Josh pushed his suitcase and Ashley's suitcase while she was already inside the house.
Ashley had been very cold to him since their last day in Paris.
Although every time he asked her what made her behave that way, she always replied with the same lines “I'm fine”, “I'm just tired”, “I'm not angry with you”, “I'm just the way I am”, “I'm not really angry, why would I be angry, I have no right to be angry”, “I'm just being normal”, “We agreed not to bother each other, so I'm more comfortable with us keeping our distance”.
All the girl's words boiled down to one conclusion: she was indeed angry with Josh, she just didn't want to admit it.
Whereas the previous few days they had enjoyed their days in Paris very much. There was even a moment when Josh felt that the two of them could be good friends.
As the plane landed back in their hometown, Ashley could barely stop herself from screaming. Every second on the plane, he thought of only one thing: when he got home, he wouldn't pretend to be strong anymore.
Josh walked casually in front of her, dragging a large suitcase, as if everything was fine. Just looking at the man's back made Ashley's blood boil.
As soon as they entered the house, before the suitcases could be opened, Ashley exploded.
Josh frowned, as if he didn't understand. "Why do you act like that all the time? I don't understand what your problem is."
Ashley snorted in disbelief. "You really don't realize? Three days I was alone in Paris! You'd rather spend time with... her!" Ashley emphasized the word “him” as if it was poison on her tongue.
Ashley knew full well what their relationship was like. This was just a business marriage. A deal without love, without sweet promises, without dreams of a future together.
From the beginning, she was told, and she accepted. She understood. There was no room to expect more. But unfortunately, the heart doesn't always obey logic. Ashley still loves him like always.
Secretly, subconsciously, she fell for him - the way he smiled when he heard a stupid joke, the way he frowned when he was thinking seriously, the way he pronounced her name with a heavy voice that somehow sounded very warm in her ears.
Ashley never intended to demand anything. She didn't ask Josh to reciprocate his feelings. She didn't demand that Josh pretend to love him.
But still...
Watching Josh making out with another girl in front of his eyes, like what happened in Paris, was like cutting a knife into his heart.
It wasn't just jealousy. It was pain.
Bitter, piercing, devastating. Sharon's every giggle, every deliberately intimate touch, seemed to be telling Ashley, "You're not important. You're just a shadow."
And even worse, Josh did nothing to stop it. There was no attempt to protect her feelings. No consideration for her dignity. Ashley felt stupid.
How could she be so naive, letting her heart soften for a man who wasn't even trying to protect her? How could she allow herself to be hurt so many times, while Josh continued to make choices that were clearly not in her favor?
Maybe he was wrong from the start. Wrong for thinking that small kindnesses meant something. Wrong for thinking the warm conversations were sincere. Wrong for hoping, even a little, that there was a place for her in Josh's heart.
Ashley took a deep breath, trying to hold back the tears that welled up.
She had to remind herself: this was just a contract marriage.
Not love. Not a real relationship.
But somehow, knowing that fact didn't make her pain less. Quite the opposite-the deeper, the more piercing, the harder it was to breathe.
Ashley looked at her reflection in the mirror. A tired face, puffy eyes from lack of sleep, and a forced bitter smile. She had to be strong. She had to stop hoping.
Because the only thing more painful than loving someone who doesn't love her... is sticking around while watching him love someone else right before your eyes.
And Ashley knew, sooner or later, she would have to choose—stay and continue to be hurt, or leave before he was completely destroyed.
Josh held up a hand, trying to calm her down. "Sharon just wants to spend time together. She came all the way to Paris-"
"This honeymoon is pretend, but at least I want to have a comfortable vacation without interruptions," Ashley exclaimed. Her voice broke, her eyes watering.
Josh stiffened. "Don't start insulting Sharon."
"Insults? I haven't even started yet!" Ashley leaned closer, defiant. "If you cared more about Sharon, why did you marry me? What was all this for? What's all the pretense for?"
Josh retorted in a loud voice. "I married you because of circumstances! It's not like I had to leave the person I've been with longer!"
Ashley stared at him, her heart feeling like it was being squeezed. "Well then, don't expect me to stay in this fake marriage."
Josh approached, his face flushed with anger. "You think I'm enjoying all this? I had to hold Sharon back, I had to hold myself back from just leaving with her! I'm trying to make this all work, Ashley!"
"Trying?" Ashley laughed bitterly. "By letting your girlfriend stay next door to us? By letting me hear the sounds of you making love every night?! That's how you try?"
Josh paled. "I... I didn't mean-"
“Didn't mean to?” Ashley interrupted, her tone sharp. “Or do you really not care?”
Josh was silent, his jaw hardened.
Ashley sighed heavily, her voice shaking with emotion. "I feel like a fool, Josh. The day before Sharon came... I thought we had a chance. I thought maybe... maybe you and I could be something. But now I know... I was just a shadow. A spare place for you."
Josh looked away, as if he couldn't bear to look at her.
Ashley held back her tears with difficulty. “I don't deserve to be treated like this.”
Josh finally spoke, his voice cold. “If you can't stand it, you can leave.”
Ashley froze. Her breath caught. The words were like a hard slap to her face.
Josh saw her reaction and looked a little sorry, but his ego kept him from apologizing.
Ashley nodded slowly. "Okay. If that's what you want."
Without another word, Ashley walked towards her room, slamming the door loudly.
Josh stood in the living room, his chest rising and falling with anger. But as the silence began to take over the house, and as the harsh reality settled in his mind, something inside him felt empty.
Very empty. Yet his pride was too high to chase.
And Ashley, behind the door of her room, let herself crumble in silence.
That night, two hearts that hurt each other chose silence over healing. And the distance between them felt wider than the distance between Paris and their homes.
The next day, the atmosphere in the house was tense. Josh left early without breakfast. Ashley didn't come out of the room. There was no conversation, no staring. Only silence hung heavy, like a thick fog that wouldn't budge. Ashley sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the closed suitcase. The clothes from Paris were still neatly organized inside.
So many bitter memories were attached to those fabrics. She closed her eyes, trying to erase the pain. But in vain. The wound left by Josh was deeper than she thought.
And out there, Josh drove his car, trying to forget Ashley's hurt expression. Thinking, maybe time will fix everything.
Or at least... make them get used to the pain.
The words of her mother and Josh's mother came to mind when Ashley spent her breakfast alone this morning—for the umpteenth time after she and Josh returned from Paris. In fact, after the incident where she was injured, she felt that her relationship with Josh was somehow going quite well as if nothing had ever happened. Although at that time there was still no clarity on the exact solution that the two of them should do about Josh's scandal with his girlfriend.Ashley also still hoped that Josh would agree to her proposal for a divorce at the right time one day. She had even offered to think of a good scenario that would allow them to separate without disrupting the business relationship between the two families. But Josh just ignored her. When Ashley asked Josh if he wasn't afraid of Ashley snitching on his family or leaking it to the media, he remained calm and continued to ignore all her remarks. It was as if Josh knew that Ashley would never do that because the impact would clear
Ashley's breath caught as she suddenly found herself in a very complicated situation like this.“Who is that girl with your husband, Miss?” Mrs. Go narrowed her eyes. Intending to be able to see more clearly as well as make sure that her vision was not wrong. “Do you know her?”Mrs. Go successively asked those curious questions just as Josh was feeding his girlfriend with a very wide drawn smile on his face. Then as the two of them laughed happily and jokingly at each other, Mrs. Go began to shake her head and snort in frustration.“I don't understand—the reason she can't come is because of this?”Ashley looked at Mrs. Go with mounting panic. She was completely confused and didn't know what to answer this time. The couple's intimacy was currently being witnessed firsthand by Mrs. Go—her mother's confidante and the only person closest to her besides Bella. Seeing the current situation, Ashley is not sure if Josh can survive even if she defends him by giving the best reason. The interac
Ashley felt like she was being bludgeoned by a blatantly sharp sword at that moment. How dare that man twist Ashley's words in front of her, just to save his own skin. “Go with your husband, and follow us,” Ashley's mother prevented Ashley from getting in when the girl opened the car door next to her mother.Ashley automatically and unconsciously took a deep breath and let out her sigh softly, then replied, “Okay, Mom.”Even so, the woman could hear her heavy sigh and caught the expression of her daughter who seemed to strongly object to what she had just ordered."Wait. Why did you sigh like that just now? Are you tired of me? Don't you like listening to these words of your mother?" The woman looked at her with a serious, flat, expressionless look—which made the atmosphere between them suddenly become instantly suffocating.Ashley, who was still leaning against the car door, felt as if she was being strangled by her mother's words."That's not it, Mom. I'm going to Josh's car. I'm sorry," she ended with a bow and quickly closed the door without any further ado. There was nothing better for Ashley, really, whether it was being in the car with Josh o
After a heated argument and Josh's yelling which turned out to be quite traumatizing for Ashley, they didn't speak to each other at all. The short drive to the hospital felt like an uncomfortably long one. The air in their car was cold, but what Josh and Ashley felt was stuffy and claustrophobic. But after all, they were two adults who needed to take responsibility and control their behavior. They both knew they had to calm their hearts and cool their heads in front of Ashley's mother and her business partner later. Because if they were to clearly show the atmosphere of their quarrel in front of others, it would only invite more problems—Ashley's mother would become even more suspicious of Josh, and what if she found out what Josh had done? He, and his family, would be finished right then and there. And it all happened just because of his carelessness. This, for Josh, was like a vicious circle that was increasingly entangling him. At that moment, Sharon was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at him with a panicked look in her eyes. She was only wearing an inner blouse with the outer—she had been wearing when she met Josh this afternoon—lying by the door, near Josh's feet. And there was no denying that Sharon's hair was a mess. Other than that, Josh couldn't afford to wander any further to check what else was wrong in the room.Even when he saw the silhouette of another man leaning against the window while busy putting on his shirt, Josh averted his eyes and turned away. He walked with very heavy and unsteady footsteps and sat down on the sofa in the living room.Sharon, with panic filling her whole being, glared at that man while whispering to him to tidy up quickly and get out.Her hands haphazardly adjusted all her clothes, brushed her hair casually, and wiped her lips carelessly. “Sir,” a voice sounded in the distance. “Sir, excuse me, sir,” the voice came closer and clearer. “Sir!” then it sounded louder and more firm in his ears.Josh was shocked because when he opened his eyes he saw Mr. Jung—his secretary—looking at him in the face.Josh gasped and tried to sit up. He lifted his head and lowered his legs that had been bent overnight. His neck was stiff because he had fallen asleep on the short sofa in his office, so his head bent uncomfortably.“Are you staying here, Sir?” Mr. Jung looked surprised from the expression on his face. "Today we have a morning meeting with all the divisions.” The man immediately recited Josh's schedule report—as if it was automatic because it had become a habit in doing his work. “Are you going home first to get ready? Would you like me to make you some coffee?“Josh rubbed his eyes and massaged his forehead. ”I don't think so. I'll just take a shower here. When is the meeting?""It's still about two hours away. Sharon walked back and forth in her spacious living room with her cell phone held firmly in her hand. Occasionally, she frowned as she checked her silent cell phone. Then she walked back and forth again around the room. Checking the time of day, pacing again while seemingly deep in thought, and checking her cell phone again for the umpteenth time. But her messages and incoming calls remained the same as before. There was absolutely nothing new.Worst of all, her face would grow a thousand times more sour every time her outgoing calls went unanswered, and none of her messages were read by the recipient—Josh.“Wow, this is funny,” Somun, who was sitting casually with his legs crossed, was confused by Sharon's behavior. That afternoon, Ashley couldn't even look her parents in the face. The atmosphere between them became even more tense after Ashley went back inside, when she told them that Josh suddenly couldn't make it.“So, he's not coming anymore?” Ashley’s mother asked while stirring the soup that was already halfway in her small bowl."Yes. But it's not just because of his will. Suddenly there are a lot of urgent things he needs to get done for the launch of his project."Even when Ashley tried to convince her parents that Josh sounded really sorry for not being able to come and that what was preventing him was really office business that couldn't be left unattended, her mother's face just looked even more disgusted.Ashley was terrified that her lie would be caught, so she continued to earnestly try to tell all sorts of other lies, whatever came to mind, just to convince and lessen her parents' annoyance."That's twice already. How many more times do I have to tolerate his disrespectful behavio
Somun held his stomach as he tried to stop laughing. "Okay, okay. So what's your great plan?""I'll pretend to kill myself... But not pretend. Pretend, but not fake," Sharon tried to emphasize her most important point. “So, I'm going to really cut myself, but not so deep that I can't actually die.” she automatically demonstrated the motion of slicing her wrist with the knife she was holding. "That's why I need you here. You're in charge of taking me straight to the hospital as soon as I cut myself so that I can get medical attention quickly. After that, you also have to tell Josh that I'm in serious condition. Since he won't pick up my calls at all, you'll have to send word through his office phone. How?" Sharon's eyes looked serious as she explained her plan.Somun, however, went from underestimating it to thinking it was total nonsense. Because there was also a hint of worry that suddenly came to him."Crazy! The risk is too great. What if you really die before reaching the hospital
