Chapter 4

Autor: Bowl of Rice
I watched Hugh and Zoey walk away, then slowly loosened my grip on the ticket. My fingers had gone numb from how tightly I'd been holding it.

I sat alone at city hall and waited.

When there were five couples ahead of us, I texted Hugh. "Five couples ahead of us. You can come back now."

His reply came almost immediately. "Zoey and I are still waiting in line. We haven't even gotten our food yet. Five couples is plenty of time. Stop rushing me."

I turned off the screen, feeling my heart sink a little more.

I watched as two more numbers came up on the display board.

I texted him again. "Only three couples left. If you don't come back now, you won't make it in time."

This time, Hugh took much longer to reply. Another number was called before his message finally came through.

"What's the rush? We just started eating. Wait a little longer!"

By the time there was only one couple ahead of me, I heard hurried footsteps behind me. My heart jumped, and I quickly got to my feet and turned around.

It was Devon Hyde.

Our eyes met, and he smiled at me, still catching his breath. "Lynette, I finally made it this time!"

Just then, the automated announcement came over the speakers.

"Number 21, please proceed to the counter."

I smiled too. I slipped my arm through Devon's, and we walked over to the counter and sat down.

The staff member handed us each a pen and a marriage application form. As we started filling them out, I glanced over at Devon. His hand was trembling slightly with excitement.

Once we finished filling out the forms, the staff member asked us one last time, "Are you both sure? If so, I'll go ahead and put the official seal on your marriage certificate."

I nodded.

Beside me, Devon suddenly blurted out, "Wait."

He turned to me. "Lynette, are you really sure about this? If you marry me, I'm never letting you go. Not for the rest of my life. Even if Hugh..."

Before he could finish, my phone rang.

It was Hugh.

I answered, and his voice came through over a jumble of background noise.

"Lynette, let's just do this another day. It's almost 11:30 am, and Zoey and I just left the pizzeria. There's no way we'll make it back in time.

"She thought she was drinking something nonalcoholic, but it had alcohol in it, and now she's really drunk. I need to take her home first. You can head back on your own."

I let out a quiet laugh. That was the moment I finally gave up on him.

"Don't bother. I already got married this morning."

"What are you talking about? How could you get married without me there? I really do have a situation here. Zoey—"

I didn't want to hear another excuse, so I cut him off. "Hugh, we're done."

I hung up and looked back at the staff member. "I'm sure. Please go ahead."

Devon didn't say anything. He just took my hand and held it tightly.

There was a sharp click as the staff member embossed the official seal into our marriage certificate.

I took the certificate, snapped a photo, and posted it on social media.

The caption read, "Here's to forever with you."

I turned to Devon with a smile. "Come on. My mom's waiting for us at home for lunch."

Meanwhile, Hugh had just gotten Zoey into the passenger seat after she passed out drunk when his phone rang.

It was one of his friends.

The second he answered, his friend sounded thrilled.

"Hugh, congratulations! I just saw the marriage certificate Lynette posted. You two finally made it official. You can count on a big wedding gift from me when the big day comes!"

Hugh froze. "What? I'm not even at city hall. How could Lynette get married without me?"

The laughter on the other end stopped cold. A few seconds passed, as if his friend were checking the photo again.

Then he swore. "Holy shit! Hugh, this is bad. The other name on Lynette's marriage certificate isn't yours. I think she married someone else!"

When I didn't respond, Zoey seemed to take my silence as a good sign. She fidgeted with her hands and glanced around before finally getting to the real reason she'd approached me."Lynette, you and Mr. Hyde have plenty of connections. Isn't there some cushy job you could get me here at the hotel? Or maybe something at Mr. Hyde's company? I'll take anything. I just can't keep waiting on people like this."She looked up at me with an eager, pleading smile. It was as if everything that had happened between us had been forgotten. She still thought she could come to me whenever she needed something, just like she always had.I didn't bother answering her.Instead, I turned to the hotel manager, who was still furious with her. "Fire her and make sure she never works here again."I didn't spare another glance at the fear in Zoey's eyes. I tightened my hold on Devon's arm and walked straight past her toward the exit.Zoey froze for a second before panic set in. Then she came tearing aft

Devon said coldly, "I have no respect for you, Hugh. You were born into money, but you've got big ambitions and nothing to back them up. And when it came to being a decent husband, you couldn't even stay faithful."The only thing you've ever had worth bragging about is that someone as incredible as Lynette once agreed to marry you. But you were too damn stupid to know how good you had it, and you threw it all away."He stared down at Hugh. "Now get lost. Don't make me pay your parents a visit over this. If this gets ugly, I won't be the one embarrassed."Hugh clenched his jaw and watched as our car pulled away, kicking up dust behind us. In the end, he didn't dare follow.Devon drove with one hand on the wheel. When we stopped at a red light, he reached over with his free hand, covered mine with his, and gave it a gentle squeeze."Do you want me to have security keep him away from you? I'll call the Jamesons again tonight and make it clear that he's to leave you alone."I shook m

The hatred in Hugh's eyes made Zoey shrink back, but she wasn't ready to give up. She forced herself to keep going and reached for his hand again, sounding close to tears."Hugh, don't say that. You've treated me so well lately. I know how you feel about me. You're just hurting right now because you still can't let Lynette go."But if you give me a chance, I'll love you and treat you right. We can be happy together. Wouldn't that be better?"Hugh shook her off again. "Get the hell away from me! Who said I wanted to be with you? If it weren't for Lynette, I wouldn't even know who the hell you are."Zoey stared at him, stunned. Then she saw the disgust on his face, and it finally sank in.Hugh had turned on her. He was going to cut her off and dump all the blame on her as if none of it had been his fault.Zoey's shock quickly gave way to humiliation and panic. She shrieked, "Hugh! What the hell is that supposed to mean? So now you're done with me? Don't stand there acting innocent

I reached across the table and tapped Hugh's phone."Hugh, are you lying to me, or are you lying to yourself? Do you honestly think everything you've done for Zoey can be written off as friendship?"How many times did I tell you I wanted that necklace you bought her? I told you I loved it. I told you I wanted one. I even sent you the link. And what did you say? You couldn't get one. You said you could get it for me another time."I didn't raise my voice, but every word hit home. Hugh's face drained of color.I kept going. "Then you turned around and bought it for Zoey. Hugh, do you really think you can play me for a fool? You massaged her ankle right in front of me, your own fiancée. You played games with her."You were willing to let us miss our turn because you insisted on waiting for her while she was in the bathroom. And you expect me to believe that's just you looking out for a friend?"You know exactly what's going on, but you keep pretending you don't, and Zoey has no sham

Hugh had nothing to say after Mom tore into him. His face had gone pale.Mom pointed toward the stairs. "Now you want to know why? Too late. Get lost! Whatever Lynette does from now on is none of your business. You don't get a say in her life anymore!"Then she slammed the door in his face.Hugh still refused to give up. He drove straight to the bridal salon where I was supposed to have my dress fitting. He hurried up to the front desk, still out of breath, and asked about the appointment. The receptionist gave him an awkward look. "Sir, Ms. Gearhart called about an hour ago and canceled today's fitting. She also said... the wedding is off."Hugh swayed, catching himself on the counter before he could fall.He still refused to believe it. He called the wedding planner, the hotel, the emcee, and everyone else involved with the wedding. Every call ended the same way."Ms. Gearhart already called to cancel. The wedding is off."For the rest of the day, Hugh's world went eerily qu

Hugh snapped into the phone, "What the hell are you talking about?"But the second the words left his mouth, he remembered how I'd told him we were done on our last call. His heart started pounding. In a panic, he pulled up my social media profile, only to find nothing. His voice faltered. "Lynette... she must be mad at me. She must've blocked me from seeing her posts. Where did you see it? Send it to me!"His friend didn't waste a second. A screenshot came through almost immediately.Hugh opened it and zoomed in. The marriage certificate looked completely official. The embossed seal was clearly visible, and the issue date was today. It was real, and his ears started ringing. His friend kept talking on the other end. "Hugh? Are you okay? What the hell happened?"But Hugh couldn't hear a single word.He froze in his seat, and his grip went slack. His phone slipped from his hand, bounced off Zoey, and landed beside her leg in the passenger seat. For a moment, he just stared bla
