Chapter 3

Author: Ethereal
Twenty-four hours passed after the documents were delivered.

Dante's assistant signed for mine. A desk officer accepted Luca's at Major Crimes. Neither man responded.

That night, Valentina posted from her townhouse.

In the photo, Luca knelt beside a newly installed brass security panel while Dante sat on the sofa holding a portable heart monitor. Valentina wore an oversized cashmere sweater and the red silk bracelet Mrs. Moretti had once given her for protection.

Her caption read:

[Real family always comes when the alarm goes off.]

Moretti cousins and family associates flooded the comments with praise. Someone asked what it felt like to have both brothers taking care of her.

Valentina replied with a white heart.

Sofia stared at the screen until her eyes went red. "Do they think it only counts as crossing a line if somebody's tongue is involved?"

"They're not our problem anymore." I locked my phone.

I still answered when Dante called that evening.

He sounded exhausted, probably fresh from surgery. "Did you send divorce papers to my hospital because you wanted the entire staff to know we're fighting over Valentina?"

"We aren't fighting. I'm ending the marriage."

"Her alarm was compromised, Elena. Her arrhythmia was real. I didn't abandon my job to keep her company."

"I never accused you of treating her."

"Then why did you and Sofia file at the same time, with almost identical language? What am I supposed to call that except coordinated pressure?"

My daughter's death certificate lay on the bedside table.

There was no explanation he couldn't reshape. If I said the baby was dead, I was threatening him. If I said I wanted a divorce, I was fighting for attention. If I stayed silent, he would call it an admission.

A glass touched wood on his end of the line. Then Valentina spoke, soft and selfless.

"Dante, don't argue with Elena because of me. She's pregnant, and hormones can make everything feel bigger. I can stay at a hotel."

He turned away from the phone to reassure her. "No. Somebody breached your security. You're not staying alone until we know who did it."

Then he came back to me. "You heard her. She's willing to leave her own home to keep the peace. You and Sofia can't keep translating every situation into an attack."

My fingers tightened around the phone. "Are you staying there?"

"Luca and I both are. For tonight."

"Fine. The agreement gives me the East Sixty-Seventh Street apartment. I'm walking away from the Long Island property and the family trust. There is nothing for you to contest."

"I'm not signing."

"Then I'll file in court."

A long silence passed. "You're really taking it this far?"

"Yes."

"Over a few missed calls?"

"No. Because I finally understand that, in your mind, I will always come second to whatever story Valentina tells first."

I hung up.

Luca tried a different approach with Sofia. He laid out his reasoning like a case: two sisters, two nearly identical emergencies, both occurring while Valentina's alarm was active. Statistically, he said, it looked staged.

"Did you verify anything?" Sofia asked.

He had no answer.

He hadn't contacted the maternity clinic, pulled emergency dispatch logs, or asked a colleague to check the intersection. He had convicted his own wife on the strength of a screenshot with no verified source.

"You didn't distrust me because of evidence," she told him. "You decided from the beginning that Valentina wouldn't lie and I would."

Two days later, we transferred to a private recovery center no one in the Moretti family knew about. We registered under Rossi, restricted our medical files, and refused all family inquiries.

For two weeks, Dante and Luca didn't find us.

The truth was, they didn't seriously look.

To them, disappearing, turning off our phones, and filing for divorce were only the next stage of a tantrum they expected us to end.

The case lasted eight months.Valentina eventually accepted a plea agreement and received a lengthy prison sentence without the possibility of parole. The Morettis severed every business connection with the Bellini family, and the accounts used in the plot were frozen.Vittorio transferred part of the recovered legal assets into two maternal emergency funds. They were named for Lucia and Nicholas, the daughter and son Sofia and I never brought home.We didn't attend the dedication. Our grief didn't need an audience, and the Moretti family didn't get to tell our children's story for us.Dante survived the ethics investigation with his medical license intact, but he lost his position as director of trauma surgery. He moved to a veterans' hospital as a general surgeon and began weekly therapy.Luca left Major Crimes and transferred to the police academy, where he trained recruits in crisis response. He turned our phone calls into an anonymous case study and made every class repeat the sam

Vittorio Moretti came to the precinct the night Valentina was arrested. He brought no guards. Only his ebony cane. The man who could silence an entire dock with one look lowered his head when he saw Sofia and me."The Moretti family failed to protect you."Sofia's face remained blank. "We weren't attacked by a rival family."Vittorio's grip tightened around the cane. "I know."Valentina's malice had started the plot, but fourteen years of family indulgence had made it possible. The Morettis gave her access to private offices, security systems, foundation accounts, and medical information. In every conflict, they assumed she was the frightened one and someone else had caused the harm.Dante and Luca had simply enforced that bias when it mattered most. After questioning, prosecutors charged Valentina with two counts of attempted murder in the first degree, conspiracy, unlawful surveillance, and financial crimes. As officers led her from the interrogation room, she saw us and fought again

Police caught the Cadillac driver at the Port of New Jersey as he prepared to board a cargo ship bound for the Bahamas. His passport was issued under a false name. His suitcase held one hundred and twenty thousand dollars in cash and a brand-new Patek Philippe.Faced with attempted murder, leaving the scene, and identity fraud, he lasted two hours in interrogation."A woman hired me," he said, crushing a paper cup between his hands. "She told me to reach the maternity clinic at 10:40 and pick up two pregnant women. An armored truck would be coming through the intersection. When the light turned yellow, I was supposed to jerk the wheel into its lane and get out before the cops arrived. The rest of my money would be waiting."Marcus leaned forward. "Two women?""Yeah. The names were Elena and Sofia."Behind the one-way glass, cold spread from my fingertips to my chest. If Sofia hadn't stepped out for that apple tart, she would have been sitting beside me.Valentina hadn't arranged a scar

The armored truck belonged to a private cash-transport company. Its driver, Eric Nolan, resigned three days after the crash and left New York.Police found him in a Pennsylvania motel. He hadn't slept properly in a week.Someone had contacted him through an encrypted app and paid him fifty thousand dollars. The instructions were simple: follow his assigned route past the maternity clinic and, no matter what happened at the intersection, do not slow down early."I thought it was insurance fraud," Eric said, both hands locked behind his head. "The Cadillac swerved in front of me. I hit the brakes, but there was no room. I saw somebody in the back seat, and then... it was too late."The money hadn't arrived through a normal transfer. The buyer purchased casino chips, moved them through three shell companies, then converted them into a cashier's check. The Morettis knew that laundering method well. One look at the structure told Luca the person behind it had access to private-club settleme

Mediation was suspended.Luca notified Major Crimes that the collision might be an intentional attack and requested preservation orders for every relevant record. He didn't take the case himself. Because the victims were his wife and sister-in-law, he formally recused himself and handed everything to Detective Marcus Hale.It was the first professionally correct choice Luca had made since Sofia's call.It was also far too late to save anyone.Marcus began with a basic question: why had I been inside that Cadillac?"Valentina arranged it," I said. She had met us outside the maternity clinic and claimed a Moretti Foundation car was available. The vehicle carried a temporary foundation placard, and the driver wore the uniform of the family's security company. Before getting in, Sofia smelled apple pastry from the bakery across the street and insisted on buying a box. Valentina urged me to go ahead, promising the driver would loop back for her.The crash happened less than five minutes lat

Before I could answer, Luca's work phone rang. The officer on the line spoke so quickly that every word carried across the sudden silence."Detective Moretti, we have a development in the suspected vehicular attack outside St. Vincent's maternity clinic two weeks ago. The reporting party just submitted the medical records. The victims were Elena Moretti and Sofia Moretti. Neither baby survived."Luca stood there gripping the phone as though someone had fired a round straight through his chest. The courthouse noise seemed to vanish.Dante still had one hand beneath Valentina's elbow, but his fingers went slack. She whispered his name. He didn't hear her.His eyes stayed fixed on my abdomen, shifting from disbelief to clinical assessment. He saw the pallor beneath my makeup, the fading IV bruises on my wrist, the stiffness in my walk, and the edge of the surgical support band beneath my coat."Placental abruption?" he asked.I said nothing."Uterine rupture?" He moved toward me, then sto
