"We go to them. We end this."
The words hang in the air like a fucking challenge. Like I just dared the universe to try and stop me.
Everyone is staring at me. Helena. Damon. Cutter. Sera. Mira. They're all looking at me like I've lost my goddamn mind.
"Elara," Helena says slowly. "You just died. Twice. You're in no condition to—"
"I don't give a fuck what condition I'm in," I snap. "They killed my grandmother. They tortured Receptors. They tried to destroy the world. And they're not going to stop. You said it yourself, Sera. They'll keep coming until we're dead or they are."
Sera nods. Her face is unreadable.
"She's right," she says. "The Collective won't stop. They'll regroup. They'll rebuild. And they'll come back stronger than before. If we want to end this, we need to strike now. While they're still reeling from the loss of their facility."
"We don't even know where their main base is," Cutter says.
"Yes, we do."
Everyone turns to look at Sera. She walks to the table and spreads out a map. Her finger lands on a mountain range about two hundred miles from here.
"The Collective's main headquarters," she says. "Deep underground. Heavily fortified. They've been building it for centuries."
"Centuries?" Mira whispers.
"The Collective isn't new," Sera says. "They've been around since the veil first appeared. They've been planning this moment for generations. They want to control the veil. Remake the world in their image. And they'll kill anyone who gets in their way."
"Then we kill them first," I say.
Sera looks at me. Her old eyes are sharp, assessing.
"You're not ready," she says. "You barely survived the last fight. Your power is still unpredictable. You need to train. You need to rest."
"I don't have time to rest."
"You don't have a choice."
She walks toward me. Her voice is calm but firm.
"You're no good to anyone dead, Elara. If you go into that base without control over your power, you'll die. And everyone who's counting on you will die with you."
I want to argue. I want to scream. But I know she's right.
"Fine," I mutter. "I'll rest. But I'm not waiting long."
She nods. "That's all I'm asking."
---
The next three days are a blur of training.
Sera pushes me harder than ever before. She makes me create shields. Move objects. Sense the veil. Control the energy inside me. Every time I fail, she makes me do it again. And again. And again.
I hate her. I fucking hate her.
But I'm getting stronger.
By the end of the third day, I can lift a car with my mind. I can create a shield that could stop a bullet. I can feel the veil pressing down on the world, and I can push back against it.
Sera nods. "You're ready."
"Finally."
"Don't get cocky," she says. "The Collective is bigger than you think. And they're not alone."
"What do you mean?"
She pulls out a photograph. It's old, faded, worn at the edges.
"This is The Collector," she says. "The Collective's most dangerous asset. He's been hunting Receptors for years. Killing anyone who gets in his way."
I study the photograph. A tall man with dead eyes and a cruel smile. He looks like a killer. A cold, efficient killer.
"And he's still alive?"
"Last I heard," she says. "He was leading the counterattack on the medical bay. He's the one who almost killed Damon."
I feel my blood boil.
"Then I'll kill him," I say.
"Make sure you do," she says. "Because if you don't, he'll kill you."
---
We leave at dawn.
The team is smaller now. Helena. Damon. Cutter. Sera. And me. Mira is staying behind with the other Receptors, safe in the bunker.
"Be careful," she says, hugging me tight.
"I will," I promise.
"Come back."
"I always do."
We travel for two days. The veil is thicker here, pressing down on the world like a weight. The sky is dark. The air is cold. The ground is littered with the remains of a dying world.
And then we see it.
The Collective's base. Rising out of the mountain like a scar on the earth. Massive. Impenetrable. Surrounded by walls and guns and soldiers.
"Fuck," Cutter mutters. "That's a fortress."
"We're not going to be able to walk in through the front door," Damon says.
"Then we go through the back," Helena says. "There's an old service tunnel. Sera told me about it. It was built during the original construction. No one uses it anymore."
"Lead the way."
---
The tunnel is dark. Narrow. Cold. I can feel the veil pressing down on me, heavy and suffocating. But I keep moving. One foot in front of the other.
We walk for hours. The tunnel is endless. Silent. The only sounds are our footsteps and the drip of water echoing off the walls.
And then we reach the end.
A door. Steel. Heavy. Sealed shut.
"How do we get through this?" Damon asks.
"Like this," I say.
I raise my hand. The power surges through me, hot and bright. I push it toward the door. The metal groans. Warps. Cracks.
And then it explodes inward.
I step through into the base.
And I'm face to face with The Collector.
---
He's exactly like the photograph. Tall. Dead eyes. Cruel smile. He's wearing black armor and carrying a weapon I've never seen before—something that hums with dark energy.
"Elara Vance," he says. "I've been waiting for you."
"Get out of my way," I say.
He smiles. "I don't think so."
I raise my hand. The power surges. I push it toward him.
He doesn't flinch. He raises his own hand—and the energy bounces off him like he's made of stone.
"Did you really think it would be that easy?" he asks.
He attacks.
I barely have time to react. He moves faster than humanly possible, his weapon swinging toward my head. I drop, roll, scramble to my feet. He's already there. Again. And again.
He's toying with me.
"Fight back," he says. "Show me what you've got."
I push the power toward him again. He deflects it. Laughs.
"Pathetic," he says. "All that training, and you're still nothing."
He grabs me by the throat. Lifts me off the ground.
"You're going to die here, Elara. Just like your grandmother. Just like the others. And no one will remember your name."
I can't breathe. I can't think. My hands are clawing at his grip.
I look at him. At his dead eyes. And I feel something break inside me.
Not my body.
Something else.
I let go.
The power explodes out of me—not hot, not bright. Dark. Cold. The darkness that's been waiting inside me my whole life. It tears through The Collector like he's made of paper. He screams. His body writhes. And then he falls. His body crumples to the ground, dead.
I stand there, gasping for air.
It's over.
But I can still feel the darkness inside me.
And I know it's not done with me yet.
---The ancient threat doesn't sleep.Neither do I.Three days have passed since I forced it back into the cage of my mind. Three days of pretending I'm okay. Three days of smiling at Damon, hugging Mira, training with Zara, strategizing with Julian. Three days of acting like the thing inside me isn't biding its time, waiting for the exact moment I'm weakest. But it is. I can feel it.It's there every second. A cold weight in my chest. A whisper in the back of my skull. A shadow that moves when I don't. It doesn't scream anymore. It doesn't fight. It just... waits. Watching through my eyes. Listening through my ears. Tasting everything I taste. It's studying me. Learning me. Finding the cracks. And there are so many cracks."You're not sleeping," Damon says. We're in the armory. I'm sharpening a knife. He's cleaning his rifle. The words hang in the air between us like an accusation."I sleep.""No, you don't. You lie down. You close your eyes. But you don't sleep. I've been watching y
---I let the darkness in.And it feels like dying all over again. The cold hits me first—a cold so deep it burns, like someone's pouring liquid nitrogen straight into my veins. It spreads from my chest outward, crawling through my ribs, my stomach, my throat. My vision goes black. My ears fill with static. My mouth tastes like copper and ash and something older, something ancient, something that's been waiting for this moment since before humans learned to walk upright. Then the whispers start. Not one voice. Thousands. Millions. A chorus of the dead, the forgotten, the trapped. They claw at the inside of my skull like they're trying to dig their way out. They scream my name. They scream everything."Elara.""Elara.""ELARA."I try to scream back. Nothing comes out.My body isn't mine anymore.I feel my hands move. But I'm not the one moving them. I feel my legs stand. But I'm not the one standing. I feel my mouth open. But I'm not the one speaking. When the voice comes out, it's not
---"It's inside me now."The words hang in the air like a death sentence. Damon's face goes pale. His grip on my hand tightens like he's trying to hold me together, like he's afraid I'm going to shatter into a million pieces right in front of him.I might.I can feel it moving through me. Not like the power I used to have. Not like the light or the dark. Something older. Something colder. Something that's been sleeping for millennia and just woke up hungry."Elara," Damon says, his voice low and careful. "What do you mean it's inside you?"I try to sit up. My body feels wrong. Heavy. Like I'm carrying someone else's weight in my bones. Damon helps me, his arm around my shoulders, his warmth a sharp contrast to the cold spreading through my veins."Kael was just a vessel," I say. "The ancient threat was using him. But when I destroyed the weapon, when I broke the connection—it didn't die. It just... moved.""Moved where?"I look at him. His grey eyes are wide with fear. Not fear of wh
---The darkness is spreading.I stand on the observation deck, watching it crawl across the sky like a living thing. It's not the veil. It's something worse. Something ancient. Something that's been waiting for this moment for millennia. Kael is out there. Wounded but alive. And he's coming back. The clock is ticking.I feel a presence beside me. It's Julian. His blue eyes are fixed on the horizon, his face pale and drawn. He looks like he hasn't slept in days. He probably hasn't."Three days," he says. "Maybe less. That's how long until Kael returns with enough power to destroy everything.""You're sure?""Positive. The remnants we destroyed were just a fraction of what he's collected. He's been building this for years. Decades. And now that the veil is gone, he has no limits."I feel the weight of his words pressing down on me like a physical force. Three days. That's all we have. Three days to prepare. Three days to plan. Three days to figure out how to stop a man who's been poss
---Three days. That's all we have.Three days until Kael arrives with his army and his ancient darkness and his fucking vendetta against me. Three days until everything we've built, everyone we've saved, everything we've fought for—it all comes crashing down.I stand in the main chamber of the bunker, staring at the map on the wall. Julian's intel is spread across the table—photographs, diagrams, notes scribbled in his cramped handwriting. He's been working nonstop since we got back, his blue eyes bloodshot, his hands shaking from too much coffee and not enough sleep."The ancient threat is using Kael as a vessel," Julian says, pointing to a diagram. "It's been feeding on his rage, his ambition, his hatred. Making him stronger. More powerful. More dangerous.""How do we stop it?" I ask."By cutting off the connection," he says. "If we can sever the link between Kael and the ancient threat, he'll lose his power. He'll just be a man. A broken, desperate man.""And how do we sever the l
The bunker hums around us like a living thing.I stand in the main chamber, watching Zara's people settle in. They're exhausted, battered, broken. But they're alive. They made it. We all made it.Damon appears beside me. His hand finds mine."We did it," he says. "We actually did it.""Don't sound so surprised.""I'm always surprised when we survive," he says. "It's a habit."I almost smile. Almost."How many did we lose?" I ask.He hesitates. "Seven. All of them Zara's people. She's taking it hard.""She's not the only one."I look around the chamber. At the faces of the survivors. At the hope and fear in their eyes. At the weight of everything we've been through."We need to keep moving," I say. "We can't stay here forever.""I know. But we need to rest. Recover. Figure out our next move.""And what about Kael? He's still out there. He's still coming."Damon's jaw tightens. "I know.""Then we need to find him first.""We will. But first, we need to make sure everyone's safe."---Th
