Monica.Printed on them were intimate photos of Monica with her various boyfriends, as well as every mistake she had made from childhood to adulthood. They displayed Monica’s past in its entirety. They also reminded Joseph that the pure, innocent girl he adored was nothing like the girl he imagined.“You did this on purpose!” Monica screamed. “You did this on purpose! This is slander!”She clutched Joseph’s arm, crying hy

I should have been desensitized by now. After all, so much time had passed, and I thought I had fully processed Joseph and Monica’s affair. But I hadn’t.I gripped my hands tightly, trembling with anger.Hearing him say “divorce” made my head ache.I bit down hard on my lip; the metallic taste of blood spread across my mouth. It took me a long moment before I found my voice.“Joseph… I will not divorce you.“If she’s going to be a mistress, she’ll always be a mistress. Her son will only ever be an illegitimate child, hidden from the world!”Then I smashed everything within reach.Tore apart every document on his desk.I unleashed all my fury in front of him.Through Joseph’s dark eyes, I saw myself as a demon clawing its way out of hell.“I’m telling you, this isn’t over!“Wherever she gives birth, I’ll make the whole hospital know she’s a mistress. “Wherever her child goes to school, I’ll make sure he’s called a bastard from the very first day!“I don’t care if you di

That night, Joseph brought Monica home.“Monica will be staying here for a few days.“She’s just recovered from a serious illness and needs peace and quiet. Your room has the best soundproofing. “It’s perfect for her.”I casually grabbed the vase beside me and hurled it straight at him.Shards exploded everywhere. A fragment sliced across his face, leaving a thin line of blood.Amid Monica’s scream, I walked slowly toward Joseph.“What do you take me for?”“This is my home. I am your wife. Do I need to make room for a mistress?”Monica clutched Joseph’s wound, her voice full of concern.“It’s just a room, Natalie. Is this really necessary?” she asked angrily.“I’ve already said it, nothing is going on between us. “I don’t want to be here if it means the two of you are going to get divorced.“If you hadn’t sent my mother after me, causing her to make a scene at my place every day, Joseph wouldn’t have felt sorry that I couldn’t rest properly and brought me here.”It was

I marveled at the speed I had trained into my hands.I rubbed my slightly reddened palms. The sting from the hot tea, the force of hitting her until numb, it all lingered.“How dare you talk to me about forgiveness!”The reporters’ flashes continued to blaze.I sneered coldly. “I sponsored you. I recommended you for a job. And that’s how you repay me? By sliding into my husband’s bed?“I seem to recall that Computer Science at Havana University doesn’t teach these skills.“So, self-taught mistress, maybe you should open a class and teach others?”Monica covered her face and sobbed quietly.Joseph tried to comfort her while also venting some of his anger at me—a task that stretched him too thin.“How dare you!” Joseph said as he held Monica close.Realizing I was about to get dragged into a dull argument with him, I spun around and left.Passing the reporters, I called over my shoulder, “Did you get a clear shot of all that?”The reporters nodded in stunned acknowledgment.

“Say something, Natalie.”Joseph suppressed his anger. It was ridiculous.I was the one who should have been furious.Just like the day I exposed his affair with Monica, after a brief moment of shock, anger had replaced his guilt. He flew into a rage, accused me of betraying his trust, and of invading his privacy. It was as if he were the one who had been cheated on, and I had become the woman who stayed out all night, who crawled into bed with younger men.“What do you want me to say?” I asked as I looked up at him.“Should I grow numb, hand you a divorce agreement, take nothing, and wait for the day you realize Monica is nothing special, then remember me during some night when you’re drunk, clutching your stomach in pain, thinking about the hangover brew I used to make for you?”“I don’t drink,” he said calmly.“Of course you don’t drink,” I replied. “And I never got up in the middle of the night to make you a hangover drink.”I forced a smile, one so strained that tears
